BBC tapes found - listen online http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/music/2251425.stm Lost glam rock tapes found Slade became regulars on the chart show A set of rare Top of the Pops recordings of some of the biggest stars from the glam rock era have been uncovered. The BBC did not keep the majority of episodes from the early days of the TV chart show, which launched in 1964. There are only four episodes left from the 1960s and it was not until 1977 that the BBC began to keep the show in its archives - meaning there is very little evidence of Top of the Pops from its colourful heyday. Now eight audio cassette tapes from 1974, featuring the likes of Slade and the Bay City Rollers, have been found thanks to a fan who contacted the new TOTP2 website. Click here to listen to the clips Although they were recorded by the rather crude method of placing a tape recorder in front of the television, as was common in the days before video recorders, the quality is surprisingly clear. The tapes also feature DJs from the time introducing the acts including Sir Jimmy Savile and Tony Blackburn. Six clips from the show can be downloaded from the website, including performances from Bryan Ferry, Wizard and Suzi Quatro. The site's content producer Edward Russell is excited about the find. "It is sad that we don't have any recordings from the early days of Top of the Pops, but at the time people didn't place so much value on nostalgia and the tapes were expensive to reuse. Suzi Quatro led the way for girl power in pop "I'm sure there are lots of people out there that have similar recordings, who perhaps don't know that the BBC wiped its tapes, and we would love to hear from them. "There were also a few video recorders around, although they were very expensive, so there may even be visual recordings around somewhere." Mr Russell also believes there could be television stations outside the UK that have copies of episodes that were broadcast at the time. Top of the Pops 2 is a sister show to the main chart rundown and trawls the archives to play both popular and long-forgotten performances. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Sep 2002 13:42:52 EDT From: KWil632057@aol.com Subject: [AVALON] Robert Palmer Vs Bryan Ferry Can the water pistol be filled with flammable material? Needless to say, our travels were yet again dogged by illness with poor old Reecey just about making it through the Rotterdam leg of the equation but was forced by dizziness and nausea out of the Amsterdam gig. So this review is as much for him and our other reluctant absentee, Mr O'Brien, as anyone. First to the Remake Remodel Pre Party. It was practically a year to the day that we attended the Remake's post Roxy gig in the very same venue. They did a spectacular job that night, following everyone's favourite band with a gig that ripped it up. This time round was no different. It being a Sunday night the venue wasn't as full, but two minutes into the set it felt like a sell out house. They really do improve every time you see them. The Remake virgins amongst us (yea that's you Nigel, Al and Jane and relatives) were astounded by just how good Remake are. I recall the same feeling at A Mad Affair where Juliet Mann of Ferry's management remarked that they were so spookily good that Ferry would be unnerved that some one else could capture the Roxy sound so authentically. But what I like about the Remakes is that they are brave. They've never just gone for the straight forward set, although the obvious crowd pleasers are in there. They've opened with the In Crowd before , so we know it would work Bryan, just have faith! They've done great versions of Shame, Shame, Shame that I wouldn't even have thought of wanting to hear live. They've reminded us of how fantastic All I Want Is You is (and we've reminded them of how terrible, albeit creative, our backing singing can be). But the real stunner in the set this time round was a completely original take on San Simeon. Same speed as the Frantic version but beefed up beyond belief to be more menacing, we suddenly noticed Ron was singing "you float in my new pool, deluxe and delightful" in perfect tempo. Effortlessly zig zagging in and out of Dreamhome and Simeon it worked brilliantly. Perhaps there's a similar medley in Cruel and Casanova. Oh and they did a perfect rendition of Fool For Love. And what else I like about the Remakes is you always get over 2 hours worth of performance, and nearer 2 and a half when the foot stomping audience keep calling them back for more and more. If you don't get a chance to see them before, make sure you make space in your diaries for their forthcoming appearance early next Spring when our plans for A Mad Affair 2 (Another Time Another Place) become concrete. Now over to Amsterdam. Having very kindly given us beds for the night, great company, a huge breakfast and a lift to Amsterdam, Han and Esther dropped us off and made their way off to catch the band at the sound check. All we wanted to do was check into our hotel for a much needed rest after a late night of Dutch revelry. A quick nap and scrub up later we were off to find sustenance, and Mr Reece started to plummet downhill. Hard to tell when Reecey's looking pasty, but he didn't look his usual abused self. A flick of a coin, heads you go to the concert, tails you go back to the hotel, and the gods (and Ivor)prevailed that Mr Reece took an early bath. He would have passed out for sure at the venue it was so hot. Ivor