Wow, that's DEEP! What is the empirical basis for your trite pop-anthropological pseudo-knowledge? Of course - folks who sympathize with racism might take offense at what I said - 'spose thats bound to happen here and there - not that I'm callin' you a racist, you understand, just makin' a comment that folks with sensitive toes might want to be careful when hittin' the dance floor. >> Wow, that's DEEP! Well - dress up your question in the prettiest terms you have, fill it with sarcasm and scholarly pretensions - it still sounds like you're defending a very ugly point of view ... But if I have to explain to you why racism is so ugly - why its so offensive to demean a group of people just because of their birth, I suspect you won't understand the point anyway. -= )-(eather =- >--------------------< hjames@thewebgal.com My Music Trading Lists: http://www.thewebgal.com/trades/ The Roxy Music Archives: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ >==========================================================< - -----Original Message----- From: owner-avalon@smoe.org [mailto:owner-avalon@smoe.org]On Behalf Of Ronald L. Does anyone have anything I can hear on either Alphaville or Horoscope? I keep hearing of this stuff, but have never heard anything of it. Off list email and lets see what's up for trade that I may have. As for marital strife: I've kept mum on this since the "news" broke. In the last two years I have seen 8 (couples)or more of my husband and I's friends break up. We wondering what we're doing right. We've managed to keep all our friends by staying out of their marital affairs. We have been told by said friends that the bit of hand-holding we did in the tough parts, and the keeping our mouths closed when we had nothing relevant to say was some of the best things we could have done to a couple breaking up. We've even "hidden" from close friends when we didn't want to get dragged into a slanging match. While we are not friends of the Ferrys, I would suggest that we keep our mouths (and fingers) closed. Like yer granny used to say "If you can't say something nice - don't say anything at all". We don't know the whole story - and from my experience - we DON'T want to know the whole story of any long-term relationship breaking down. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Aug 2002 18:47:20 -0700 (PDT) From: David Firmin Subject: [AVALON] Chrissy Iley on Bryan Ferry and Lucy Helmore Scotsman articleSat 24 Aug 2002 Chrissy Iley No one was very comfortable with Bryan Ferry being married to Lucy Helmore, for many reasons. He was the coal-miners son made stylish. She was the daughter of the already stylish Lloyds underwriter, or at least she lived in a world where style came with breeding, a world Bryan is supposed to have aspired to. Rather irritatingly, people banged on for ages about how she shouldnt have married below her station and how he was an upstart for having married above his. How very feudal. Its always cosy when people marry from their same social class, though. Its a shared past, a common denominator. A recent survey showed that those who vote together stay together. But I doubt that class differences can really be cited as the reason for divorce after 20 years. They can, though, seem like a very good reason for getting together. Bryan Ferry grew up in the north-east of England. His parents were poor but aspirational. He might have had an outside lavatory, but he was given high tea with knives and forks while other kids on his street had bread and jam and a wipe. He had the full service. He grew up venting his shyness in stylishness. On Saturdays he worked in a tailors shop, looking through books of wonderful illustrations of gentlemen getting out of Rolls-Royces in fabulous suits. He loved the detail. He still loves that kind of detail now. He went to Newcastle University to study art and was an art teacher before Roxy Music took off. Although full of strange and brooding charisma, he is an unexpected frontman, preferring to think of the rock lifestyle as some kind of artwork - his chords are colours, rhythm is shade; its all about composition. "Suddenly, I found what I was born to do," he said. "It was much more suitable than painting, and yes, you could get all your ideas of form, arrangement and colour into music. I had a lot of stuff waiting to pour out." In the 1970s and the early 80s, he was the most glamorous of rock stars. Then he kind of dried up, puttered off into country life with Lucy. Hed lost his path, his confidence, and was no doubt a misery to live with. He knows that he can be narcissistic and depressive and he seemed to have learned that it was best to have a sense of himself that was amusingly deprecating. Even now, he rarely talks about his split from Jerry Hall. It was a double betrayal; she went off with his friend Mick Jagger. The idea of Jerry Hall had opened Bryan up to a new level. His ego had the ultimate trophy blonde. Perhaps they should get back together again now. But she left him, and Lucy was the balm for all of this. She gave him something solid and nurturing, carpet slippers and a stately home. The fact that hes still twitchy about Jerry means that the rejection struck in a deep place he never wanted to revisit. Or perhaps he is desperate to. Lucy was everything that Jerry Hall was not, and thats another reason people didnt like the idea of it. For a rebound relationship, though, 20 years is not a bad stint. In the beginning, they were hugely in love. He felt, no doubt, that this time he had snared the absolute trophy wife. His sharp sense of style always set him apart as a slick city boy, but country life had long appealed to Bryan - so much so that he used it as the title of a Roxy Music album as far back as 1974. His father grew up tending pit ponies after the depression. Originally, hed been a real country boy who won medals for ploughing. The first thing that Bryan did with his money was buy his parents a better house. Eventually he moved them south to live with him, and there they remained until they died. One acquaintance describes Bryans relationship with Lucy as being one that came with "a pathetic sense of gratitude". She saved him from a very distraught time in his life. He was never short of women. His inamoratas include transsexual singer Amanda Lear and writer Edna OBrien, but he was short of companions because he was such a fish out of water. He called himself an orchid that came from a coal pit. Lucy helped him recover from a drug problem but a decade later, following the death of her father, she turned to drink and eventually sought detox and AA treatment. People say that isolated them further. He liked to chill with a glass of wine in the evening and that irritated her when she was on the wagon. The children, four of them, were sent to public school, Eton and Marlborough. Much is made of that, but he thought he was doing the best for his children. The eldest one left early to go and work for a hunt in North Yorkshire and he and his younger brother became fanatical Countryside Alliance people. Perhaps it was a litmus test of a disturbed, alienated parental situation that they should become obsessed with something so cruel. The younger boy, Isaac, is currently suspended from Eton after sending abusive e-mails to Simon Wild, who runs West Sussex Wildlife Protection group. Bryan had considerable success recently with an impressive Roxy reunion tour. After years of albums that he never felt the urge to finish, his career was back on top form, but the dynamic of the relationship with Lucy had changed. She no longer provided the stability. She was lonely and drifting. Shed appear at Vogue parties and society columns would call her "society beauty Lucy Helmore" and make her sound like an anachronism. Last year, Lucy and Bryan were on a flight to Nairobi when a deranged passenger stormed the cockpit of the plane and it seemed like they were going to be sent plunging to their death. Bryan said, "I cant tell you if it contributed to a newfound sense of clarity, but it was a reminder that life might end at any minute and I needed to push things along a little bit." What he pushed was the limbo of a lonely marriage. He pushed it into disintegration. Lucy only said, "We drifted apart," implying it was a slow, invisible process, when in fact, it was probably a painful, fast plummet, just like that plane. http://news.scotsman.com/features.cfm?id=927132002 *** Yahoo!
