But even at Bryans lowest point (and I can't think he has made a "bad" album), he never produced anything as critically panned as "Tonight" or "Never let me down" (evan Bowie himself agreed). When Bowie handed all his artisted integrety over to session men & producers it was an appalling time for him. This year has been an impressive return to form for both men. Bryan is even getting quite brave with his set lists! Bowie of course has been superhuman with his! Hello Avalonians, I thought I would de-lurk and answer this one, I met the lovely Bryan years ago (80's) when I worked at Tyne Tees TV, he had exactly the same accent as he does now, well spoken with just a hint of the North if you listened for it, it was completely natural, no sense of it being forced. My mother in law knew Mr & Mrs Ferry snr (she lived in the next street when they were in the old terrace) she said that Bryan's mum was thought of as a nicely spoken "proper" lady. I always thought that people from Washington were "maccams" not Geordies as they are so close to Sunderland, certainly my husbands side of the family would chop off a limb rather than support Newcastle United or call themselves Geordies! Up the Boro May I remind both Ally and Andy that Newcastle United are not only in the Champions League this year but, unlike the Maccum scum and the Boro, will not be in the fight for relegation at the end of the season, although you might meet Chris Cassidy's lot down there (hey calm down lad, only joking). And no wonder Polly was thought of as a "proper" lady, she was from Newcastle (while his Dad was a Washington lad) so therefore reet refined. Andy's got a point though about peeing in doorways, N'castle on a Saturday night phew, just as well the Bigg Market's on a hill. Apologies if this makes no sense to anyone outside the UK (or inside it for that matter) but there is intense regional rivalry in the North East mainly based on football, but apparently started by the snobbism of the ship building industry (cue Robert Wyatt). Day 1 : Rotterdam. Sunday, 8th September, 2002. 9am. But hey, plenty of time to get to the airport (or so I thought). Much being pissed around later by London Transport and British Rail re previously unnannounced engineering works, I found myself on the train heading for Luton Airport, panicking whether I'd make the check-in time and be able to meet up with Mr Canning, for the flight to Amsterdam. My head was heavy. Should I be making this trip ? A week of nasty flu-like symptoms had preceded my journey, including having virtually no voice whatsoever just 48 hours earlier, but how could I not take the chance ? A Remake Remodel gig followed by 3 Bryan Ferry gigs in different towns in Europe, in the company of so many great friends. I took the chance. Three hours later, and we meet up with Jocelyn at Amsterdam airport, and we're off on the train for the short journey to a very rainy Rotterdam. John O'Brien was due to follow later from the UK, and later still, Nigel Hollis, Trez and Raymond, and Jane and Al Fraser too. A very good turn-out from the UK, no doubt. We discovered later that the intrepid Mr O'Brien couldn't make it this time re work pressures, but we all know that won't stop him in future. The Dutch contingent duly began to arrive in our meeting place in Rotterdam, and a whole pack of us were off to dinner, just a stones throw from The Blauwe Wis, where Remake Remodel were to play, later. Incredulous looks from the Dutch in my direction. "Reecey, you're drinking WATER" !!! By 10pm in the Blauwe Wis this had changed, naturally. Too many offers of drinks came my way, so I got to thinking that for years, decades even, scientists and doctors the world over have all failed, one by one, to come up with a cure for the common cold, and the flu. What if Jack Daniels was the cure, and nobody had realised it yet ? I simply had to find out. I felt I could be on the verge of a world famous scientific breakthrough. I was wrong. Remake took the stage to an excited crowd. The Band are tighter, with a harder edge than usual. I decide to use the camcorder I'd brought along, to grab some film of the Band, at this one-off special Pre-Ferry soiree. By the end of it, I'd caught almost the full gig, together with some great after gig quotes, being personal 'fave Roxy & Ferry songs' from the attendees (in varying states of sobriety) and of course from the Band themselves. I am prepared to accept bribes from all who participated in this filming, for certain clips not to be shown in the future. You know how to contact me. One of the major highlights for me was 'San Simeon', with Ron adding extra verses from 'Dream Home' in there, along the way. Nice touch ! 