I was front row directly in front of Bryan and then at his feet once everyone got up. Well, I've always said I wouldn't rest until I was worshipping at the feet of the godhead, and I was that night! I got to meet Pauline and Josephine, Diane, and Duncan and wife, hung out with Dillon, and I'm now in Bath with Timon and his Tom, getting ready to drive to Tintagel and cloister myself in a castle on a cliff by the sea -- unless something too tempting in London comes up, of course. JNHP/Fool for Love was the high point for me, hearing it live for the first time. I also have to add that Bryan, at one point, went airborne, startling both guitar players, especially Sped, rather badly. Anyone know the brand of guitar Sped's was that was the black one with the grill? I couldn't make out the distressed logo but suspected GirlBrand as they do some similar ones. It was fun seeing Green for the first time. I'd been curious what his live sound was going to be like. To say he and Sped are very good is to grossly underestimate, of course. Paul is always a stand out and tremendous asset. He makes it look so easy. They all do. Colin was laughing and playing the whole time as if it was nothing. Paul threw me a stick, which will go home on my carryon luggage as I'm taking no chances with it! Looking forward to Bristol! The curator of an art gallery asked an artist for a painting depicting General Custer's last thoughts. Two weeks later, the artist unveiled the painting, an enormous canvas with a lovely blue lake painted in its center, with a fish leaping from the water with a shining halo around its head. On the shores of the lake were the most detailed pictures of Indians screwing. After gaping at the painting for some time, the enraged curator demanded to know what the theme was supposed to be. The artist said, "You asked for a painting of Custer's last thoughts," he explained. "That's it. Custer was thinking, 'Holy mackerel, where did all those f*cking Indians come from?!'" Well, this was a night up with the best of them! A bad start though, we got stuck in traffic due to a road accident which shook Josephine( my sis) and me up a bit, so we went for a quick drink to steady our nerves. This meant we had to find our seats just as Bryan began ' The only face.' Were we embarrassed or what?! Spent what felt like an eternity whispering 'sorry, sorry' before we got to our seats, blushing profusely, but thank god we didn't irritate anyone too much(I hope)! I enjoyed the slow start,it gives you the chance to just sit back and take it all in,and boy, was I gobsmacked! Bryan was just superb, one of his best performances ever. His voice on these slow numbers is awesome and the band are nothing short of brilliant, each member contributing to an irresistible sound which took my breath away. Totally delicious. A particularly excellent TTOIA took us all by storm and it was soon seat clambering time! The stewards at the front seemed fine, thank goodness, and the crowd were certainly up for it! Josephine grabbed me and managed to get near the front, I turned to my left and realised I was standing next to Steve(siren)! We said hello and then we all sang and danced our way through the whole show! 'Limbo' was stunning, as was STL, and TJ. More from 'Frantic' would have been nice,as well as This is tomorrow, The in crowd, The price of love, All I want is you and Beauty Queen but you can't have everything! A most beautiful 'I thought ' brought a sensational show to a close, sis had never heard it before and was captivated by it! Steve introduced us to Mark(Stephens?) Mandy, Chris(Cassidy) and John Dillon.I went up to Paula(Brown) to say hello. Josephine,John,Paula and me strolled by the canal chatting and winding down. John and Paula kindly invited us for drinks at the Hyatt where they were staying.Soon after we arrived we met up with Duncan, Ann and Diane! We chatted into the early hours and had a fabulous time! It was great to meet all of you, thanks for putting up with us, it can't have been easy, two sisters who hadn't been out on the town together for ages! You were all charming and I hope you enjoy the rest of the tour! BTW john,I owe you a Jameson! I have been fortunate enough to see Bryan on his last 3 tours ( including Roxy Reunion) and fully appreciated what isaw and for me icouold have seen him night after night and he could have playrd the same set and it wouldn't have bothered me .Due to family & financial commitments unfortunately i can't see Bryan on the Frantic tour so just enjoy it mabe your last chance. I was lucky enough to see Queen,Thin Lizzy, Ian Dury in their prime but regret not realising what i was seeing how many of you wished you had seen these artist's live or Nirvana,Elvis,John Lennon or Roxy with Eno? As for substanvive musical comment'ts Frantic is a decent album most disapointing track Hiroshima sounded like the Human League pre Dare wasted Jonny Greenwoods guitar playing (Radiohead one of the few new bands worth listening to) As i said in previous contacts maybe Bryan could re-record some of his weaker covers for the new box set to be released as i feel his voice maybe better now . Possibly some duet's with Bowie,Annie Lennox maybe Wyclef Jean something a little a bit experimental . At Ipswich; there on the front row as ever Reecey,Ivor and Chris T. I was also at the front just near to Katie, who ended up next to me at the front after the rush (great cap by the way!). Slightly more relaxing than the Birmingham gig, everyone stood up and went forward at the start of 'Love Is The Drug' and just had a great time dancing until the end. Interesting moment during 'My Only Love' when Chris Speddings guitar went dead at the start of his solo-talk about a look of panic!-only for about 10 seconds though, then normal service was resumed. Birmingham; great to finally meet and chat to Terry and Mandy. Much larger arena, crowd more lively, mad rush for front during 'Cruel' which meant a much longer stint standing up at the front, but great fun as always.Bryan and the band seemed to be having a ball and at the end TGPT threw his drumsticks to the front. Post gig, myself, wife Anne and Diane retired to the Hyatt hotel for a drink, we just got served as the bar closed to non residents and then linked up with Avalonians and (very usefully hotel residents)Paula and John from the US, Pauline and her sister Josephine.New twist on an old joke "John are you just pleased to see me, or is that one of TGPTs drumsticks in your pocket?"-needless to say it was the latter!- US drumsicks-2,UK drumsticks-0. Great discussions ensued with topics ranging from the fairly obvious favourite albums/first gigs to the slightly less obvious topic of Debbie Harrys underwear!Time passes when you're having fun and suddenly it was 1 o'clock in the morning. Amazing to me, that three people that I had met that night, for the first but hopefully not the last time, had all been to my first Roxy gig 1979 at the Birmingham Odeon! The truth about Avalon--and indeed about any mailing list--is that it is what you (and I and the other subscribers) make it. If you don't like what topics are being discussed, you're free--if not encouraged--to start others to your own liking. In addition, carping about setlists is one of the Top Ten Things People Do On Mailing Lists. I believe it's generally #3. (and, for what it's worth, I believe you are misunderstanding or misreading the critical comments posted to this list by knowledgeable, long-term fans, as attacks.) And Alan, now that you have our attention, perhaps you might repost your request for advice or your topics of conversation?
