I've seen Stranglers live at Wembley 1979 and interviewed one of them, the drummer Jet Black in 1984, he was then 45 or so. I read the article in the latest Mojo and I like them too. I used don't associate their name with Bryan Ferry, David Bowie, Brian Eno and Pet Shop Boys. Aformerco-worker of mine has a Stranglers tatoo and met her boyfriend through The Monochrome set. No numberes seats. Gates supposed to open at 19. Opened at 20.30 Show supposed to start at 21.15. Hard rain from 18.45 till 21.15. (venue openair, no place to repair) Show started at 22.15 after hard stage-drying. Ended at 23.30. Bryan very low on voice. Had sore throat. Admitted it from the stage trying to avoid the last two songs (but finally did them anyway). Small venue. Maybe 800 people attending the concerts. Everybody sitting all the time except for the last 3 songs. Bryan and expecially Paul saw and waved us from the stage (we were sitting 2nd row quite central and were the only ones to sing and somehow dance). Thanks Jocelyn we managed to meet Paul (and Chris) backstage, Bryan had already gone cause he didn't feel good. Some pictures will follow. Maybe someone else wants to add something. Just got back and I've been catching up on all the posts.I was interested to read the opinions on Bowie's lyrics as only a couple of months ago my son told me that he had been studying him as part of his music lesson! The teacher tore up newspapers and the pupils had to re-assemble them to form lyrics. Tom couldn't come up with anything much but he did enjoy playing ' Ashes to Ashes' on the keyboard! It's all a far cry from 'Dashing away with the smoothing iron'( which is the only thing I can remember from my music lessons)! Other artists studied were Bill Hayley and The Beatles. No it's not the most complex piece of music written or the deepest lyric, but it was a trully great single and the one I play most of all. I thought it was a great shame that it wasn't give an outing on the Roxy tour, then again maybe Ferry just hasn't got the energy to perform something like this any more.
