Adrian Dangar | | travelled to Yorkshire to meet him: | | | | | | The first time I met Otis Ferry, he emerged silently from the undergrowth | | shortly after dawn, a tall, spare shape carrying a squirming terrier under | | one arm and a spade beneath the other. He was wearing the countryman's | | working garb of tough leather boots, mud-splattered jeans and a faded | | thornproof coat. The location was a remote corner of rural North | Yorkshire; | | the occasion, an autumn morning with the Middleton Hunt, which the | | 17-year-old had just joined as an amateur whipper-in. | | | | That was nearly two years ago. Since then, Otis has established himself as | | an integral and trusted cog in the hunt's system and - until lately - has | | watched in silent horror as the way of life he loves has slid ever closer | to | | extinction. | | | | Then, a few weeks ago, he decided to give the cause a helping hand with a | PR | | initiative of his own. His arrest, late at night within the grounds of the | | Prime Minister's house in Trimden, Co Durham - coupled with his undeniably | | glamorous background (his father is the singer Bryan Ferry) - has thrust | | this aspirant huntsman into the spotlight. When we met again last week, he | | recounted the details of his solitary mission and the anger and | frustration | | that lay behind it. | | | | "I feel strongly that, during this so-called 'consultation' into hunting, | | the more disruption is made by people showing their true feelings of | anger, | | the more likely the Government is to take their concerns on board," he | says. | | "It's no good acting after the issue has been decided. | | | | "I saw it caused a stir when the York MP Hugh Bailey's office was | plastered | | with pro-hunting stickers. So I thought that if I gave Blair's house | similar | | treatment, that would also make the news." | | | | He spent more than an hour wandering streets broken with potholes and | lined | | with for sale boards in Trimden - "a ghost town" - in his hunt for the | Prime | | Minister's constituency residence. Eventually, an electric gate swung open | | to reveal shining new tarmac and he knew his search was over. Perhaps | | naively, he had not anticipated being caught in the act. | | | | "I suddenly heard a camera whirring, but I kept walking, looking for a | good | | place to put my stickers. When I got to a second gate and that one didn't | | open, I began to feel a bit uneasy and, when I turned around, I found | myself | | confronted by two security guards with guns levelled at me. | | | | "I could have nipped over the fence and escaped if I had really wanted to, | | but I didn't think it was worth a bullet in the leg. I hadn't done | anything | | wrong." | | | | When the police searched Otis's rucksack, they found dozens of pro-hunting | | stickers. Their owner at first refused to reveal his name. "That was when | | they told me I was being detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, | | which seemed to me to be pretty serious," he says. "At 2am, I was taken to | | Newton Aycliffe police station, where that charge was then dropped. But I | | have been bailed to report back there in a month's time." | | | | Roundabouts and motorway bridges all over northern England have been | daubed | | with pro-hunting graffiti this summer and Otis is hoping he will not be | | blamed for unsolved crimes of that sort. "I am a bit worried they will now | | try to pin everything on me," he says. | | | | The arrest was widely reported in that weekend's papers. The resultant | | publicity has been rivalled in this summer of discontent only by Millie | | Jackson's topless ride through the streets of London in April. Otis's | | initial regrets about being caught and any embarrassment he may have | caused | | his family have been dispelled by a deluge of supportive messages from all | | over the country. | | | | "Countless people have telephoned and written offering help and | | congratulations - many I have never even met," he says. "Four guys came up | | to me in the pub last night and promised to do worse. They are young | farmers | | who don't hunt themselves, but love the way of life and all that goes with | | it. They believe not enough is being done and are up for making a serious | | stand. | | | | "I now realise how much enthusiasm there is from young people for more | | action. They are sick to death of being threatened by aliens in | | Westminster." | | | | We meet at Otis's rented bungalow on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, | where | | there are stunning views across old pasture-land to the Vale of York, hazy | | in the late-evening sunshine. "Sorry about the mess," he says, as I walk | in. | | Piles of crumpled clothing lie scattered about the floor and a puddle of | | spilt milk seeps from the rusty fridge. "The police turned this place | upside | | down while I was locked up overnight and I haven't had time to tidy up | yet." | | | | The raid on his house may have surprised Otis, but he is clearly