I think he is shy but has had to learn to force himself to be more outgoing. I sort of understand that as I am the same way, though you can't shut me up once I establish a rapport. But I do believe it isn't natural to him and that he does very well coping with it. And yes, Bryan certainly knows what he's doing onstage. He still doesn't make much eye contact, picks empty spaces to look at mainly, which is fairly common amongst performers, though some are very gregarious and also have far less complex material, but he has so much to concentrate on with his performing that it is certainly understandable. He closes his eyes to concentrate and I'm sure he has made an art of peripheral vision and sees more than is apparent. Eye contact is fraught with problems, from getting thrown off by seeing people sing along to causing an avalanche of people wanting to touch you. As for the dancing, well, whatever he wants to do is fine with me as he's so much better at it than I am. I don't whether it means he's under the influence of the girl or not. She's really not a wild dancer or anything, so I doubt it. I think he just likes to cut up a little and enjoys dancing. Leaving London for Texas tomorrow, regretfully.........Paula >I believe Ferry knows exactly how to play an audience. ...This new-found >way of dancing on stage IMO doesn't look natural for him.Is this some >advice that his new young squeeze is telling him to do. It was shipped on the 9th, got it on the 12th. Amazon still estimates that I will receive it on the 21st - 25th!!! I had checked with my three area Borders Bookstores, as someone else on the list mentioned, and only one had it on the shelves, but at $31.99 (it's an import sir..)!!!! the others had sold their only copies. I paid $22.46 from Amazon with free shipping. Amazon now lists it at $25.49. Supply and demand? I have only heard it through once, but so far I like it. Some of the songs that were not my favorites are very well done. Avalon, which is one of my favorites pales in comparison with other performances of the song. I will listen through a few more times to get a better feel for things and see what I missed before. Someone mentioned that Andy's sax is barely heard. It seems that is somewhat true, but not in every song (defective equipment?, equipment adjustment?, user error?) The documentary could have been longer and more interesting. It seems like they just threw it together last minute for the DVD. I guess it is better than no extras at all on the DVD. I thought it odd, when Andy Mackay is interviewed in the back of a minivan, one moment he is wearing a seatbelt, the next he isn't. Odd. I give it 4.5 stars out of 5 for the lackluster version of Avalon, Andy's drowning sax and especially the lack of more content on the DVD. It would have been very easy to add extra content, ( bios, band pics from the tour, web links, etc...) But wait! that would have meant more time to wait before I could get my hands on the DVD...Never mind. Overall this is a gem. A definite MUST HAVE. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Oct 2002 13:19:45 +0200 From: Edwin van der Ende Subject: Re: [AVALON] Roxy DVD Arrived (Finally) The odd thing that strikes me when you listen to the sound of the DVD is that you have no LBE (the .1 subwoofer) channel on the DVD but that you don't really miss it. Do you think this is a deliberate effect, or just plain daft on Ferry's part? Like a lot of my favourite Ferry songs, I can never work out whether he really means it or not. It makes his best music very interesting to listen to. Narcissism to the point of farce: is Ferry a farcissistic songwriter? The best example I can think of is Take A Chance on Me, where what sounds like an obviously satirical, self-aware lyric like *All the world even you/Should learn to love the way I do* is immediately followed by a much more subtle, ambigous one: *I was blind/Can't YOU see?* The singer so aware of self to the point that he can't credit anyone else with the same powers of perception. Hence, on Cruel, *Nobody knows the trouble I see*, not even the people who experience it at first hand. What do you think? MELTING MOMENT FOR KING OF COOL 17:12 - 11 October 2002 Bryan Ferry: Colston Hall REJUVENATED by last year's Roxy Music reunion tour, Brian Ferry seems to be enjoying his best form in years. This sell-out show, in the middle of an exhausting world tour, may have seen Ferry playing to a full house of devotees, but by the end of the seamless 90-minute performance, the sweatdrenched icon was grinning as much as his audience. Principally a tour to promote his acclaimed recent album, Frantic, Ferry kept new songs to a minimum and trawled his back catalogue of solo material and Roxy Music favourites. Of the new songs aired, Goddess Of Love and A Fool For Love were outstanding, with his unique voice sounding stronger than ever. Ferry was bolstered by an eightpiece band (featuring a glamorous blonde percussionist who switched from gold harp to a tin washboard during the set) and three backing singers, including Katie Turner, the 21-year-old dancer who Ferry is allegedly seeing now that his 20-year marriage has ended. With Roxy Music's Paul Thompson on drums and solid guitarwork from veterans Chris Spedding and Mick Green (who older rockers would have recognised from his days as one of Johnny Kidd's Pirates), Ferry cruised through classics like Slave To Love, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes and the brilliant Jealous Guy. Not to be outdone by his water tight band, Ferry slipped in some sterling piano and harmonica playing of his own. By the end of the set, Ferry, who looks a fraction of his 57 years, had swapped his black dinner jacket for a shimmering dark silver suit. It coincided with a handful of Roxy favourites, including Love Is The Drug and Let's Stick Together, by which time his ice-cool aura had melted as he danced around the stage, arms outstretched to slap the hands of a few fans. Ferry hadn't said a word to his audience all night, save for a couple of band introductions, but his sheer star quality spoke volumes. This was a masterclass in suave, stylish pop and it's unlikely that we'll see a slicker performance this year.
