As the week wanes without any lyric interpretation offerings, I shall irreverently submit my most current and up to date understanding of MOP's fine lyrics cast in light of recently mentioned exploits. This analysis is not for the 'faint of heart'. Read no further if you can not tolerate a very unflattering portrait - the one fabled to reside in the attic - the one that shows the scars of life. Further more, should you read beyond this point, you have implicitly accepted the agreement that you will not engage in the practice of 'flaming' me on this post. - ---------------------------------------------- MOP, first published in 1973 on the third Roxy Music album, "Stranded", explores a complex psychological creation that is drug induced. Specifically, the drug is cocaine. Cocaine is aptly described using the visual attributes of the interior of a mollusk shell (mother of pearl), it is lustrous, shimmering, glowing, sleek. The interior of the shell is plastic as it creates the mother of pearl layer, and this coating is semi-precious when removed from the shell. In much the same way, cocaine is plastic for the numerous forms it may take, and when extracted, purified, it is semi-precious, too. Thus, based on physical similarities, the powder referred to lyrically is cocaine. On an individual level, for those who succumb, cocaine's affect and effect are profound. At the beginning of the fling, it is fun staying up, partying all night with euphoria, a mania of unbelievable proportions that is self-believed. God couldn't make you feel better, so divine and infallible. But the morning after, oh, the let-down, the crash, the heaviness of life's realities - but what are they? Living is just going through the motions, a pantomime. What matters? Forget all your troubles! Feel good, superior, be part of Thee Cult, a worshipper at the looking glass, mirror. That is what lady pearl does for you, she has personally invited and successfully courted you. She is the ultimate lover, so fine, sexy, so exciting. As the affair grows, so does your dependence. You can't go out without her, you've got to have her with you all the time - it's so depressing without her - yet it is so edgy that you need a nice whiskey to moderate the sharpness - got a number? smoke it. But is your lover faithful? You wonder, begin to suspect things, see things. You doubt your friends, cut them out of your life, only the 'doctor' remains. You recede, need privacy, a place in the country. You are engaged in an ever decreasing circle. You doubt your future, but you won't give up cocaine, you wouldn't trade her for another girl - she's the only thing that matters. You adore her until it is time to fall exhausted upon the bed. You have surrendered. Your drug induced dreams strangle you, still, you'll get up and seek the holy grail she promises but never delivers. The 1970's culture of cocaine is very well described throughout MOP. Low lights, high music. It's a party, crazy. Everybody's doing it - look!, over your shoulder, see? No, I shouldn't do that! OK, (yes) I will. Cut the lines, right place right time - never mind any personal doubts, this powder's a cure-all. Have you a future? No no no no.... ((yes), she promises, "I'll give it all to you."). To the 'outsider', therein lies a mysterious, glamorized world of rolled one hundred dollar bills, expensive pearly powder that guarantees a good time - if you've got it, you're in with the 'In-Crowd'. The 'outsider' doesn't see beneath the surface, the 'insider' knows that - the idealized myth is perpetuated. - The 'In-Crowd' is where it is at! There will be no lack of Gorgeous guys and girls, they'll love you for a few lines. They are disposable misses. There are rounds of drinks and rounds of toots. The 'outsiders' do not notice the gnashing of teeth, the greed of the cut, they haven't learned the subtle nuances between an acetone or an ether based snort. They don't comprehend the absolute center of life that cocaine possesses with an addicted user. And if they should learn, they will come to know the insanity of it all. Cocaine culture; party hopping, club prowls, pool house antics, rug burns, better pack insurance - a Colt .45 will do, ATM withdrawals - dwindling inheritance, erections without orgasms, shifty shiftlessness, lies to cover, angles to consider, a mirror, a porcelain plate - hell, this table will do, small vials, tiny envelopes, blades, rock shavers. It's a world best left behind. The Eagles stated the reality succinctly, "You can check out any time you like but you can never leave." Burned out over the thrill of it all. Ay Carumba!!! Nice piece of writing, KBP. I don't really connect MOP with cocaine, per se. While BF may have been tooting a bit, I think it was his later sojurn in LA where he really Hoovered every speck he could. I see it as a search for the Ideal lover, be it at a wild party or in the more philisophical reaches of the mind. If memory serves this is the one where the track was compleat as a really long instrumental, & our boy came to the studio & suprised all with the lyric full formed? Always liked the imagry. Even to Canadian Club, a brand of liquor who used to show High-Life situations in their magazine ads. Picked this up from the newsdesk: BRYAN FERRY SEEKS RUSSIAN GIRLFRIEND Ageing rocker BRYAN FERRY is devastated by the break-up of his marriage - and is seeking a Russian girlfriend to comfort him. The LETS STICK TOGETHER star's wife, LUCY, walked out on him earlier this month (AUG02) and the singer has his eye on a new set of wheels, a 1960s BENTLEY S3 continental convertible, to distract him from his heartache. But according to British tabloid newspaper THE NEWS OF THE WORLD, Bryan, 56, is now looking for someone equally smooth to keep him company in the front seat. He reportedly said to a pal over dinner, "I think I'd like to start seeing someone quite exotic. Where can I meet some Russian girls?" ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Aug 2002 13:57:14 -0500 From: "Paula Brown" Subject: [AVALON] Fw: Ahaheim ON SALE NOW!! I rang De Montford Hall to be told that the tickets were not yet on sale. In my panic to get seats I rang the Way Ahead Box Office to be told that this was a standing only venue. I was quite pleased actually. This meant I could get there early and get to the front, as I have done on numerous occasions. Subsequently I discovered that the hall is a seated auditorium so I again phoned the agency and whilst I was disappointed that I was not going to be sitting on the front row in the stalls, I was repeatedly assured that I had premium seats in the front of the circle. The tickets arrived today - rear circle. In 30 years of following Mr Ferry and Roxy Music I have never had such bad seats. I feel very let down by this agency and would not have purchased these seats had I been told of their location. I could have gone elsewhere. Just thought you should all know to avoid a similar situation although obviously it's too late for this tour. The final question the agency rep asked me was did I want to buy others for any other venues. Thank goodness common sense kicked in and I declined, contacting the venues themselves. At least I have decent seats elsewhere. Has anyone else suffered the same?
