Andy also wrote about the publicity value of the Sun front cover feature (two whole pages inside also). Colleen, whatever you may think of the suffering it might cause others (and you're right), the fact that, at 56, BF's lovelife can command three pages in the national tabloid press IS fantastic. I don't know if it was set up (although almost EVERY love tangle tabloid story in the UK is fictional and done to promote a new book/DVD/CD) or not, but the story is on the front page because, worryingly, with Bush and Blair raging against Iraq, world economies and ecologies on the brink of collapse et al, the editor of Britain's biggest selling paper thought THIS was the story that would sell most copies on that day. No matter what the content of the story, this makes Ferry much more bankable. If it doesn't sell CDs or tickets (and I think the fact of the tour is quite pertinent in the story - Katie is backing singer/dancer in the BAND, they were spotted in Stockholm on the TOUR, etc), it should make Virgin or whoever realise that more people are interested in/have been hearing about Bryan Ferry than, say, 3 years ago. And it should make him more worthy of investment. Cynical or no - and, after all, cynics are just disillusioned romantics (to quote George O'Dowd and doubtless many others) - there really is very little BAD publicity. Although Paul Gadd may wish to differ. One of the most disappointing things about the outdoor festival set of the summer was the speed with which it was all delivered, meaning that Crans-sur-Nyon and Belvoir Castle, for instance, timed at 1hr 10mins which, for a top-of-the-bill act, is disgraceful, no matter how many songs were performed. Not judging by the length of show rather than quality - the speeded up versions of songs were definitely inferior. So everything suffered. Hi All, Over the past couple of weeks I have noticed speculation as to whether the release of the LONG, LONG AWAITED Bryan Ferry Archive Box Set is imminent. Now, I personally hope that it will be available within the next twelve months or so, though, due to the Ferry's marriage break-down, this project may be put on hold yet again. If so, then maybe this will give us time, as fans of Mr Ferry's music, to voice our opinions on what material we would like to see contained within the Box Set. After the poor turn out of the so-called Roxy Music Archive Box Set, i.e., three disc's just covering album tracks, and a fourth, which for me, was slightly better than the previous three, containing B-sides and remixes, maybe we should hope for something better from Mr Ferry's Box Set. With this in mind, I have compiled what, in my personal opinion, is what I would like to see: BRYAN FERRY ARCHIVE BOX SET (4 CD's) 1. CD 1 The Full Royal Albert Hall concert from 1973/4, orchestra et al. (If the soundboard still exists) to promote his release of These Foolish Things and Another Time, Another Place. (continued on Disc 2 if need be). 2. CD 2 Archive & Live tracks. More tracks from Glasgow 1988, but not the tracks already released in on the CD singles comprising the Archive & Live collectors edition released in 1993, and the single releases of Your Painted Smile and Mamouna. Any BBC/Peel session recordings from the early 70's A compilation of live tracks recorded throughout his solo tours to promote every album The songs performed at the Polish Film and Music festival, (Lets Stick Together, Shakespeare's Sonnet #18), and the songs performed at the charity gig with Jools Holland, and possibly even the songs performed at the Meltdown Festival. All in 1999. (Again, if soundboard recordings exist, and if Mr Ferry as any legal claims to the material recorded at these venue's.) 3. CD 3 Unreleased Archive material. Basically the material recorded for the Horoscope sessions. Outtakes from all the album sessions, including the version of Dance Away (if such a recording exists??), recorded during IYM sessions, and also the material recorded during the time encompassing the ATBG to the Alphaville/Frantic sessions. 4. CD 4 The Remix Project and B-sides: All the 12" mixes of Mr Ferry's single releases, including some of the tracks available on the 39 Steps - 5 track mini-album, if possible. Also a few b-sides, though all of these are now available on CD, with the exception of: The Right Stuff (Brookyn Mix), B-sides to the 7" release of same track, if memory serves me well. Well, that's what I would like to see contained within the Bryan Ferry Box Set. If, on the other hand, the Box Set follows the same procedure as the Roxy Music Box Set, with just album tracks and a few b-sides, and remixes, then I personally, would feel let down, especially since all the Roxy/Ferry back catalogue as recently been remastered, and all the b-sides to Ferry's solo singles can all be obtained in CD format now. What opinions do other members of Avalon have of what should be included in the Box Set? Cheers, Michael ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Sep 2002 00:00:03 EDT From: KRNCHSE@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] Ferry and the Sun In a message dated 9/5/2002 10:41:50 PM Eastern Daylight Time, Chandla911@aol.com writes: but the story is on the front page because, worryingly, with Bush and Blair raging against Iraq, world economies and ecologies on the brink of collapse et al, the editor of Britain's biggest selling paper thought THIS was the story that would sell most copies on that day. Which is why the Sun IS in the top tabloid spot. People don't want to wake up in the morning, look at the rain filled sky and hear a garbled cancellation message from some Customer Service lackey. As I believe Mr. Stockman has previously pointed out, Ferry IS a national Icon, 'Up there along with the Queen Mum' ( Well at least he is amongst any self respecting Seventies Dandy, whatever side of the Roxy/Bowie fence your flared strides happened to get caught upon ...) Love it or hate it, page 3 still seems to titillate menopausal males on this side of the pond? Whatever they are doing, they seem to have a captive audience and have got it right. Which, come to think about it, the National Inquirer doesn't do too shabbily either? I think he should be very cautious in these early days of tabloid tittle tattle- like a stroll down a Parisian Blvd., one wrong step and he may well be in deep S*! T . We've all seen heroes courted and felled in an instant by the British Press. I cannot imagine, by any stretch of my Rum addled imagination, that he would do anything to encourage this type of publicity at this time of his life? Funny, but somehow a fleeting thought just passed through my mind. Can you imagine reading about Robbie Williams on the front three pages of anything in 2035 ? I sincerely hope not! Interesting. I wonder if I should have waited. Before I came back from vacation in Europe, I bought this DVD at Heathrow Airport at a duty free shop. I was excited and wanted to see the DVD's as soon as arrived home. It was going to the capper on a wonderful vacation. What I FORGOT to ask what format it was in. When I got home and popped it in my DVD player, it did not play! My DVD only plays Region 1 encoded DVD's. I was all set to sit back and enjoy the DVD when I get a message saying to Check the Regional Code. I had not read the directions very well when I purchased this unit in June. I was pissed until........... I loaded the DVD on my computer and it was able to play! My Gateway computer has controls where I can adjust the regional code to play many different formats (did not know that until then). Once it was rolling I thoroughly enjoyed watching it. Nice footage AND the extras: behind the scenes with the band (I hope Phil gets bigger dressing rooms in the future, the rehearsals ( very loose), parts of the press conference announcing the tour, and of course the concert. Nice to see and hear Mother of Pearl in concert. Was this the concert where Bryan's underwear was showing? If so I did not see it, however I did see a flash of his belly. I was wondering if members of this list where up front at those shows and how you can be identified? Note: I also bought, the Stones Bridges to Babylon DVD, Slave to Love- Bryan Ferry The Best of the Ballads CD, and the Best of Fleetwood Mac- The Early Years CD. Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music: Video Collection, previously only available on tape, will be available on DVD Region 1 on October 1st in North America. No UK, Europe or Asian release dates to my knowledge yet. I WILL wait for the release of this one. Once bitten.......
