Hello to everyone I met there and at other shows - you certainly are a terrific bunch of people. Looking forward to seeing you all later... Noticing several comments about Bryan's 'shyness' etc and his attitude with fans at the 'chance meeting'. Well I was lucky enough in Bournemouth and he was gracious and charming as ever. The rain was torrential, which left little to do so Richard and I drove into Bournemouth to check out the venue and parking as he was to collect me after the show (not being the greatest fan - he only accompanies me to 1 or 2 per tour and I'm allowed 'off on my own' for the rest!). We parked at the venue then decided it was time for coffee. Had noticed a surf bar a couple of buildings away from the hall and made a dash for it. Took about 45 seconds by which time we were soaked to the skin - hair dripping down my neck, jeans stuck to me. Threw the door open only to see Mr F......now my feet are rooted to the floor! I'm a jibbering wreck, my brains working faster than the speed of sound and coming up with rubbish. He was accompanied by a child whom I conclude must have been Merlin - about the right age and very definite resemblance. Finally managed a little chat and got my ticket signed. He stayed a while, before disappearing into the rain - for you information junkies mentioned in previous postings - was wearing grey trousers, the camel jacket, grey overcoat, green scarf and beret to overcome either the elements, the public or both! Eventually managed to calm down. Lunch time. Harry Ramsden not far away. Richard ate, I jibbered....then got myself together. Went to pay the bill only to see the two Ferrys walking in. He acknowledged me. I'm now wrecked again much to the amusement of the waiters. All I can say is thank heaven for little boys who like surf bars and fish and chips. I'm including Richard as well as Merlin in this comment! All this from somebody who avoids any contact, particularly the stage door. Had I known he would be there I would have run very rapidly in the opposite direction, but once you're faced with it - well, what can you do? I too prefer the mystery, the enigma. We've now met Bryan several times - every time by pure chance and he is always affable, friendly and happy to be approached. See you all in McDonalds or similar then? Mandy PS Loved the show - and so far as Cruel is concerned, while it's not one of my favourites on the album, it's absolutely terrific live and the highlight for me. Just enjoy. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Oct 2002 12:08:38 +0100 From: "J.Murray" Subject: [AVALON] Re: cruel, cruel, cruel, cruel... But I'm not sure that the show-offiness at right at the end of Cruel isn't a bit better than this... In answer, I think (or more realistically, *hope*) that the premeditated point of the last line - *James Bond, Jackie O/Johnny Ray and Garbo* - is that they're all figures, real or fictional, whose public image and legends all have to do with isolation and loneliness, whether chosen or accidental. If Ferry had been knocking out songs and lyrics as powerful as this after Boys and Girls things could have turned out differently in the 90's. But he was too stifled for some reason - maybe he was just too cool for even his own good. The song is typical Ferry if there is such a thing. It combines some rather odd features and lyrics with quite obvious killer hook lines (Why in the world are you so - Cruel ?) Frantic is a superb album and I think in a couple of years time i'll still want to listen to it. Is there any news on what he's doing next after this tour? There must still lots left in the can as only one verse of love war was used in fool for love. Midnight Train, Your Love has Died, Blinded by the Life I'm Living, You Can Dance, I don't want to, Alphaville, are all still unreleased. Personally I'd love to hear an album of Ferry / Eno compositions. cheers rob ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Oct 2002 10:45:03 -0400 From: KB Porter Subject: Re: [AVALON] Re: avalon-digest V7 #340 Natty Richard writes: "Y'all seem to be gettin' WAY too metaphysical 'bout Cruel." Perhaps 'metaphysical' doesn't accurately describe what we're gettin'. - Are you really certain that I exist? "My problem with Cruel is it jumps from Native American issues to a more everyday "factory girl" /"lonely boy" setting, then spouts some high brow cultural dumpster-diving with the list of names at the end" Agreed - this, too, is but one of the problems I have with "Cruel". Thank you, Richard, for bringing this nuance to the forefront so all of our membership may understand! Within the context of previous discussion, I believe this problem was subtly addressed: If one assumes that Ferry actively, knowingly wrote the lyric with purpose in mind to state 'life ain't fair', then what is more effective than to illustrate this universal misfortune by conjuring images of North American Natives who have been much abused over time, mentioning a factory girl and poor boy who don't even rate a romance, and rattling off the names of celebrity icons who may have been thought of by the masses to