'Fool For Love' was beautifully performed too, a real surprise to hear that one in the set. This really was the perfect warm-up for the gigs to come - but more than that, a great event in itself. Once again, I loved the way they performed 'Chance Meeting', and Leslie's performance in 'A Song For Europe' always goes down a storm. A typical crowd pleaser is 'All I Want Is You', which is extended for our very special drunken participation. All in the crowd had a fine evening, and proved once again that, no matter what may befall us in years to come, none of us will have the opportunity of future employment as backing vocalists. But we don't care. Off in the early hours to some fine hospitality from our Dutch compatriates, and a new day dawned, as we awoke to the day of the next phase of our very own European tour. Day 2 : Amsterdam Monday, 9th September, 2002. And so to Amsterdam. Han & Esther drove us down early afternoon, and we set off to find our Hotel. I was slightly alarmed to find it was right by one of the main canals - as if you check any guidebook on the city, it warns of mosquitos having you for lunch if you so much as step near those waterways, particularly in humid weather - which it certainly was. This is a fact I was to personally discover later. At around this point, the trip started to go seriously wrong for me. I knew I was far, far from being 100% fit to even make the journey, but as the afternoon wore on, this became ever clearer. Dizzyness, headaches, nausea, temperature, you name it, I had it. Just before 7pm Ivor, Jocelyn and I set off for the gig. I got as far as Amsterdam Central Station, and I knew I wasn't going to make it. I wasn't happy, at all. I mean, all this way, to have to back out of one of the gigs ? I was trying everything possible to get rid of this feeling - I was positively rattling with pills and potions in a vain attempt to stop the inevitable. Ivor suggested tossing a coin. I agreed. "Heads, you come to the gig. Tails, you go back to the Hotel". It came up Tails. "Best of three" ? said my inner thoughts, but one look at the faces of my two companions looking at the sweat pouring down my forehead, told me everything. So, back to the Hotel, to crash out, and wake up a few hours later to discover I had been an evening meal for some of the Amsterdam mosquitoes. Several hours later, they decided they'd chomp on Ivor too, just for luck. Ever wondered why so many Dutch houses have mosquito nets around ? Now I know. So, I have to leave the Amsterdam reviews for others to do, some have appeared already, I believe. It was great to hear later though, that Tokyo Joe had appeared in the set. This was one I had been hoping for, though had missed the damn thing ! I still have a wish list of course, which includes The In Crowd, This Is Tomorrow, and Love Me Madly Again, amongst others. I can but hope. Tomorrow's another day, and the Brussels gig beckoned, and I was determined to make it... Reecey... (continued) Yahoo! Day 3 : Brussels, Tuesday 10 Sept 2002 : A pack of us got the long train journey down, from the Netherlands into the heart of Belgium, after waving Jocelyn goodbye - she was heading back to work. Ed, Renate, Ivor, Esther, and I arrived in Brussels mid afternoon, and set off for our various hotels. A quick meal pre-gig (I felt well enough to eat by this time, following my over indulgence on spring water during the day) and we arrived at the Venue, in time to meet up with Andy Mol, who had driven down from Roosendaal. We took our seats, and boy, what seats ! There was no danger of a 'stage rush' in this particular venue, as the front row was right up against the stage - a small, 3 ft high stage at that. The Dutch were positioned at one side, right in front of Lucy and Julia. The guys were happy. Ivor and I were positioned at the other side, directly in front of Katie and Anna. I suddenly felt so much better (what a coincidence !). Great gig - and special for me as I'd missed the previous night, of course. Highlights were definitely Tokyo Joe - 25 full years had passed since I had last seen that performed 'live', and The Thrill Of It All, which was so much better than I anticipated. I almost expected a 'cut down' version a-la Hard Rain, where a great deal of the lyric would be absent - but not so. The whole song. If there was just one problem, it was the audience, and I'm always wary of venues where the seats are right up against the stage. When there's no space for a stage rush, more often than not, everyone remains seated until near the end. This was certainly the case (apart from our crowd, naturally) but no-one asked us to sit down, which surprised me. It makes it more difficult for the Band too, as the whole experience remains rather detached - especially for Bryan himself. No matter - the Band were tight, and up for it. Boys And Girls was especially great, it's one of my fave BF solo tracks anyway. Cruel powered along too, and really works in a 'live' setting. Eventually, the crowd did get up, to the usual end of concert stuff - Drug, J. Guy etc. I really should have taken the time afterwards to have taken down all of the addresses of the other people in the first few rows, and sent them xmas cards later this year, asking if the bastards had woken up yet. I felt that One Way Love was a strange inclusion for part of the encore - sure, it's bright, breezy and poppy, but most of the audience clearly didn't know it. Apart from that, I think it's bloody awful. All in all though, a great gig, and the experience was heightened afterwards by meeting up and chatting briefly with some of the Band. Off to a Brussels pub to put the world to rights (with spring water frenzy again) and all was well. My heart went out to a girl we met in the bar, who was so excited because her boyfriend, who worked at the venue we'd just come from, had got her signed copies of all of Ferry's CDs. None of us had