Of course, I didn't win until the very last minute (I was notified the day before) and it had only been a 30-year wait. Be prepared to amend any previously held image of me as a cool, rational individual and we delve deep into the dark psyche of fan worship... I arrived at an alley down the side of London's Oxford Street HMV at 9.40am just as it began to rain, met 'Julian' and got my limited edition silver wristlet with purple metallic printing, announcing the Heathen signing. A beautiful and collectable item in its own right. People who were already guaranteed places in the queue then began to queue in the now pouring rain. I sloped off to a Starbucks for a coffee, risking looking cool by waiting but really harbouring a desire not to look too drenched. Bought the new Clive Barker book in Borders, then went back to HMV (got wet again) and took my place in the 3rd of five queues all arriving at a signing table on a platform at the back of the store. Naturally, Bowie's greatest hits rang out through the store while we awaited his 11am arrival. People queueing nervously made small talk. One couple made me feel like Methusaleh when they asked me when my first Bowie concert was. "1973", I answered. "Wow", they replied. "We didn't see him live until the 90s". Reader, these were not children, but momentarily I felt like I'd come out of the ark. David Bowie arrived promptly and after a brief interview, amplified over the system, with an Australian DJ from Radio XFM, in which he was asked to confirm where he now lives ("New York. And it's raining there too!"), what dates he has coming up (he started listing them OK, but then ran out of steam, suggesting there may yet be more...) and if he'd enjoyed the Moby Area 2 tour (he namechecked all the bands who took part, including Ash, whose new Best Of CD he bought later, as part of a bulk buying HMV shopping spree). Then the signing began... Coco Schwab was much in evidence and, at one point, Bowie called her across. They conferred. She then asked security guards to bring women queueing forward to the front and they then got their Heathen albums signed first, ahead of the men queueing. When I eventually made the front of the queue, I asked the security guard why that had happened. "Apparently, Bowie wanted to be photographed with girl fans". And I was there. Handing my CD to *DAVID BOWIE*, asking him to write "For Richard" and he duly obliged. Babbling a bit about being a longtime fan, I managed to bring some dignity back into the situation by telling him I've not enjoyed anything more than the current tour (true). He signed my CD and I got to reach into a jacket pocket and give him a gift (a CD "Hip Today?" by a German band called Vincent, who name check him in the sleeve notes) telling him he might like a couple of tracks and a card that mentions a few things I knew would go out of my head on the day. This last was quite a coup, as security people removed all items from people when they arrived at the front, but I had seen this happening and moved my gift and card to a jacket pocket. David Bowie thanked me, remembering to call me by my first name and we shook hands. By the end of the signing, Bowie had only received the CD and card plus a small bunch of flowers, so I felt a greater chance that he might read/listen to either one sometime. I drifted away from the dais in a daze, completely forgetting my Borders carrier (of which I'd been relieved) until just in time I went back to retrieve it. I saw an old acquaintance Victor Wheeler, queueing without a wristlet on the offchance. Then I spotted some new friends, Nigel and Carole, who I first met at Jonathan Ross' Bowie special this year and we seem fated to meet at every concert since. Nigel was positioned to take pictures of Carole, when she got her album signed, so I joined him to chat. Glad I did. Carole asked him to wave to Nigel but when he looked, he couldn't know who Nigel was as we were in a crowd of people. Being quite tall, I pointed to Nigel's head, Bowie laughed and smiled for the camera. So a little and brief exchange with the man. Compared to the wait, the moment of the signing was all too brief and I got drenched twice more making my way back to work, but today I was the happiest drowned rat you ever saw... PS During the appalling (but, OK, I found myself watching it for half an hour) teen movie Threesome with Lara Flynn Boyle on UK TV last night, Bryan Ferry's "Is Your Love Strong Enough?" was playing during a brief seduction scene which soon goes wrong and doesn't deliver. When I saw Roxy at Madison Square Garden last year, I bout a program & decided to stage door it, Took a while to find the right door, but just then out pops the Thin White Duke, himself. (I'd heard two guys in the john mention he was there) Walked over close & said from a distance so as not to panic him: "Mr. Bowie may I shake your hand". He stopped, the 2 ladies with him continued to the limo. We shook hands, told him I was a long-time fan, asked if he'd seen an art dealer friend if mine that he buys from on occasion. He was really friendly and magnanimous. Stupid me didn't get his autograph. Made up for it by getting ALL of the Roxy bands autographs except Chris Spedding. Was high for days, felt just like a 16 year old. I know you feel the same.