unruffled | | by the intrusion, and I suspect the interior was hardly up to Ideal Home | | standards before the police visit. They cannot be blamed for the thick | grey | | cobwebs at the corners of the windows, the gaping hole in the living-room | | ceiling or the kitchen sink full of dirty cutlery. | | | | ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Aug 2002 12:04:26 -0400 From: "Theresa Fagan" Subject: [AVALON] Otis Interview PART 1B Apparently, the lack of creature comforts does not deter Otis's mother, | | Lucy, from staying with him when she visits from the family home in Sussex | | to hunt across the Middleton countryside. A puzzled hunt subscriber told | me: | | "She could have the pick of all the grand houses in Yorkshire when she | comes | | up here, but she prefers to stay with Otis in his smelly bungalow." Lucy | has | | been quoted in the press as confirming rumours of a possible rift in her | | marriage, which is sure to fuel speculation over a move north - although | it | | is hard to imagine her living beyond striking distance of the capital. | | | | According to Otis's boss, Frank Houghton-Brown, the master of the | Middleton | | hunt, the state of his whipper-in's house is all to do with his devotion | to | | duty. "He works incredibly hard and spends very little time at home. He's | | very dedicated." Otis goes further, pointing out that his bedroom windows | | are permanently obscured by thick blankets. "I'm never here during | daylight | | hours, so why bother opening them?" he says. | | | | There is little sign that any cooking ever takes place in the kitchen, | | either, although one suspects he will not waste the 90 rashers of bacon | left | | on the table by a farming friend. That was just one of many acts of | kindness | | from a community more impressed by his commitment to their hunt than his | | exotic rock star pedigree. | | | | I feel I must probe his social life. After all, his father said in a | recent | | interview that not only were women still big supporters of his concerts | but | | also they are getting younger. My suggestion that the unusual blend of | music | | business street cred with the glamour of a career in hunting must be | | irresistible to the opposite sex is shrugged off with a throwaway line | about | | being too busy for all that sort of thing. | | | | Further quizzing reveals a girlfriend - described as "doe-eyed and | gorgeous" | | by a contemporary - who just happens to be the hunting daughter of a local | | farmer. "One thing is for sure," jokes Otis before we leave the subject, | "if | | a chick can stick the state of my house, I know she must really like me." | | | | Otis Ferry traces his enthusiasm for the chase back to early childhood | | holidays on the west coast of Ireland, where he was encouraged to fish, | | shoot and work his lurcher dog in pursuit of rabbits. Back home in Sussex, | | he was soon catching more foxes with his own scratch pack of terriers and | | lurchers than were caught by the local hunt - although he claims that | there | | were so many living in suburbia that the local master was delighted to | have | | assistance in thinning them out. | | | | After gaining an impressive clutch of GCSEs at Marlborough, Otis decided | his | | future lay with hunting, rather than a return to academic education. He | | spent that winter with the Irish horse dealer, Henry Gordon, where he | hunted | | with the Galway Blazers and survived on a diet of bread and cheese. | | | | Ferry credits the Irish horseman with refining his riding skills, without | | which he would not be where he is today. "Henry made it obvious to me that | | riding was the missing link in my life," he says. "I realised that, when | you | | can ride half-decently, everything I loved - such as working dogs and | being | | out in the open countryside - all fell into place under the umbrella of | | foxhunting." | | | | His breakthrough into the English hunting scene came the following season, | | when one of his mother's hunting friends suggested he contact the | Middleton | | Hunt, which takes on school-leavers for work experience. He describes his | | present life of early mornings in kennels, long hours in the saddle and | | hunting up to four times a week with real passion and a focus unusual in | one | | so young. | | | | (continued) | ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html US ticket sale info: http://www.thewebgal.com/roxymusic/ (updated weekly) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Aug 2002 12:00:21 -0500 From: Karen S Subject: Re: [AVALON] False rumours Has anyone uploaded the Daily Mail article so those of us unable to buy UK pubs can form our own opinions? Go to www.fontfreak.com and look at "Karloff", "Manson Nights", and "Zombie" or go to www.a1fonts.com and look at "Brush Stroke". There are dozens of other links that may come up with something closer, but if you decide to follow any of the suggested links, be sure to run your "pop-up killer" software because....DAAAAMN!!!!!