have had embodied all that is wonderful but really were victims of fate, too? I feel the problem of perceived discontinuity, as you describe, remains, even if the above supposition was correct: There is no readily recognizable 'flow' of theme in terms of lyric - the possible 'connections' that may be perceived, derived, are too 'disconnected', too jarring to the listener. However, if one was to assume that Ferry is a master-mind, that may be precisely an intended effect, perhaps, to engage the listener's interest? (Annoyance is one effective method for gaining attention!) I believe that may part of the argument set forth by Jonny, and this remains indeterminable. At the end of the day, it is the ambiguous nature of Bryan Ferry's lyrics that give them plasticity, lending flexibility to the listener who will interpret the lyrics as they chose thereby assigning personal meaning. That is the nature of true art. What we seek to know is on what level of consciousness is Mr. Ferry operating when he authors. We will never know. I still wonder how consciously aware BF is of variable interpretations when selecting words to convey any intended meaning. I remain interested in the mechanics of how things are done - the process. - Despite the fact that I will never know! Guess I'm just totally irrelevant - I've said enough - Good Bye! ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Oct 2002 10:51:07 -0400 From: KB Porter Subject: Re: [AVALON] Re: cruel, cruel, cruel, cruel... Saw Steve and family take their places on the front row and later was pleased to be introduced to Mark Stevens. This time actually saw copy of the set-list before the gig so after quick call to JO'B, 'vivaRM' had the list in record time. Audience was a bit subdued, lots of getting up for one song and then sitting down for the next but I think that is the nature of the current set-list.Finally everyone, well nearly everyone, got to their feet for 'LITD' onwards. Pretended to have misheard the steward when he said that I was not allowed at the front, after ignoring him for a minute he then said it was OK! Couple of things of note: Bryan sang the first lines of 'My Only Love' instead of the 'normal' spoken version, Mick Green was barely back on stage and had not got his guitar when 'Baby Blue' started-much onstage hilarity about this fact!,this time Katie and Anna kept their tail feathers away from clutching hands at the front of the stage, after Anna was nearly pulled into the crowd at the NIA-Terry was that you? Two people in the audience drew my gaze, firstly a guy sat three rows in front of me who watched the whole show through binoculars, in between swigging what looked like whisky from a bottle in his pocket and a lady wearing a see-through black dress that Cher might have thought twice about! Paul again threw his drumsticks into the crowd, both collected by Lorraine, a lurking list member, who is a big fan and has many, some might say possibly controversial opinions, about Bryan and Roxy-come on Lorraine give us your first posting! Post gig spoke to Katie-a first for me-very nice,Lucy and TGPT. While I won't go so far as to call Frantic crap, I will say it's a huge disappointment. The VASTLY SUPERIOR ALPHAVILLE , blows it out of the water. Actually Cruel appeared on the sadly un-released Alphaville, which WOULD have been after B&G. But then I've said all this before. BTW, I've recently been fortunate enough to finally hear Horoscope. Another shelved Ferry 90s opus. (As frantic is Son-of-Alphaville, so is Mamouna, Son-of-Horoscope.) The version of Horoscope that is making the rounds seems flat and nowhere near the final polish of BF's usual work there are a couple of oddities that may deserve future airing. I.E.: Midnight Train, Your Love Has Died, Blinded by the Life Midnight train reminds me of the songs on In your Mind. With a horns or string arrangement ("paging Anne O'dell") it would fit right in. Of the three it seems the least resolved, I could see why it might be a leftover. Blinded by the light, different from Blinded by the LIFE? Inquiring minds want to know. bbt Life shows promise, but seems to need work. However Your Love Has Died was a real surprise Not half bad. Pleas Mr. Ferry fix this up, & put it out. The funk-groove version of Mother Of Pearl is REALLY nice too. Not up to the original, but you can't dance to that one. Btw Btw, I recently got the Princess Diana CDs mainly for Sonet. Seems BF worked on this with Michael Kamen. Kamen has made a name for himself as a movie music writer, but back in the day he had a band called the New York Rock and Roll Ensemble. Worth checking out, folks. Especially "Roll Over," which has the best song about Necrophillia I can think of, on it. Kinda makes you want to get your steady to soak in a tub of ice water before bedtime. Good thing the curtains were closed, as I was clapping, dancing and singing along like a 2-year old watching Barney. I listened to the stereo mix as that is all we have set up with the DVD player now. As did someone else, I noticed a distinct lack of volume in Andy's parts, kind of like a channel is missing.
