I only noticed how much I liked it when i did a casette for the car with Gemini Moon on it and I realised that I wanted to hear Chain Reaction after it instead of whatever I recorded next. BTW A Wasteland/Windswept is Ferrys most beautiful music/lyric fusion, with the part where it breaks into Windswept from Wasteland pure genius. And "I Thought" does seem optimistic to me - the last verse having the day "smothered in gold" - the sort of imagery only Ferry can conjure up. Simple yet beautiful......."and when you tell me pass it on - I'll pass it on" ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Oct 2002 11:07:54 +0100 From: "richard-mandy" Subject: [AVALON] Mail on Sunday There's a picture of Bryan on the back page of the Financial section of the Mail on Sunday today. The usual pre-drinkies event was organised in the Moathouse bar along with the great and good in attendance. And us. The venue, the Clyde Auditorium, is affectionately known as The Armadillo due to its cuddly titanium architectural. Perhaps it symbolises the city. Sharp metal forms and (cuddly) bear hugs (or at least arm-grabbing-attention-demanding actions) are the sort of things that Glaswegians are known for. For all those with their own ideas, answers on a postcard please. All the usual bods were there, including Scots both resident (moi, mon frere Raymond and his better half, Susan, J OB en famille, Graham Fairlie et femme, Diane fresh off the plane from her holiday, Alan R through from the East) and ex-pat (Jane & Al, Reecey), some from across the border (Jocelyn, Lynsey) and, most impressive of all, a couple of Dutch bods (Han- and his amazing dancing tricks and Esther looking EVERY INCH the Roxy cover girl in white jacket and a few rocks on loan from Asprey & Garrard. I now need laser treatment on my peepers). And on to the gig.as yall know The Only Face as the opener, provides a pleasant slide into the material. Then on through Falling in Love Again, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, Carrickfergus, Dont Think Twice Its Alright (a wee bit too quick for my taste but still a great song and version). And then THE THRILL OF IT ALL! and the stage stampede began. I made it to the front, practically breaking the spine of the unfortunate man next to me. I was stationed in front of the dancing (and now singing) girls. Much as they may be lovely, any compliments I could pay them would pale in detail compared to those offered by the male persons in my zone. In between the nice gentle compliments that they were paying to the ladies in very reconstructed ways, obviously, these boys managed to fit in a bit of singing. I had never realised how the chorus Awwwwww, awwwwwwwwwww, awwwwwwww parts of TTOIA could sound like the entire contents of an Old Firm football crowd in close proximity. Tokyo Joe likewise acquired an edge hitherto unbeknownst to those who have had their mental images of lotus leaves, kimono dresses and gentle tinkling music forever shattered by SAYONARAAAAAAAAAGGGGGHHHH. It was a blast. In my ears. The dancing girls were having a great time and one lady who came into her own in a way I havent yet seen on this tour was Sarah Brown. During MOL, herself and Spedding made a great team and shes made this song her own. Her range during the gig was obvious - her controlled raucousness in MOL compared to FFL where her ringing range would have qualified her for a spot in the Cambridge Kings College Choir Christmas Special. Im sure she could accessorise a frock collar funkily. One other real high spot for me was Tara, a song Ive not been too keen on during this tour, thinking its moment had passed. However, with Spedding coming in on guitar, it pushed the song onto another stage for me and it was really lovely. It stopped being an impersonation of last years version and gave it an identity of its own on this tour a real and unexpected pleasure. Ferry preened, camped and posed away throughout, a particularly hairy moment being his enthusiastic jump towards the end of the gig. It scared the bejesus out of the dancers who accepted the challenge and jumped back (a la Stand in the Place REM video) meanwhile Ferry was already sashaying his patent-clad pieds back across the stage towards the slinky Ms. B, grinning in an indecent way. That got a lot of approval from The Boys (and, as you can imagine I use that terms loosely) next to me. And then it happened. The lady next to me started moving strangely. Swaying and bobbling oddly. Was she ill? Was she tired and emotional? Was it a religious epiphany? God forbid, was it a dodgy prawn baked potato? I was beckoning the St. Johns Ambulance bods when I suddenly felt my (very inconsiderable) shoulder having EXTREME pressure applied to it and my (Patrick Cox) feet being driven into the ground. What in the name of God was this phenomenon? Just as I was hurtling through the barrier of light and pain, it evaporated and she wasnt next to me any more. Had I shuffled off the mortal coil and was now in the slightly worrying position of convincing St. Peter that a couple of misunderstandings between friends is nothing? Ah no. The determined lady was accompanying Mr. F. on vocals. Lucky him. At least the stage people made sure his Gucci-adorned shoulder was as perfect as when he came out of his dressing room although his hair was a bit mussed up by the experience. Maybe I shouldnt be a smarty-pants, Im sure superstars need to be counselled through that sort of trauma. Her friends apologised to me for their dancing disturbing my evening of intended drawing- room-easy-listening. I told them that was fine but if they could pay for a chirpractor and a good neurologist for the newly acquired bumps on my head Id be chuffed. In fact, in Victorian times some quack would have felt those self-same bumps and declared me criminally insane. Whereas, what I can now do with my double jointed arm could get me a part-time job on the Who tour if Pete T. feels a bit under the weather. So overall, yeah, I had a really good time. However, this wasnt the universal feeling among fans, some of whom thought the crowd was very subdued. Apparently the bouncers wouldnt let a lot of the crowd down to the stage, and chased after some people, extracting them from the crowd and insisting they go back to their seats. I can understand. I mean lets face it, you get a rough crowd at a Ferry gig, all those sequins and satin jostling for attention. And thats just onstage. Anyway, one thing I know that Edinburgh crowd are a right miserable bunch and that thought will keep me warm while I miss tonights extravaganza.
