But Bryan Ferry doesn't fail every comparison. Last night, I saw Alicia Keys at Wembley Arena. She only played, wait for it, 95 minutes after a support slot described by the box office as "a DJ, NMC". I have a feeling they were a DJ and an MC, but I'll be corrected if necessary as they weren't introduced. 95 minutes, when she was often not on stage, making way for a drum solo, some 'dance' by a midget sidekick, some shifting of keyboards and a grand piano...but then she only has one album (not 10) from which to draw. Alicia Keys is incredibly talented, her piano playing is out of this world and she has a great voice. But she is 21 and the record company think she must fit into that square hole that young artists must fit. So while she played some magical songs with piano accompaniment, she was also harnessed to a bass heavy fuzzy (distorted)band sound for the big songs that bleached her soul. Interestingly, as we filtered out of the venue, a woman near to me started singing Family Affair by Sly & The Family Stone. Not a song covered by Alicia Keys (which might be reasonable as people left the evening's entertainment), but a song played over the tannoy system. That summed up the night for me really. The show was OK, but the tannoy had the memorable content. I'll start with one question: did your favorite Roxy/Ferry song end up being the one you thought it would be when you started your list? How did you pick your favorite Roxy/Ferry song? If you made a similar list next week, would the same songs top both lists? Does she realize that that is more than one question? I ended up with "Sentimental Fool" and "Is Your Love Strong Enough" as my #1 songs, but I have to say that really any of the songs in my top 10 lists could be at #1 depending what kind of a day I am having, what music I'd been listening to, etc. Picking 10 favorite songs is easy--but putting them in order? Yes. Although I must remark that there are a number of songs which I truly adore for their craftsmanship and exhilaration, but which have somewhat "worn out their welcome" by being overplayed (radio and live). A Song for Europe, TTOIA and Oh Yeah are three examples which I felt like a criminal for leaving out, although IEDAH stayed on the list, just because it is to me such a historic and still-amazing warhorse.
