His latest album, "Frantic" (Virgin), finds him back on familiar ground. While his own compositions are as tuxedo-and-cocktail suave as you would expect, it's the covers, which include two of the most imposing entries in the Dylan catalogue ("It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" and "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right"), that give Ferry the best opportunity to display his impeccable taste and interpretive bravado. http://www.newyorker.com/goingson/recordings/ Paula ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 02 Sep 2002 10:24:20 -0400 From: KB Porter Subject: Re: [AVALON] SOTW: "Mother of Pearl" I'd like to thank those who have expressed reading pleasure with my recent post - I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Of course, MOP could just as easily be interpreted from a Ferry narcissistic, self love point of view. Because I am partial to Mr. Ferry's work, I'd naturally like to think of MOP in the nicest possible terms as a romantic citation about finding the perfect love. I believe the slightly vague and open nature of Mr. Ferry's lyrics easily lend themselves to various and wide ranging interpretations. It's exciting, isn't it? The same song is so chameleon that it flexes with your mood and personality! Absolutely wonderful, and infinitely interesting - only the listener is the determinate factor. While I totally agree that I Thought is an excellent track, I think that it might suffer if played live as part of its charm comes from the layered vocal tracks of Ferry and Eno. I doubt if this could be recreated on stage, especially with the so called backing singers that are on the current tour. Cheers, Tom. Yes I agree really - particularly on the backing singers - but Limbo is a layered complex track if ever there was one and anyway "I Thought" with the harmonica would still be better than a greatest hits medley of Jealous Guy Slave to Love LITD, etc etc etc. If Ferry had been so minded he would have done the same old hits on the Limbo tour as the later music was complex to recreate. But he played most of the Bete Noire and Boys and Girls set. Windswept was never recreated in its full beauty live but I the Glasgow crowd I was in loved it anyway. I mean Street Life would be more exciting than these tracks. I do agree with you but a bit of adventure and creativity is needed. I am waiting for him to come to the US. I would be disappointed not to hear
him take a go at " I Thought ", which for me is by far the best track on the
album. Come on Bryan, take some risks, even if it may be difficult to
recreate the studio sound!!!! If it does not work, we are hardly going to
abandon you for the next cheap thrill.

I think Ferry should do all of his own material. He has so much great
material in his catalogue. I guess the masses expect a few Roxy Music
numbers and a concert is about pleasing everyone. But I want to hear Roxy
Music perform "Do the Strand", not Ferry.

Subject: [AVALON] Re:Doppelgangers (Send in the Clones?)

I recently posted regarding the likeness between Ferry and Al Pacino but I
only noticed the resemblance in the ads for Pacino's new film "Simone" not
"Insomnia". Btw, "Insomnia" is one of the few good films I have seen this
year, along w/ "Road to Perdition".

Subject: [AVALON] Bryan Ferry - "front page news"

Bryan Ferry and Katie (34 years younger) have made the front page of The Sun
newspaper in the UK. Pretty sure most of the story is borrowed from Bunte,
but with the spin unique to the Sun, they're focussing on the age difference.

If you'd like to see the story, go visit www.the-sun.co.uk

If you'd like a copy of the newspaper and are prepared to cover my costs,
please e-mail me during today (Tuesday) saying where you live and I will send
you details of how to get it and reserve your copy.

Best wishes

Have now read the whole article and while the tip-off may have come from the
Bunte article, the main piece is based on a shopping trip in Stockholm where
the photographers have followed the pair around and quotes from "insiders"
who say they are trying to keep this all a secret from the rest of the
band...some hope, now.

Best wishes

Good job they left "Jealous Guy" in the set-list
then...
