I am sorry if this is not what you all want to hear, but attending recent concert events has made me draw comparisons that I cannot ignore. As my good buddy Richard Miserable pointed out to me, currently there are another 1463 artistes on tour who are playing up to 10 seconds more material on stage than Mr Ferry. Add to this he is wearing his suit more than once, and sings songs that we have all heard before. I feel cheated. I flew 14 million miles to attend a concert and the only bright spark of the evening was finding an internet cafe to enable me to complain about everything afterwards. Please do not judge me harshly, but do consider this : During my visit to these shores, I was shopping in your Oxford Street, when I saw a poor stray hungry dog on the street. Much to my disbelief a limousine pulled up, and out stepped a man who gave the dog some food, patted it, and drove away. Minutes later, a second man in leather trousers and a scarf walked by the poor dog, giving it not so much as a second glance. I do not need to tell you who the second man was. But do you realise who the first kind man was ? Yes, it was David Bowie. Three hours later, Mr Bowie played for 26 hours more than Mr Ferry did. Do you need any more evidence ? Even a friend of mine who spent all evening worrying if Mr Bowie would notice her new shoes and handbag, was rewarded when Mr Bowie himself personally dedicated the encore to her. Two days earlier, Mr Ferry did not appear to notice her attire, instead busying himself on playing a concert for the audience instead. I rest my case, although this does not mean I will not moan endlessly again. Not that I am one to complain or draw meaningless comparisons, you understand. Also while I'm on the subject of CS, the striped jacket he's wearing for this tour looks suspiciously like the one he wore for the Roxy tour. If this is the case will he have to have it surgically removed and is Bryan paying him for these tours, as he can't seem to afford a new jacket. AH! Tim timely writes a sentiment that I have long held when he wrote: "I don't agree with the frequently stated opinion on this list that he's a fabulous live performer even at his best, though of course I very much enjoy seeing him live. He is essentially to my mind a studio musician, live performing very much a (promotional and profitable) footnote. I think it's possible to appreciate the whole of Ferry from the records,...". Granted, I have only seen Mr. Ferry live once. I gained nothing from that performance to enhance my opinion of his artistry. Instead, I walked away a bit disappointed, thinking his music is far better than his show. Of the few live recordings that I have obtained via the generosity of fellow fans I remain convinced that I enjoy his studio work much, much more than his 'live work'. In fact, I wish he'd disappear into the studio - lock the door - until he has created and recorded the great music that he is capable of producing. I've never complained about the length of time between his solo effort releases, since traditionally, he had given us very good to excellent recordings - that is up until the advent of "Frantic". If his future work is more of the same in this current vein, I shall consider him to be too far gone to waste any further time, money, or effort fanning and fueling his 'efforts'! Just my opinion. Of course you can't appreciate the whole of the "Ferry" from just his studio recordings, the "Frantic" shows have been a great success in my opinion, a good range of songs from all periods of his career, it is a pity that he has to play the DTS/JG/LITD hits package, besides that he looks the most relaxed/healthy/happy I've ever seen him and I've seen every tour since the Stranded tour '73 and he sounds great (I thought his voice was very thin sounding at the Festival Hall show '99, I was convinced it had gone at the time). God forbid that he should bury himself in the studio again (not that anyone would finance it on his current sales), I've had all the multi-layered sanitised albums I'll ever need from him, at least Frantic (hotch potch it may be) is varied and loose sounding. No, give me more cover versions/tours/box sets, whatever, but not 4 years waiting for 40 minutes of noodling. Terry "O" > > Granted, I have only seen Mr. Ferry live once. Ah, it's great to smell the grey, grey smog of home. As my 125 glides into the Central Station the critically acclaimed Millennium Blinking Eye Bridge winks me welcome. A full day of R&R before the first of the two Newcastle Concerts. The fateful night comes, with Mr O'B yet again jinxed in his attendance. I think we've worked out that he has missed more concerts on this tour than the average Roxy fan has seen throughout their entire lives. During this period it would have been most unwise for any of his work colleagues to approach him whilst a rivet gun was nearby. And even dafter if a nut wrench was to hand. Well at least it meant we could all move one up in our seats. I try to barter our lovely Manchester lasses for better seats with the big Geordie lads next to me, but they wanted the lasses and the seats. Strictly no sale. The heart's beating faster... here we go... hang onto your hats the Geordies are in town. A glimpse over my shoulder and everyone's super glued to their seats. Bryan leaps up after The Only Face genuinely really pleased to back in Newcastle, back home. A warm ripple of applause, but not the rousing reception you'd expect. Respectful not rapturous. And so it went. A few of us on our feet from TTOIA, still no movement during Slave To Love which usually has the less "critical" fans up and about and finally..finally...Love Is The Drug boots them into action. Such a shame as Bryan gave this his absolute all, grinning like a fool, leaping, whooping and a-hollering and a storming performance from all on stage. They'd been geared up for this one and I think were fairly oblivious to the lack lustre performance from the stalls. And there were some blinding moments throughout, with Mick Green entertaining us with little frills here and there and machine gun chopping on Cruel that would put the living bejeezus up you. Sarah flying, and turning MOL into a total diva deliverance, Spedding fairly drooling as she soared her way in and out and around the melody. Julia and Paul playing out of their skins on Boys and Girls with an extended end that held me transfixed (but seemed to leave a lot of people cold). Even Ferry's now infamous "Eskimos and Geordies" was lost to a crowd who were as ecstatic as a bunch of dobbed in dolies. LST boogied on with Spedding and Green (that well know firm of Undertakers) taking it to bridge and then instead of immediately vacating the stage all eyes turned to Ferry as if to say "Shall we give them the surprise encore then?" A swift shake