Such a shame that there's such an air of disappointment on the site when last year there was a palpable buzz. Does anyone have any inside info as to why Bryan seems so keen to stick with the old set-list and abbreviated format? We can't see into someone else's mind but most of us, surely, if we had a good little band, a great back catalogue and a world tour arranged, would want to surprise the audience and interest ourselves by mixing it up. I can't believe that they just can't be bothered to learn some more songs. After Edinburgh and Liverpool I'm not looking forward to the remaining 6 gigs I was rash enough to book for. They're just getting boring! So here's my recipe for a revival of excitement on the site and in the venues.........swap the mouldy old set for the following: The In-Crowd Baby I Don't Care It's My Party Piece of My Heart Sentimental Fool Beauty Queen Strictly Confidential Grey Lagoons All I Want Is You Amazona Prairie Rose Love Me Madly Again Limbo Your Painted Smile 2HB Bitters End (Encores) Serenade Sunset What do you think? Anyone agree? You never know, Bryan may read this and surprise us! Well, now that I know the Ferrys truly are activists, I will have to be less sympathetic when they are attacked by activists. They're in the game. They know how it works. I`m probably way off here, but I do recall a similar incident concerning Ian Hunter some years ago as he toured with a new album. As I remember it from a now defunct Mott mail list, Hunter was so fed up with all of the audience recordings that popped up after the first few gigs that he pretty much dropped all of the new material for the rest of that tour. On "For Your Pleasure"(the track!) the voice at the end that says "Don't ask why" is apparently Dame Judi Dench - can anyone confirm this?! 2. I have live recording's of "Virginia Plain","Chance Meeting" and "ReMake/Remodel" from 1972 listed as BBC live. Anyone know the date or the venue(think they may be Paris theatre,London or Golders Green Hippodrome! - if Simon Galloway is out there, I think u may know the answers to both questions!) 'both ends burning', for example, was *SO* uptempo i was sure the band had a plane to catch as soon as the number ended. truly, truly _bizarre_. what IS going on after all??? in spite of all of this ... i'm feeling quite incredulous that ferry & co. will be playing my hometown here in ann arbor, mi. the acoustics might be better, but i was actually hoping he'd play the fox theatre in detroit once again (or the opera house). but - you won't catch me complaining about that aspect of the tour. god, i could _walk_ to the show if i had to ...! peaces/ms ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Aug 2002 19:30:08 -0500 From: "Paula Brown" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Reflections......... So here goes: I love this song! OK, now that that's out of the way. When I heard the Ferry and Eno had written a song together for this album, my first reaction was something akin to dread. I did not like what Mr. Eno had done to the tracks he'd dabbled in on _Mamouna_, and I was expecting more of the same. Was I ever wrong! I like _Frantic_ quite a bit (and still--I put it on today and am still enjoying it), and I think there are a few very fine songs on it. But none of them come close to "I Thought". What I like best about it, at least for right now, is the depth of sound it has. It's quite a shock, after hearing the layers of the previous songs, to realize how sonically (well, at least for starters) shallow they are in comparison to "I Thought." It's as if all of the walls have been moved back. It's really stunning. Christian wrote: > Well, that would be four guitars at least. Colin Good contributes his > finest piano work on 'Frantic' (assuming the piano was played by him), The booklet credits Ferry, Eno, and Good, but everything about it--the harmonics, the rhythm, the feeling behind it--hint to me that it isn't Mr. Good on that piano line. I love the lyrics too. Too often as of late Mr. Ferry's lyrics are mere fluff, something you could create by going to the Random Poetry Generator. On "I Thought" it seems as if he is making the effort, and to great effect. They're dark and sad without being maudlin or forced, and I especially like the rueful verse: > I thought > I'd find you walking in the rain > Just like a wayward child > I thought > I'd find you calling out my name especially the way he phrases > So foolish is my pride This hopefulness tinged with, and then turned to, heartbreak gets me every time. Every time. Someone once wrote something along the lines that Ferry is the poster child for unrequited love. I think he's written his masterpiece in that genre with "I Thought."
