Long PostWednesday 16 Oct Back to the City (Oval) Hall in Sheffield, the scene of the first gig I went to 20 years ago and back to my hometown. It was a cold night in Sheffield, the City Hall is a beautiful venue. It remains pretty much unchanged in many ways, kind of like going back in time Bryan has commented before how he likes this venue, maybe its the unique shape of the City Hall, maybe its the real "concert hall" feel, rather than some of the newer commercial venues. Lights go down as we take our seats in what can only be described as "cinema" style seating "Just Me Myself, No One Else" Lights go down, Bryan appears quietly on stage. He definitely looked unhappy, even grumpy (something that not just myself but other people noticed), thoughts going through my mind like this might not be very good, this was to prove not to be the case later. During the early part of the show, Bryan is joined in stage by Lucy Wilkins, Colin Good and Julia Thornton and I really dont remember in which order! Bryan wears a black evening suit, white unbuttoned shirt and some classy cufflinks. When he is joined on stage by Julia, who looked absolutely stunning :) the harp is just to his left, this is removed after the "slow" songs at which point the rest of the band appears on stage. No rush to the stage at the start but after "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" a few people start heading toward the front, the "few" soon become "many". Kind of wish that Id have also joined the rush, but I wasnt that far from the stage and I get a second bite of the cherry in Manchester. The security is pretty relaxed in Sheffield so its not a problem for the people that want to get closer. Katie and Anna are to Bryans right, I think they are billed as "dancers" but are both "dancers" and backing singers. Behind them is Colin Good with Ian Dixon on sax to his right. The Great Paul Thompson is centre stage behind Bryan with Chris Spedding just in front of him. Chris was wearing a grey-ish suit with a very long jacket, hair fully quiffed up. To the left of Bryan, Mark Smith on Bass. Next to him Mick Green with Julia and Lucy behind them. Sarah Brown is the opposite side of the stage to Katie and Anna, which was kind of nice and unusual, not having all the backing singers together. "The Sky is dark, the wind is cold"it was outside, but inside the City Hall the heat was about to be turned up, more and more people clambering to the front, Bryan getting more animated and starting to really move around. Any thoughts of Bryan looking unhappy disappear, now hes really starting to enjoy himself. The Thrill Of It All was just a great start to the more "up beat" part of the gig, the momentum started and kept going all the way through. Some of the songs did sound speeded up, but they were all met with great applause by the audience. This included the songs from "Frantic". Usually artists tend to get polite applause for numbers that some of the crowd havent heard before, but this wasnt the case in Sheffield, it was all genuine and everyone was having a really good time. I really liked "Cruel" and "Fool For Love", all of the songs in the latter half of the show keep the momentum going. "Tappin4 out telexes to Tupelo"last time I saw Bryan in Sheffield was for the ATGB tour, during which someone in the crowd shouted "Tokyo Joe" in the vain hope of it being played. At that time Bryan just smirkednow were getting it live and the crowd are lapping it up. Introductions follow during various parts of the show, TGPT getting a huge cheer. Chris Spedding gets a huge cheer after being introduced by Bryan as being from Sheffield. Colin Good gets introduced as "The Professor". I didnt really enjoy "My Only Love" on the Roxy tour, but for some unknown reason I really liked it when it was played in Sheffield, and it gives Chris Spedding the chance to shine. Limbo keeps the rhythm going, Boys and Girls slows things down a bit with an extended and haunting finish. Jealous Guy gives me the chance to sit down for a while! An extended version of "Tara" gives a chance for Bryan to rest for a while and a quick change into a shiny grey suit, black shirt. "Tara" just doesnt sound right if its not played by Andy Mackay and never will The backing singers appear in beautiful sparkling dresses, did they look classy or what :) :) A very animated Bryan storms through "Do The Strand". Theres been some talk of him not engaging the crowd before but he seemed really animated, waves to the balconies and stuff like that. During a few of the songs it looked like he was directing his singing and vision towards the balcony to his right why I dont know! Bryans interaction with the crowd will depend on his mood, the venue and the response he gets from the crowd. Ive heard it said before that the crowds in Scotland are really up for it, so it must be the case that at some of the other shows the atmosphere just wasnt right. It was (surprisingly) right in Sheffield though, everyone on stage looked like they were genuinely enjoying it. Even though Chris Spedding seems to get more coverage, I really enjoyed Mick Greens guitar playing and even more so was the fact that he seemed to be grinning a lot. Maybe I should analyse all the ins and outs of guitar solos etc, but for me a good gig is where everyone on stage and the crowd has a good time, this is what was happening in Sheffield. The sound balance was first class. >From what I remember three songs for the encore, "Baby Blue", "Shame, shame, shame" and "Lets Stick Together". "Shame, shame, shame" has had a bit of stick on-list but I thought it was really storming. We got treated to a Bryan "leap" on stage mimicked by both backing singers. I think its sad that "I thought" has been dropped, but maybe it doesnt fit in at the end of the gig. It would be much better if they brought it back and slotted it in towards the start of the show. I looked at my watch and 90 minutes had passed, but for some reason it seemed like Bryan had been on stage longer. Its a shame that the set-lists are pre-determined at the start of the show, Bryan really looked like he enjoyed himself and I suspect they would have quite happily played a few more numbers. It would have been great to see "Out Of The Blue" which would have spotlighted Lucy. On paper the set-list looked like it could have done with a few changes, but it kind of flows quite well the way it is. Sure I would have liked to have seen "Hiroshima", "Kiss and Tell" etc, but I really was surprised how well it slotted together in its present form. A totally enjoyable show, for those of you who havent seen it yet - you will like it! So back out to the chill of the Steel City, a quick chat with Simon Galloway and Kirsty outside and homeward bound across the cold Pennines to Manchester. Back home, many bottles of lager later, a few Roxy tunes and a quick bite to eat 5am bed-time "Next time is the best we all know"next gig Manchester cant wait! Y!