and I (having wrongly got off the metro at the Ajax stadium) wondered if we'd got the wrong night for the gig. The place was empty. Tumbleweed blew down deserted boulevards (in Dutch). I thought I heard someone whistling the theme to The Good the Bad and The Ugly. Where the hell is everyone. And come to think of it, where the hell's the venue? Finally found it along with 5,000 very punctual Dutch - non of this blasi British wondering in half way through the support act. We find the Dutch Contingency and travelling UKers and decide to change our Euros into beer tokens. Then realising they are collectors items printed with Bryan Ferry's concert details we pocket them instead of drinking beer! In for a concert that looked like it was going to change beyond recognition. Mr Ferry appeared in a brand new impeccable black Dior diner suit with brocaded lapels and white shirt. Breathily he delivered the Only Face, Lucy accompanying him on violin. On to Don't Think Twice with Colin Good on piano. He too is wearing the said same Dior suit but strangely looks like an over dressed school boy on a parent's evening. Into Carrickfergus with Julia on harp and Spedding on acoustic guitar and not even thinking about wearing a decently tailored suit - that's old rockabillies for you. Then Smoke Gets In Your Eyes which I thought really suffered for not having a drummer (even if was The Legendary John Sutton who nightly murdered this song during the As Time Goes By Tour). Then the instrumental where roadies mill around wheeling off harps, and other band members shamble on in the dark. So Mr Ferry's support act to himself ends and the real up tempo gig begins. No familiar guitar intro but a piano into Thrill of It All and the Dutch are on their feet, We're over the seats and off. Party time! Shame this isn't towards the end of the set where they could jam it for ages, it's over too soon. But straight into Cruel to keep the feeling going. Then the surprise of the evening. Tokyo Joe. Bloomin' heck, haven't heard this since '77. Funny how all the daft little mannerisms and claps come back to you years later. Then straight through to what should have been Both Ends Burning only for it to be replaced by the worst song in the Universe bar non. Limbo and Boys and Girls sounded full and competent from where we were (with our heads stuck in the monitors), have no idea how it would sound further back the hall. The piano on Boys and Girls echoed out in a For Your Pleasure style and Bryan shook his jowls and mumbled into the mike. It was only when the set returned to the obvious from Jealous Guy onwards that I realised how bored I'd become with that part of the set after being so invigorated by the new additions. Baby Blue became an encore. Let's Stick Together chugged out (without the lyrics being changed as they'd been the night before) and then we sauntered into a blissful I Thought. Ferry blew his harp and his exit, by returning to take his bows instead of riding off into the sunset. Then the night was over, but just beginning as a little throng of hedonists headed off to the red light district for a session of froth drinking and "quality sleaze and filth" (which we were promised, but which didn't materialise). I learned how to clean my windows using only a bra top (the young Dutch housewives in their part glazed apartments seemed very adept at it) and I saw John O'Brien's ladies still selling Ikea furniture, although some of the more stylish ones had classic Knoll chairs. We also learned that if you order Pitten Bollens (some small deep fried dumpling things that sop up beer) in a bar with no food licence you will be mistaken for a police woman. No food, but skunk, coke and scag's no problem. Perhaps that would have sorted Reecey out. Hope the ongoing clan managed to get to and see Brussels and Antwerp OK, and that the home coming friends are suffering as much as I am. And a huge thanks and hello to all the Dutch, who as ever were fantastic company. Yes, it features the same photos from the session used in the Sun front page cover feature, as well as some from the same session that were not used (except reproduced here on glossy stock paper in high quality), but poignantly (or not) there is also a photo of the couple (as they must now be seen) taken in April. It's claimed that when she saw this pictures was being taken, she quickly moved away from the star. That action might now be interpreted a hundred different ways (and I'm sure will be). Anyhow, if anyone at Avalon would like a copy of the magazine and is prepared to cover my expenses, please e-mail me *offlist* and I'll be happy to oblige... Apologies if I'm a bit late on this one, but here's my "two penny's worth" I don't think it's "pathetic" for someone to have their own views and principles. If their own views about such things are so strong, why don't we respect that? Even though I find Ferry's situation somewhat "unusual", personally, it wouldn't stop me from listening to his music. I'm not sure if Cliff Richard dates anyone (younger or older than himself), one way or the other he's pretty popular, not that I'm a huge fan myself Aleks - --- KWil632057@aol.com wrote: > The point is thus: To leave the list and give up an > enjoyment of Bryan > Ferry's MUSIC because he is seeing a girl younger > than himself, is to put it > bluntly, Pathetic. Could be really cool if we got some more stuff like "All Night Operator" etc.. - here's hoping. Shame that "Both Ends Burning" doesn't seem to be included.
