The disparity of musical genres on Frantic evokes Bride rather than albums that have a similar sonic feel like Mamouna, FYP, and B&G. I think, however, that it's the lyrical content that binds the curate's egg. Bride was full of post-Jerry angst, and recorded in a hungover chemical fog. Spenner taken from the plane to the studio in a wheelchair, such was his drunken state. Bryan arriving in Europe after a "lost" 8 months in LA, okay if you dig the grave, wandering through the dark, the dream lovers dreaming apart. The self-penned tracks, as usual, lyrically reflect the covers. Themes of isolation (This Island Earth, Carrickfergus), obsession (Can't Let Go, That's how strong my love is, When She Walks) and self-loathing (Take Me To The River, all of the above.) Frantic is indeed a hotchpotch but with a bit of intellectual cellotape you can begin to shape a picture. I should firstly address Jonathon's pained perplexity at the juxtaposition of Goodnight Irene and Hiroshima. Before or after Bete Noire - take your pick - the quiffed cappuccino quaffing genius started to straighten himself out. The death of his parents, the procreation of boys, the avid collecting of art, the assault on addiction (tobacco, drugs, sex,) even taking up sports (tennis, golf, personal trainer.) To the late unlamented Paula Yates "I'm a born again athlete!" A lot of the 90s output chronicles the cold turkey. Midnight Train, Which Way To Turn, Blinded by the life I'm living and, of course, Hiroshima. Unconscious in Versailles Press play begin See my life flash by Oh neon wind I wake up in Chiang-Mai Think I must jack in I hear the wild girls cry Oh neon wind Neon wind is a well-known reference to the heroin rush. Chiang-Mai is a drug haven. "Think I must jack in" - I rest my case. With me so far? Now Hiroshima follows Goodnight Irene. No connection? Take a look at the last verse of the Leadbelly classic.. I love Irene God knows I do love her till the sea run dry And if Irene turns her back on me I'm gonna take morphine and die Irene goodnight, Irene goodnight Goodnight Irene, Goodnight Irene I'll see you in my dreams Goodnight Irene, Goodnight Irene I'll see you in my dreams The themes are consistent; drugs and suicide. The yearning for, and attempts to address, addictions whether romantic, sexual or chemical, lead to thoughts about taking the ultimate midnight train. In many ways Frantic moves away from these themes, and confirms my belief that he really is in great mental and physical health. The dysfunctional marriage no longer limping along, the apparently successful quest for a new impossible true love, critical acclaim, - Christ, even his website's starting to look cool. Starting to worry about the hole in the sky - non-ironic in my opinion - is a sure sign of someone more centred. I Thought is his greatest achievement since Windswept and the optimism in the lyrics is virtually without parallel in the canon. I've posted elsewhere about the thread of Americana within Frantic. The movie references - Monroe, Citizen Kane, Garbo, - iconic references, Jackie O, Bob D, Leadbelly, and so forth. The Goodnight Irene / Hiroshima segue seems to hark back to the 90s themes rather than the more positive, springtime feel of the rest of the album. Enough already. pip pip Martino - -----Original Message----- From: owner-avalon@smoe.org [mailto:owner-avalon@smoe.org]On Behalf Of KWil632057@aol.com Sent: 19 October 2002 00:42 To: avalon@smoe.org Subject: [AVALON] Every Goddess A Let Down.... I wanted to like it. I wanted to love it. Instead I am infuriated with what at times feels like a sampler album. Yep, I'm reviewing Frantic, occasionally great, often very good, in places crap, but as a collection of songs, mediocre and unfocused. My main gripe is the complete lack of focus of the album. Yeah, I know many of you will argue that the diverse nature of the songs and their styles is a good thing but look at any Ferry album and you'll find the songs work together creating an overall theme and mood. Not so here, this feels more like a collection of songs thrown together from the archive (which as we know, it is!) unlike, to pick two at random, In Your Mind or Mamouna which both have songs that could only possibly belong on those respective albums. Its often stated by Ferry that Roxy Music had three stages to their career. Frantic acts like trying to please all the people by including a bit of all the stages of Ferry's career: Dylan covers, bluesy rock/folk, rock, pop, dark 80s/90s solo soundscapes and a quirky Eno collaberation. STICK TO ONE FOR HEAVENS SAKE! The chasm between Goodnight Irene and Hiroshima... proves so massive that the songs feel like they belong on albums at least 20 years apart, not bang next door to one another... The problem with this is that listener invariably feels short changed because there is not more of the style that they like: eg: I Thought leaves many begging for more Ferry/Eno compositions, even wanting an lp full of Ferry/Eno collaberations.. I think this diversity is actually an inherent weakness that often manifests in Ferrys live performance. It seems jarring that he can go from IEDHAH to Jealous Guy on stage. Hard luck to the die-hard fans that JG is the one that he is contractually obliged to perform. All this would be acceptable bar the fact that this is the first solo album in what feels like an eternity and yet feels like the Lets Stick Together compilation of loose singles and b-sides. How odd then that the single releases are supported by the oddest b-side choices possible ('Which Way To Turn!!!!!!!!!!!!!' why?) when we know there are unreleased tracks in the archive (well, unreleased to me anyhow). Parts of this album really are great: I don't care when San Simeon was written, it's a haunting, beautiful song with a witty lyric and startling, memorable imagry. The kind of thing Ferry does well and not often enough these days. I Thought, unsurprisingly a fan favourite, is, again, classic Ferry and should be a Christmas single. It's reputation is certainly enhanced by appearing after the satanic One Way Love. Surely the worst song Ferry has recorded and certainly the worst released as a single? Whatever comes next, it's certain there will be another long wait, I really hope that anything new comes after the long rumoured box set (Christmas 2003 being the latest date) has used up a lot of the unreleased material, leaving a nice clean palette for a future release to be created upon. Jonathan ps. The cover is ok by me. Ferry frozen in 1987 seems to indicate a bit more subtext than that bloody Mamouna horse. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Oct 2002 10:05:39 +0100 From: "Martin Stockman" Subject: RE: [AVALON] Every Horse A Let Down.... When I knew her first, somewhere early seventies, she used to make dinners for the whole bunch whe where at that time. And she was Genius then, making everything from nothing. They're unsophisticated and uninformed in that way when a romantic gesture misses the mark, and they make me cringe every time I hear them. They do improve (somewhat) from there on. Martin, I don't want to misread what you wrote--are you talking about the optimism in the lyrics throughout _Frantic_ or only about "I Thought"? I ask because I'm not sure where the optimisim is in this album, and I certainly don't find it in "I Thought". I thought - you'd be my streetcar named desire My way - my taste of wine I thought - you'd be that flame within the fire One dream that just won't die All night - looking for new love Impossible true love - nothing at all Looking for new gods - looking for new blood Looking for you oh oh I thought - I'd find you walking in the rain Just like a wayward child I thought - I'd find you calling out my name So foolish is my pride All night - looking for new love Impossible true love - nothing at all Looking for new ways - looking for strange blood Looking for you oh oh I thought - I'd be your streetcar named desire Your man - the one you seek I thought - I'd take you deep within myself Subtitles when we speak Hold on - the flower says reach out The thunder says no shout is greater than mine Listen and hold on - untill the day fades out Smothered in gold To me, this song is as evocative of the end of a romantic relationship as it gets. Enlighten me. If only we had known each other then, you could have ridden with me - from Forest Hills. On the return trip, I got off the highway too soon and wound up in Harlem. One week later, Bryan began a 3 night stand at Radio City Music Hall - August 9-11. Tickets were 25.00. I had those properly timed and managed to miss the opener all 3 nights.
