This lack of empathy in turn brings out the perceived aloofness that everyone recognises in Mr Ferry? I for one have always been attracted to this trait in him. It is his unavailability that maintains our interest - 'we seem to want the things we can't have' syndrome at work. His music is the driver promoting our need to know him - 'what makes this guy tick'. For the fan, striking a balance between the two desires/needs is the tough part. We attempt to reconcile our personal conception of the artist and the man through his persona and his music, since, of course, that is all we have which is tangible to us. For Avalon List members the challenge of reconciliation becomes daunting at times - the supply of 'information' may define BF more accurately than the definition might otherwise be if one was not a list member, but we may find that our charmed ideas of BF aren't able to withstand the factual definition that evolves with the abundance of 'information'. Truly, familiarity may breed contempt. - Every god/dess a let down. Does, or has, Mr. Ferry consciously perceive(d) and/or manipulate(d) this duality to his benefit? Any takers? - Is BF that masterful? Best wishes. We had an appointment with John Dillon to have a drink in The Dog and Duck in Soho. I also brought some pictures with me, which I took the night before, to show them to John. After a few lagers someone interrupted us and said: "Hey, you were at the gig last night". We looked at the man and we saw immediately who it was, Iain Dixon. He went to the restroom, came back and told us he had some company. We invited him to have a drink with us and so his company. A few minutes later he came back with the assistent-tourmanager Rebecca. I knew her, because I had a chat with her the night before. Iain is a very nice guy and enjoyed our stories very much. After a while Iain was waving to someone to come over here. And there he came, Colin Good. He took a chair as well and joined us for a few drinks. They wanted to see the photoes and they were very wild about them. Rebecca even asked me if the band could have them. Well, what should you have done? We made an agreement for York at the 25th of October. I'll give the pics at the afterparty....... "Er, you mean he hasn't heard it in a while?". "No, I doubt he recalls it all, he hates that album." Odd when so many of us are so familiar with all of the canon. MELTING MOMENT FOR KING OF COOL 17:12 - 11 October 2002 Bryan Ferry: Colston Hall REJUVENATED by last year's Roxy Music reunion tour, Brian Ferry seems to be enjoying his best form in years. This sell-out show, in the middle of an exhausting world tour, may have seen Ferry playing to a full house of devotees, but by the end of the seamless 90-minute performance, the sweatdrenched icon was grinning as much as his audience. Principally a tour to promote his acclaimed recent album, Frantic, Ferry kept new songs to a minimum and trawled his back catalogue of solo material and Roxy Music favourites. Of the new songs aired, Goddess Of Love and A Fool For Love were outstanding, with his unique voice sounding stronger than ever. Ferry was bolstered by an eightpiece band (featuring a glamorous blonde percussionist who switched from gold harp to a tin washboard during the set) and three backing singers, including Katie Turner, the 21-year-old dancer who Ferry is allegedly seeing now that his 20-year marriage has ended. With Roxy Music's Paul Thompson on drums and solid guitarwork from veterans Chris Spedding and Mick Green (who older rockers would have recognised from his days as one of Johnny Kidd's Pirates), Ferry cruised through classics like Slave To Love, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes and the brilliant Jealous Guy. Not to be outdone by his water tight band, Ferry slipped in some sterling piano and harmonica playing of his own. By the end of the set, Ferry, who looks a fraction of his 57 years, had swapped his black dinner jacket for a shimmering dark silver suit. It coincided with a handful of Roxy favourites, including Love Is The Drug and Let's Stick Together, by which time his ice-cool aura had melted as he danced around the stage, arms outstretched to slap the hands of a few fans. Ferry hadn't said a word to his audience all night, save for a couple of band introductions, but his sheer star quality spoke volumes. This was a masterclass in suave, stylish pop and it's unlikely that we'll see a slicker performance this year. We know how he is a perfectionist, smart dresser, vain,& rules what goes on stage. That's what a good performer does, captures you from the very last row & makes you stay glued no matter what else happens , your attention is on that stage. For instance take the Mamouna tour in 94. Not only the stage with all its dim lights & the shimmering see-thru fabrics created the aura of what he was about to deliver. When he came on stage & yes he even said in a soft voice, "are you ready?" & then== " I put a Spell on You" started & to watch him come to the edge of the stage & throw glitter dust.Perfect lighting, behind him that you could really see that glitter fall like rain. Of course the house went nuts. Yes. I say Ferry knows how to work a crowd to make them want more & that is what its about. Leave them loving you.---This new-found way of dancing on stage IMO doesn't look natural for him.Is this some advice that his new young squeeze is telling him to do. Wrong, Wrong.for Ferry. He has done ok being the dapper gent on that stage. No need to put in silly gimmicks to please the young lass. He is the gentleman when people run into him by accident so I wouldn't say he is all that shy. Usually shy people want even talk, they litterally shy away from being noticed. Ferry no way. Maybe he feels younger & alive now , we don't know all but he may just be expressing his joy-Maybe? We don't know about his love life only what he hints at through the music. Grant you, I hope the young lass, doesn't play him for a fool as we know where that will lead. But, new material could come out of this yet. In the meantime lets hope for the best for all concerned.