of the head and off they all trundled. We really did not deserve anything that night. Let's hope tomorrow is better. But United are playing Juventus at home in the Champions League and we have to win to stay in the competition. Oh God. Front row for Ferry or Ticket for the match. I'm in a dilemma. An unsuccessful search for a St James' pass left me with no choice, Ferry it was. Stevie B got the right idea, spending the "first half" in the Hotspur opposite the match watching live on the telly and then legging down to the City Hall for the start of the Ferry shenanigans. I was strangely distracted throughout wondering if the Toon had popped one in the onion bag yet. But Ferry's a big Toon fan, he'll announce any score from the stage, after all he's done it before. But no half time Des Lynham impersonation from Bry, did that mean we'd lost. Oh come on and concentrate Fiske! Again a fantastic concert put in by the band. I ran off a couple of films from my prime spot and decided to capture forever the battered, mildewed patent winkle pickers that Ferry had rescued whilst checking on his portrait in the attic. I have little doubt that these shoes had seen active service in The Gasboard. A born again athlete, Ferry paraded them above his head for "see La Gouloue". Again, the band stayed on stage after LST. Bryan gave us a second chance tonight to earn our encore. Nope. Failed again. But this time Woolly Bully was printed on the running sheet. We only had ourselves to blame. I shout over to a roadie "Do you know the score?" "yeah, you lot won 1-0" The result is relayed to the back of the hall and the departing Ferryites. The roar was louder than anything we'd heard all night. I guess I wasn't the only one distracted that night. Then a spot of find the last drink in Newcastle began. For Party City Central it is remarkably difficult to get a drink in this town after 11pm. We grab last orders nearby and then John O'Brien and I head off to The Lizard Lounge (how apt) to dissect the evening and celebrate The Toon's success in Europe. Well still Edinburgh way ahead on points. I expected nothing from York and so delayed my departure from the Toon to spend more time with my dear old neglected mother. Arrived to grid-lock traffic in a city centre now pedestrianised and one-wayed to a stand still. I just about had time to slip out of mufti and into regulation concert uniform. Thankfully I'd passed the Barbican on my way to my hotel and it was easily within teetering distance. None of the usual suspects were due, but I suddenly run into Chris Turner who just can't help himself and has spent the previous two weeks without any sleep at all travelling nomad like around the country with "no intention of doing this gig, but you know how it is". And the mad, mad fab Dutch. We all feel that this is the concert where we expect nothing, so perversely we might get a tickle, as they say in the trade. The Barbican is a very intimate venue holding only about 1700, but could seem a little sterile. The atmosphere pre concert however already felt pretty warm. The first surprise of the evening was Girl Of My Best Friend - totally unexpected and worked very well. They must be dropping Smoke Gets In Your Eyes I thought. Maybe Bryan feels that adding the drums has now taken away from the "acoustic" feel at the beginning of the set. No, here it comes. Interesting. The instrumental's up next and already there's a trickle of girls making their way to the front down the right aisle. The beady eyed Dutch spot this immediately and cut them off in a pincer movement. The front row's on their feet. Time to make my move. A bit of nifty footwork down the left aisle and I'm blocked by an over zealous female bouncer, arms outstretched, bellowing "go back to your seats it's health and safety regulations". The guy behind me says he ain't goin' nowhere ladee. She's adamant. We counter that if everyone goes back to their seats, we'll go back to ours. They're not on my side, but you lot are, now go back to your seats. TTOIA strikes up. Suddenly I'm on my own as the people behind me have decided to go up and round the back of the venue and down the other side. Making sure I wasn't blocking anyone's view, I decide to step up and be counted. So, face to face, toe to toe I sing TTOIA right into our bouncer's face. Suddenly Ferry spots me and he's over like a whippet who hasn't been walked for a week. He's egging me on now beckoning me forward, the fool. I'm miming that a can't move past without physically assaulting the security (mind I was tempted) Ferry's laughing and rolling his eyes skyward and then goes off to the side. The Dutch tell me later that he instructed Jason the tour manager to personally sort it out. More security is sent over to me, oh here we go - my first ejection of the tour. Suddenly my unamused rottweiler is called off and I'm allowed forward. A high five from Bryan and we can start having some real fun. It was a patchy gig (although with lots of interaction between the girls and crowd, and lots of twinkly silliness back and forth between Lucy and Iain) Spedding's guitar packed up and the meter ran out during Limbo , leaving Bryan with just two spotlights until the beginning of Slave To Love when someone obviously found 10p and the lights went back on. The running order had been rejigged and uno, dos, tres, quatro.... Shame, Shame, Shame went into Woolly Bully. This was always a funfair classic for me and conjures up being whizzed around on the waltzers at The Spanish City, it also immediately takes me to Andy who provided the sax on Eddie and the Hot Rods version. This was barn storming . Watch me now! watch me now indeed! An extended party atmosphere LST and it's over. I kiss and make up with the bouncer, actually I offered her out for a mud wrestling competition which she politely declined, and then a pop round the back to say a big thank you to the band for the tour as my bank manager has vetoed me doing anymore this year. Backstage we run straight into Anna and Katie who have offered their services for a secret assignment sometime in the future (a joke maybe but you never know!), a homesick Lucy and the ever affable big man TGPT. We compare our theories on the Washington Sniper/s when Mr F walks past does a double take and comes back to say hiya (in a true Geordie brogue). Sometime later, the gang's rounded up by Dick and Bryan "come on who wants their picture taken then?". Then Bryan wants one just with the girls "I like having my picture taken with girls" he says, like we didn't know. Then its a thanks for the tour see you next time hand shake and off to the Dutch hotel for welll...if you want to know...you better ask Ed. All I'll say is that it involved a lump of pork, a pair of false eyelashes and a guitar. And I have the negatives to prove it.
