When I fork out cash for a concert ticket Mark I expect a certain quantity and quality for my cash. In Edinburgh on July 1st the set was ok for content, but suffered on quality because of the fact that songs are being played way too fast. Having listened to recordings of other shows I'm glad that I didn't put out the extra cash to attend as not only has the content shrunk, but the quality has not risen either, in fact I would say that in some cases it has declined. As I've been away on holiday for most of the last two weeks I've yet to hear how things have gone during that time period show wise, but I doubt very much if there has been much of a change especially as the songs played throughout the Roxy tour were also played too quickly to the point where "Dreamhome" was a mere shadow of what it was originally. How can I make financial equations on shows, very easily as money is hard to come by and as there are more wants than available cash one has to make a decision based on whether or not something would be worth the money or what the alternative purchase would be that would be missed out on. In the end it's a very normal equation that most people face every day due to the financial restrictions they face in life Tom. I am amazed myself that it would cross my mind not to bother, but now he seems to tour every half an hour the thrill, the anticipation I used to feel has begun to wear off. I'm sure that in the end I WILL go, but I doesn't excite me as much as I would hope. A brand new album represented hardly at all, and yet another trot through the same old songs... After three years spent in good part on the road, I'm worried that a performer who has always admitted he doesn't like live performing much, is inevitably going to be doing it in his sleep. But I shouldn't prejudge, of course! I should keep an open mind... A good reminder so that I don't book any flights too soon. Anyone care to speculate if this year's concert could be cancelled? Bottom line: don't book and flights or hotels for awhile! Von Neumann analysis confirmed this[5,6] but matrix stability analysis[7,8] showed that this was not true: in the case of a time-dependent Robin boundary condition being applied (Butler-Volmer kinetics at the electrode and with potential changed over time, e.g. CV or LSV) and a large dt, instability could occur. However, Bieniasz and co-workers found that it was extremely difficult to observe the instability in practice.[7]" -- Sir James (Blah, blah, blah - M's interpretation) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ironing and Star Trek, a perfect afternoon. For those of you who haven't visited The Eternal City, it is a must. Everyone had primed me for the beauty of Rome but the scale and the grandeur of the place simply takes your breath away. The venue had been changed some time ago away from a purpose built tennis arena to a quaint little amphitheatre in the shadow of The National Modern Art Museum in the Villa Borghese. I'm sure in the golden light of a Roman evening it could look very becoming, but July 30th heralded a break in the sweltering rain free days and delivered us an electrical storm only the Romans could conjure up - massively dramatic and over the top with horizontal fork lightening illuminating the skies like the more expensive firework display that followed the Edinburgh gig. Subsequently the concrete tired venue cascaded with flood water and soaked the makeshift seating, making the whole venue look rather like a sad Italian toilet. We moved gradually from sheltering under massive pine trees (after remembering our basic physics of them acting as superb lightening conductors) to a safer shelter of a metal telephone box (are we mad?!) to the ultimate safety of the travelling sandwich van outside the venue. Then donning very stylish plastic bags worn at a jaunty angle not dissimilar to the way Mr F carries off a flat cap, we elected to take our chances in the venue. Soon we all looked like contestants for a Miss/Mr wet t-shirt competition. Eventually, the stage was dried off sufficiently for the evening's entertainment to begin. The PA belted out Bond standards and the theme tune to the Persuaders and then the band took to the stage. Within a few seconds it was evident that either Bryan's mike had packed up or there was something seriously up with his throat. It turned out to be the latter. He struggled on bravely and the set was twisted somewhat to accommodate his failing vocals. My Only Love dropped back in from the Roxy tour, gave him a chance to doodle on keyboards while Sarah did her thing, and Colin Good took over much of the high register vocals throughout much of the set. I have to say that Ferry's rendition of Don't Think Twice was brilliantly done with his lower register, and begged the opportunity for him to sinisterly talk his way through The Bogus Man - but that wasn't to be. Even Good Night Irene seemed to work under these difficult circumstances. The rest of the set was pretty much a speeded up bog standard romp through the standards. My other half who hasn't seen any of the tour so far, thought it worked well and wasn't as aware of Ferry's distress as the rest of us. Certainly the band thought it had gone OK afterwards , so the effort was worthwhile. Personally I though Ferry's voice sounded so poorly that they must have been very close to cancelling the gig. I have sometimes wondered what you do under these circumstances. If we're ill, we just phone in sick, but if the show must go on and you're a singer, you're pretty much stuffed. Could be worse, you could be a trapeze artist. But at least it reignited my interest in the very, very low register of Ferry's voice which we sometimes forget is incredibly low (think I'll drag out Casanova when I get home). Only one more gig to go before the guys have a month off, and I had to remind Paul it was in Lucca. "What lucca here, or lucca ower there?" says the Geordie drum machine. And then off we went into the Italian night to celebrate what was left of my Roman birthday. It was great to meet Cecilia and her sister, mad man Danilo, Lisa, Andrea, Bahi and Bobo. They all helped to make it a special, hugely entertaining evening. And now I can't wait to go back to Rome again, with or without a Ferry concert. These guys are very lucky to be able shorten (I know some lenthen, but not Ferry) their sets at will. It is very dissapointing to go to a show which has featured your favourite song from their latest opus, only to find it dropped (as would be the case if I had been to a show which had not featured "A Fool For Love". These people would never get away with it, say if they were performing Hamlet, I can hear it now as they wait in the wings. Bryan Ferry's son held at Blair's home By Laura Peek BRYAN FERRYbS 19-year-old son was arrested by armed police outside Tony Blairb s constituency home in the middle of the night where he was intending to pin up pro-hunting posters. Otis Ferry, who works for a hunt in Yorkshire and is an outspoken hunt supporter, approached the Prime Ministerbs house at Sedgefield, Co Durham, in a hooded top. He was carrying a bundle of Countryside Alliance pro-hunting posters. Mr Ferry was challenged by two police protection officers after passing through the security gates at 4am on Wednesday. He was arrested after he refused to give his name. Mr Ferry, who was educated at Marlborough College, was taken to a police station for questioning but released without charge. He said yesterday: bI had seen on the news that pro-hunting protesters had been targeting MPsb homes and thought you couldnbt get better than Tony Blair bs home. I found out where he lived and drove there, not expecting to be arrested. There were no keep out signs and the gates opened when I walked up to them.b He said that he turned to leave when he heard surveillance equipment, and it was then that he saw the police. bI am annoyed with myself for getting caught. It was stupid,b he said. Mr Ferry was later re-arrested on an unconnected charge of alleged criminal damage in East Riding, Yorkshire, last May. Inspector Julie Davies of Humberside Police, said: bWe can confirm that the arrest by Humberside Police has no connection with the incident outside Mr Blairbs home nor any other politician.b Mr Ferry, whose father is the former lead singer of Roxy Music, joined the Middleton Hunt in Yorkshire two years ago as the second whipper-in, looking after 100 hounds. He said yesterday that he was passionate about hunting. Former??? Sad that he's STILL passionate about hunting, though...
