A long time since my last post........ Last night's show was very good. The band looked relaxed and seemed to be having fun (although did Paul look rather pi**ed off before the encore?) I loved the broad range of songs, with Bryan playing something from almost every solo album. A couple of songs were played much too fast (Cruel, TTOIA) and how can you play Tara without Andy? The tenor sax just didn't work for me - much too clumsy. Great to hear Carrickfergus again (welcome back to the harp, Julia) and Tokyo Joe was a treat. I hope they mix the set up tonight. And what are the chances of Bryan talking to the audience.... - -----Original Message----- From: Johnny Reece To: avalon@smoe.org Date: 08 October 2002 14:18 Subject: [AVALON] Reviews ? >So, where are all the RAH first night reviews ? >I know quite a few of the squad were there... >Meanwhile, for a bunch of us, the 'ill Tour' continues >with horrifying pace, as I hear that our very own John >O'Brien currently resides in a northern hospital with >a very nasty foot fracture, as of last night - best >wishes John, and we all wish you a speedy recovery for >those dashes to the front at future gigs. > >Reecey... Oke Alan, see your point. Sorry if I was a bit attacky. But as many listmembers know and find out in the past three years there's only one roxy tribute and that's remake remodel If you want to check out how we sound download audio at www.geocities.com/corbroersen/try.html and maybe you stick to your point but at least would have a real saying about it, knowing how we sound. I am not talking about other tributebands. btw Dutch tributebands are just another thing. There more often than not verry good. I can't help it. It's becausse they are Dutch and well....you know.....dutch.....dutch are like if you can't steal it we make it ourselfs or something like that. That's why holland has so mutch great bands, it started after the invasion of Brittisch music in the early 60ties. Not just kidding. Birmingham or RAH? I'd vote for Brum, although the two setlists were identical I felt the crowd & atmosphere were more "electric" at the NIA. A big dissapointment I never got to hear "Just Like You", but the real big highlight on this tour for me is Mick Green's guitar playing, he breathes life into "LST" which hasn't been there since the IYM tour. "Cruel" is another fine example of his (& Spedding's) playing. Am I the only one who feels "Smoke Gets.." would sound better with TGPT? "Shame , Shame, Shame" moves & flows like a walrus on vaseline...."I Thought" is a perfect end. Another thing, in the last few days I've never spoken to more gorgeous women in my life!!!! My gym instructor cancelled my assessment today so, with time to kill I made my way up to the RAH. Seeing as i had literally hours to spare I opted to walk thru Belgravia and was stunned when, out of the corner of my eye and walking in the opposite direction and on the oppossite pavement was a beloved entertainer by the name of Mr. Bryan Ferry. Easily recognisable (he was wearing the same outfit he wore for The Sun's front cover story) I followed him into THOMAS PINK and noticed that he was selecting ladies blouses. He then had his neck measured, while i guiltily went to the counter to make a purchase. The next i knew he was next to me with about 7 shirts and 3 blouses (I was buying a super cheap pair of cufflinks). Feeling it was do or die I turned shook his hand and said ' I'm coming to see you tonight at the Albert Hall' to which he replied 'We're on at nine, although there's a very good girl singer on at eight.' 'Excellent, well....have a good show, all the best,' I calmly retorted noticing that he was staring curiously at my tie (an Antony Price original I might add) and with that I left Mr Ferry in peace..... (The shirts and blouses he purchased where all white, information junkies!) To Be Continued... ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Oct 2002 20:37:58 EDT From: KWil632057@aol.com Subject: [AVALON] RAH Review Part Two This was without a doubt a show which dragged me in both directions, the good bits were great, the crap bits grated. As always the RAH sound was appalling with Bryans voice nearly being drowned out by the band on many occasion. However the joy and energy thrown into the songs from Thrill of it All onwards made up for this. The acoustic opening was good (great to hear Just Like You although he clearly struggled at first) but I feel would have worked better midway through the set as they deny Bryan a dynamic entrance. Much has been made of the boringness of the 'crowd pleasers' on this list. Yes they are familiar, however the place came alive when he did LST and LITD. Its what the public want and if it makes 'em happy.... There was a risk that Out of The Blue was heading towards the 'fed up with that one' catergory, thank god he's dropped it from this tour. Skipping manfully to the end, its a shame that the set ends with Bryan walking off leaving the band and dancers looking confused and lost, almost like they are saying to themselves 'Is that it? Shall we go home then?' An awkward moment I felt. A major asset is Sarah Brown. Her contribution to My Only Love is stunning. She owns the song forever in my book. Tour Merchandise: Why is it chiefly aimed at 13 year old girls? Did they all put down there Will Young lps, in the rush to buy Frantic? Are Ferry fans really keen to dress their kids in this paedo-friendly gear? Almost all the t-shirts seem to be extra tight fit with twee 'Kiss and Tell' or 'Lets Stick Together' legends on them. NO NO NO. WRONG WRONG WRONG. Every once in a while, I figure I dare stick my neck out. So this is what I think. Rosie Thomas, the support slot for BF, makes nice music I like listening to, but sure her Minnie Mouse on helium voice is weird. The worst thing on this tour is seeing how she has been undermined and now feels the need to say the words "Bryan Ferry" between each song to keep the audience on her side. On Monday, she described the audience as 'kind' and hoped she "didn't send everyone to sleep". Why has she been made to feel so bad she has to apologise? Bryan Ferry was savaged in the Standard last night for being arrogant, cool to the point of sub-zero, narcissistic, aloof, lazy, offering weak and hurried versions of songs that pale next to original versions...it's all true. BF doesn't connect with audiences at any time in the show, apart from limp waves to the whole hall. Sometimes the hand doesn't quite reach shoulder level. Sure, he moves around a lot, works up a sweat but in the aid of what? Could he not try putting more into the performance? His voice has already been weakened by this tour and he's only just half way through. He never spoke to the audience once apart from to name people in the band. Some songs were so fast, they moved my companion to say "With his repertoire and the price of the tickets, we want the real thing, not the K-Tel version". Sure he's improved the set no end since this tour started up, but Love Is The Drug and Do The Strand were jokes last night with musicians having distinct trouble keeping up with the speed of it all. I agree. it's odious to have sparring matches between this star or this star, my dad is bigger than etc etc, but there are people who have been going the same length of time, who can really put on a show and have people thronging afterwards with the excitement of seeing what they've just seen. The most spontaneous thing to happen last night was the crowd rushing forward at the beginning of Thrill of it All and, as we all know, that wasn't spontaneous at all. It *was* good to hear Just Like You last night for the first time (for me) at the last night (for me) on this tour.
