Sorry to *keep* harping on about the lethargy in the current tour camp, but 105 minutes is fine for artists who have but a couple of albums to draw upon. But *most* artists with 20-30 years back catalogue manage two hours. For once I am not just relying on the current Heathen tour (frequently nudging the three-hour mark) for comparison. I believe that most people going to see the Stones or Broooooce just now would be pretty disappointed by 105 minutes. When U2 go on stage, most people would expect more than a couple of hours. There's a reason why these guys are all considered to be great live acts. Don't get me wrong, I don't actually *like* all of the above, but credit where it's due. To go out and charge the prices BF is charging and feel that folks won't feel short-changed by 105 minutes, that it somehow represents a show of effort, is miserly in the extreme. On the Roxy tour, it obviously has been transposed (if I remember about three half-steps down) so that it was easier to sing (given that it was only played a couple of times, it didn't work out that great either). If you listen to TOF on this tour, you'll find that Bryan Ferry uses the lower register of his voice, I think that one has been transposed as well, but I haven't got it around to check it out at the moment. Still, on the ATGB tour he had to stretch the vocal more during TOF. On the current tour, it has been observed by some that he makes use of his (excellent) lower register more. That could be a contributing factor as to why the voice sounds stronger. Still, listen out: he does the high notes during the chorus of 'Boys & Girls', for example. And I would have loved to have heard 'Just Like You'. Boy, that one is high-pitched! An anatomical pinch might be a good device... Though he has a distinct voice (which I don't like very much), this seemed so wretched to me somehow. Company thought (?): 'Others have pushed their careers by recording albums of standards, so let's do Rod one as well.' After having heard Ferry's unique and most wonderful version of TFT, this seemed very pale. With Ferry, there is an interesting ambivalent aspect of classic crooner-orientation on one hand and quirky eccentric on the other, that makes TFT (and, well, for me) ATGB very personal, vocally. That illustrates the difference between somebody who worries and cares about the way his record is being made and somebody who drops by the studio to record a couple of vocal lines to let the producers do the rest, while spending the time gained displaying a bad haircut and trying to act as if still an attractive guy. Having said that, I don't want to simply say 'Bry's better than Rod'. I tried to highlight different approaches to record-making and song interpretation. Many of us may have complaints about Ferry's music, but it is still HIS music. It was scary being on live, but fun, and after my interview I had a rather interesting experience. They had me stay on to join in a discussion about playing air guitar, which as far as I know is when you PRETEND to play guitar. It was a bit surreal, me sitting there along with a professor and a young woman who performs as an air guitarist. Apparently, air guitar is a big thing in the U.K. (they just had some big competition of (air guitar players)." so, is it true? about the air guitar, i mean (i realize the BF story was told earlier ...). it would explain a lot. peaces/ms _______________________________________________________________ Get the FREE email that has everyone talking at http://www.mail2world.com ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Oct 2002 17:27:35 -0500 From: "Heather James" Subject: RE: [AVALON] Tick Tock One thing to consider about concerts - A friend of mine has tickets for a major artist - here's the details: Peter Gabriel at the MCI center in DC - Sunday 11/24, 8:00 pm Section 5, Row R Price w/ service charge: $128.25 each (face value, but high...) opening act: the Blind Boys of Alabama Now if Bryan was to put on a 2+ hour show with a big opening act and all of that ...? If I remember reading correctly from the Viva Roxy site, even on the Avalon tour, MTT was only played once the first night. And on the Roxy reunion tour only a few shows at the beginning. So it's not a matter of being overplayed, it's the difficulty of the song. It's a shame that such a beautiful song can't be consistantly reproduced live, even in a lower key. I wonder if Bryan wishes he could sing it? For those of you who have heard it on the reunion tour, do you think it was worth it and would like to hear it again?