the heart to tell her - they were ALL forgeries - it clearly wasn't Bryan's signature. We didn't say a word ! I mean, 'Best Wishes, B. Ferry'. Hey, I don't think so !!! It wasn't even a good attempt at the signature, and was clearly done by someone who had never seen the infamous Ferry scribble. Shame on you, Sir ! Following this, we all came close to getting arrested, I kid you not - as we decided a hoarding in one of the main streets of Brussels was no longer needed by the town - it contained a poster of the gig we'd just been to. Oh, the things we do, after a few beers (or, err, water). The poster just wouldn't come out of it's perspex casing, so we all decided that we had to take the entire hoarding away with us as a souvenier. At this point, a Police Van drove slowly by, watching our every move, and stopped. We all slowly walked away, pretending as if nothing had happened, like shame-faced little boys in a playground who were pretending they hadn't been naughty at all, but had been caught red handed. The Police waited till we were out of sight, and drove slowly away. Phew ! Still, it would have made a good story. (Probably.) A night in a rather super-duper Hotel beckoned (a very lucky last minute internet bargain meant we got 200 Euro rooms at about 60 Euros !) and we would be up and running (or, in my case, staggering) once again, come the morning. The last stage of this particular European jaunt beckoned. Antwerp was waiting... Reecey... (continued) Yahoo! Day 4 : Antwerp Wed 11 Sept 2002. A short train journey to Antwerp, and I'm feeling fragile again. Thought I'd kicked out the dizzy bug, but not so. Out quickly to a Net cafe, to catch up with work etc, and my heart sank when there was 90 emails in there. Lots to deal with and reply to, so a couple of hours was spent typing away, instead of chilling out with a fine selection of pain killers and water back in the Hotel. A quick snack nearby, and great to see yet more Dutch arrive, especially as I'd missed seeing so many of them in Amsterdam. Dick, Petra, Rob, Han, Sjaak and all the rest (sorry, too many to remember !), great to see you all again. Off to the Queen Elizabethzaal around 7pm. A special venue for many of us, as this was where we had all met for the very first time, back in February 2000, on the ATGB Tour. This was exactly where the bizarre Dutch-Brits alliance was first formed, and we all know about the various jaunts back and forward to Ferry, Roxy, and Remake gigs since. It's all Antwerp's fault. Many of us were positioned in the 1st and 2nd rows (as ever... !). A military operation was being planned. Some stage right, some stage left, and I found myself at the other side this time, in front of Lucy and Julia. The gods were looking after me. Or were they ? I felt fairly awful again, with the heat inside the hall. The dizzy spin I'm in. The military operation, was to vault the row in front, on the opening chords of The Thrill Of It All, and hang the bloody consequences. It worked a treat, right on cue. Many in the first row were wise to this too, and went for it. We were up and running. The high seats caused a little bit of a problem, but I turned back the clock to when I did the high jump at school, and easily and successfully reached the front in one superb jump and hop movement (well, ok then, almost. I tripped a bit and nearly landed on my arse, but hey). Adrenalin kicked in, and all was fine. A slightly extended Boys And Girls, with Bryan playing around on the keyboards at the end, was a real highlight. The Band seemed happier too - they had a vociferous crowd right there, just feet away. And there we stayed... Strange but true story : A member of the audience about 5 rows back was so incensed at the stage rush, that he threw one of his shoes at everyone at the front. And security threw him out ! Really ! We still don't know whether he got it back. Some nations get annoyed and start wars. The Belgians throw their shoes. It was the same set as Brussels, minus One Way Love. I expect it'll change a little throughout the rest of the tour, with a few songs coming in and out at various times. Still hoping for a few of my own faves, but aren't we all ? I still think The In Crowd would work so well, with the current Band. And that was that. My second little jaunt into Europe on the Ferry tour, following the Denmark trip with Mr O'Brien back in May. Much has changed since then, in the set. A night in an Antwerp Hotel with a spectacular relapse and no sleep followed, and I knew it was time to come home, and see the Doc. Almost missed the plane at Charleroi, but the nice lady let us through, even though we'd missed the last check-in time. Back home Thursday night, and slept. And slept. And slept. I'm now back at work, with enough anti-biotics to keep a whole army of pharmacy firms in business. Gotta get well for Paris, just over a week away. Salut ! Reecey... - ------------------------------------------------ Yahoo! Theres a small ad in the back of this months "Q" music mag for the UK tour. The small print at the bottom says "Bryan Ferry On Stage 8.00pm". Considering that "doors open" for most venues at 7.00pm, I'd guess theres little time for any support act. The ad lists all the dates as being sold out with the exception of RAH (7th and 8th of Oct) Aleks Yahoo!
