However for Ferrys most ardent fans to wonder at the reason he was once able to write songs of lost love with such meaning is completely reasonable. It is obvious that a sensitive artist will be influenced by emotions. I'm not interested in who had a row with who but I am interested in how Ferry's personal life affects his work. The Bride Stripped Bare was made with Bryan doing a lot of coke, depressed by the departure of Jerry. From the aimless boredom of In Your Mind to the edgy brillance of the BSB in a few months............................. His music comes from searching, loss, romance, glamour, heartbreak and his music is real, a part of him. Whilst respecting the "gossip" thing genuine fans can be concerned and interested at future direction, personal and professional. It may come as a surprise to some folks, but I agree with you, Rob. (well, there's one point I strongly disagree on, but more on that in a bit) I do think that it can be interesting to read the details of a songwriter's life into his/her work, just as it is with a novelist, poet, painter, etc. I do believe that the creative ways we take are often as much about ourselves as they are about the end product; for example, certainly the dissertation I am struggling to finish is as much about things that are very personal to me as it is is about the ostensible topic. And even if we're wrong in the end--about 10 years ago I went to hear Kurt Vonnegut speak here in Washington at the Air and Space Museum as part of a series about strategic bombing (his WWII experience included his being in Dresden as a POW during the bombing of that city). During the Q&A session which followed it, someone asked him "how do you see your experience in WWI has having shaped your work." Vonnegut, whose every book has referred to or been consumed with exactly that experience, looked at the questioner and said, with a bit of anger and annoyance, "It hasn't, and I don't understand why I keep getting asked that question."--it's still often an interesting read on the list. My only caveat in this particular case is that, in that it's still fluid and unfolding, I'm not sure we have anything yet to put under the microscope. I'm also compelled to raise this point: songs of searching, loss, heartbreak, etc., don't necessarily have to arise out of a particular discrete incident, located in a particular moment in time. Certainly the creative impulse which drives [or has driven] Mr. Ferry relies as much on imagination as on experience (viz., _Siren_). Which leads me to my second point. To me, that's one of the most sublime moments in the entire Roxy oeuvre. I suppose a bunch of you lucky people have already seen BF this tour. I know Mick's background and all that, though somehow he never really crossed my path in a way that I remember and I remain unfamiliar with his sound. So tell me, what sort of style does Green have on guitar? Like Trower had that signature smokey smooth thing I so hate personally but still I have to hand it to him: He did have a signature style that a lot of people liked. Spedding's got this sort of tight precision, somewhat restrained with Ferry, punctuated by searing flares. Manzanera's so far over my head I can't even do him justice except to say he can do both of the above and much much more. So what's Green's style and visible strengths on this tour? Is he sharing lead or pretty much playing rhythm and/or second guitar? Is he passionate or is he sleepwalking? (I had the idea that Ms. Hall was no slouch with a spoon either.) I remember my disappointment when it first was released. Not knowing at the time about the glacier up our boy's nose, I assumed it was lame LA hired hands. On reexamination of the album notes the players are usual suspects from other records, except Wachtel & Marotta, who Ferry hasn't worked with again. While the original songs are more than adequate the only top drawer song is "Can't Let Go" which is sort of Ferry's "I Will Survive" "This Island Earth" not my favorite, but not bad. All these years later I still can't get behind "Sign of the Times" The music's fine, The lyrics still seem Trite to me. "When She Walks in the Room" is, er, OK. "Carrickfergus"...yawn. & I could never figure why BF was sleepwalking thru the covers. The only one with real fire is "What Goes On" Don't get me wrong, Ferry could record the telephone directory and make it interesting, however he's best when he actually puts in some effort to remake a cover as his own. All in all "In Your Mind" is much better. All originals, & he sings like he means it. The only dud is "Rock of Ages" "This is Tomorrow" (title stolen from Richard Hamilton's Independent Group Exhibition. Love it when the horns crank up.) "All Night Operator" (Ferry's "Memphis Tennessee" The horn work again & that tasty Guitar solo in the second chorus, a real favorite.) "One Kiss" ( always wish this were faster or slower). "Love Me Madly Again" (sort of "lets Screw Again, Like We Did Last Summer", The bumble-bee guitar HAS to be Manzanara. The string & horn outro, A bang up end for side one. "Tokyo Joe" (a free-association, post V.J. Day, Tokyo romp. Trots out all the clichi "Oriental" effects, Gongs, to Pidgin English lyrics. BF is not the only one to confuses Gesha & B-girl. Thank God there's no Kawasaki in this.) "Party Doll" (Where's Fabian? or Leslie Gore? Augie Meyers on the Farfisa?) & "in Your Mind" (great Build-up, sounds like it'll last all week) ALL are better than wonderfull, & I think, vastly under rated.
