Even though I've never seen More Than This performed live, I would have loved to heard the slower (?) version that was attempted during the Frantic tour. I can imagine that a slower version of More Than This would be very smooth indeed and would give a completely different perspective of the track. One way or the other I think there is zero chance of it re-appearing during the remainder of the tour. Aleks Y! Great to hear the surprise Woolly Bully. Brilliant show. Hello to everyone I met in the pub - good to see you all. As I got to the Apollo early (about 5.45) I was stood outside the pub next door when Bryan, sat in the back of a car, pulled up to the security gates just a few yards away. He waved, then got out and signed autographs for just the handful of us that were there. I only had a scrappy piece of paper for him to sign but a piece I'll now treasure forever. Chain Reaction sounds especially haunting driving home after a long day, the windscreen wipers keeping a beat repeating, in the zig zag shadows that promise much. I should have replied to Colleen's thoughtful response to my "optimistic" take on I Thought. I stand by my comments but now see how someone else might read the lyrics as sad wistful rather than happy wistful. The concert performances of this number, with their jaunty, end-of-the-pier feel, may have steered my upbeat impression. (I despair when I read that this number's been dropped from the set list but I'm sure all serious Avalonions have been enjoying the Amsterdam recording.) I only noticed how much I liked it when i did a casette for the car with Gemini Moon on it and I realised that I wanted to hear Chain Reaction after it instead of whatever I recorded next. BTW A Wasteland/Windswept is Ferrys most beautiful music/lyric fusion, with the part where it breaks into Windswept from Wasteland pure genius. And "I Thought" does seem optimistic to me - the last verse having the day "smothered in gold" - the sort of imagery only Ferry can conjure up. Simple yet beautiful......."and when you tell me pass it on - I'll pass it on" ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Oct 2002 12:19:44 -0800 (PST) From: David Firmin Subject: [AVALON] Philadelphia has been postponed till early 2003 I saw this on http://www.bryanferry.com/news.html *** Y! We (Dick & Petra Verseput, Han & Esther Dorenbos, Renate & me) arrived Thursdaymorning - with sunny weather - in our hotel nearby the very ugly venue The Barbican Centre. Of course we decided to go to a pub that night, The Three Tuns. After the story of The Dog and Duck this sounds pretty unworthy of belief, but it really happened. For the second time Colin choose the same pub as we did to get a drink. When he saw us he said: "I don't believe this, this is totally unbelievable!" He was with a friend, so he didn't stay with us. The next day we went to The Barbican Centre and met Duncan Watkins, nice to have met you Duncan. When the bus came I had my chance to give the pictures which I promissed to give to Colin, Chris, Katie & Anna. I can tell you, they were impressed. So was I. Then the gig, a very strange gig. The lights went down during Limbo, only the spot on Bryan worked well. More than 10 minutes later, at the end of Boys and Girls, these problems were solved. In the meantime there were also problems with Chris' guitar. And the security was like a special department of the FBI. But the gig was excellent, Bryan's voice superb. Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow was a pleasant surprise. So was Smoke Gets In Your Eyes....... WITH The Great Paul Thompson. At the end the whole crowd was dancing & shouting and Bryan reacted on that with many smiles and moves like never before. Shame Shame Shame was a highlight again. And then came the last (but not least) surprise, Wooly Bully. Everybody joined in the singing, because everybody knows this song. It was one big party. After the gig there was an afterparty. I couldn't find Rebecca Travis, the assistent tour-manager, but we succeeded to join the party. Jocelyn Fiske, Chris Turner and the 6 Dutchies enjoyed it very much. Jocelyn entertained Paul and I showed my pictures, which I took of Bryan in the Royal Albert Hall, to Katie & Anna. Katie loved them and wanted to show them to Bryan, I didn't refuse.... He liked them as well but he didn't want to keep them, "I don't like pics of myself" he added. Bryan also told me he knew we're from Holland. He was very kind and took all the time to have a chat. After a while he wanted to return the photo's to me and asked if I wanted him to sign them, so he did. After a photoshoot with the whole bunch and Bryan in the middle we went to our hotel. I won't bore you with what happened over there. If you want to know, ask Jocelyn. Overall, once again, and against the odds, it all seemed pretty triumphant to me. I'm not sure if I'm top-notch cognescenti when it comes to assessing bands, but they sounded really hot to me. A massive range of stuff..........Will you love me tomorrow? Dreamy, extended Boys and Girls......and a kicking Woolly Bully (spelling?). And totally convincing at each stage. Lovely little violin parts/gorgeous guitar interplay/imaginative and energetic percussion/metronomic timing/fab lights (have they been augmented since the Albert Hall?). This band has really worked at this stuff. And I think the voice has just got better and steadily better. Debatable at Princes Street. Fun in Liverpool, but in the historic gloom and grot of the Apollo last night, he was really belting them out. I don't know, but I think anyone with any heart would be moved by the quality and soul of these shows and the effort which has gone in. And two new songs on the penultimate night!
