I firmly believe that there is a way to disagree with someone on a music mailing list during a discussion about music without resorting to name-calling and personal attacks? Or, if one can't find a way to do so, to use personal email instead of the list to flame someone. Personally, when a discussion about something impersonal turns personal it's a clear sign to me that the other person doesn't have the ability to respond to the substance of my argument, and therefore, as the the conversation is then no longer about music, it should go off-list. I'm trying very hard to keep the list focused on music and to keep the things that drive folks off the list or keep interesting people from posting--name-calling, personal attacks, lots of irrelevant topics, etc.--off-list. I'd appreciate your help with this. I have NO specific information relating to his health! I only wished to suggest that there may be hidden factors that made changes necessary - I chose 'health' as the example because it would have impact and well illustrate the point I was trying to make. The point was, we will never know or understand why Mr. Ferry has made the various choices that he has made throughout his lifetime - the very choices that make him what he is today, and what he will become. I am sorry if I have alarmed you or any others. Again, to my knowledge, Bryan Ferry is in good health. Best wishes. Hello, I recently came accross some new/old Roxy Music shows: Tivoli, Copenhagen Denmark, Jan. 25, 1976 1cd12 songs, B sound.59+ min. Flesh+Blood Live: Gothenburg June 10, 1980 1cd 16 songs 79:55 fades out during "8 Miles High" seems whoever transferred this just let the tape run til it ran out of cd time probably missing 2 or 3 songs good B+ sound not as good as the remastered italy show but some slightly different versions than later shows of the tour. Flesh+Blood does not have the longer intro and the keyboards are better heard here and the drumming is great. The set has 2 differences: Casanova and to my surprise the disco version of "Angel Eyes" which seems to turn into a jam for the last 3min. I like this show and could"Strimpldisc" it if there is enough response for this. Vancouver, May 9, 1983 2cd B+ sometimes gets distant sounding. Better than the calfornia avalon show. "The Great Paul Thompson" Tokyo Sept. 9 2001 2cd a little below the sound of "Sayonara Moon" Hammesmith Apollo, Oct. 1, 2001 Have not confirmed if this is same source as "Encore" Instruments are strong but the vocals seem flat and get lost on a couple occasions. a strong B+ not bad at all During "South Downs" someone taking their seat says"Bryan always waits for us" at the 45sec mark. Is this on the "Encore" show? Hammersmith Apollo, Oct 2, 2001 Same as above vocals a little better. A-? Let me know the interest of any of these and I can do some "Strimpldisc"ing..... Personally, >when a discussion about something impersonal turns personal it's a clear >sign to me that the other person doesn't have the ability to respond to >the substance of my argument, > It seems to me there shouldn't be any difficulty achieving this. A music discussion list like this exists because a) we like the artist very much, or at least some of his work very much and b) we want to talk about him, and related topics. 'Discussion' does not mean 'argument', but the best discussions will include disagreement, sometimes strong disagreement. People can, and should, make their views known unflinchingly, and others can respond to it equally unflinchingly. Thus I can, if I wish, say that I think David Bowie a poor musician if I then try and say why. ( I don't think this, and didn't say it. I merely disputed Simon's assertion that his wide influence was a 'fait accompli' demonstration of his excellence.) Simon G. can come back and say why he thinks I'm wrong. Nothing problematic with any of this. What I can't say - and wouldn't want to say - is that I think David Bowie is a poor musician, and if you disagree you must be a real git who should burn in hell. See the difference? it's not that hard. I've been on this list for four years, and never on any other. ( The internet isn't that big a thing in my life.) The only thing I have on occasion disliked about it is that virtually every decent contributor has at one time or other been the victim of a personal attack like the one I had. And, perhaps two years ago the list lost a couple of excellent people because they could no longer stand it. One final note, because not everyone is aware of this. Most computers have some sort of 'automatic delete' function, so that if a particular list contributor offends you, you can ensure that everything with their name on it, either on AVALON or privately, gets junked; then they can scream at you in limbo. Bowie is a poor musician, but a great writer and entertainer. A Robbie Williams for the 70's. Bowie did a run of great albums in the 70's, I stopped liking him after Let's Dance when he became an impostor of himself. I have yet to hear the new album, but I will. Another question, retoric that is, do I believe in hell? Hmm. my wife who has a master in divinity and I have not yet reached a final decision on that. But as Neil Gaiman's Sandman puts it visiting hell, if those there could not dream of heaven, where would they be? But heaven is boring--the band is always playing one's favorite song. On the other hand if I could expand that to playing What's Going On over and over, well I would be like my current life. >One final note, because not everyone is aware of this. In some way, it almost seems to be the 'forgotten' Roxy single, and I don't know why. Seldom heard, seldom talked about, seldom played 'live' (though it really should have been on last years tour, don't ya think ?). Come to think of it, as Bry solo performs Roxy songs too, why not stick it on the current BF tour then instead - PLEASE - (along with In Crowd, This Is Tomorrow, Tokyo Joe, Love Me Madly Again, Price Of Love, et al... instead of lazy constant bloody rehashes of songs from the last couple of tours... Sorry, I rant and digress). Oh, and Remake/Remodel play it brilliantly 'live', naturally. A real powerhouse of a song, and a much underrated Single. >> lyrics/music>> This was back when Ferry could run off simple, great, effective lyrics at the drop of a hat. How I miss that. Sometimes the simplest things/emotions are the most powerful. I love the middle of the song, when Manzo takes centre stage. And who can resist 'L'Amour, Toujours, L'Amour'... It also contains one of Roxy's best intros, and outros too, come to think of it. What a great ending. >>it changed my life>> I wouldn't go that far, but it certainly reaffirmed my unshakable belief that Roxy were clearly the best Band on the planet at that particular moment. No-one was ever completely sure what sort of song would be released next, particularly with BFs very different style solo work running concurrently, during those times. >>the video (if any)>> Ok, bit of an explanation on this one. Not a video as such, but the Top Of The Pops TV appearance - and I remember the events leading up to it like it was only yesterday. A Thursday night, in Glasgow, Scotland, Autumn 1974. I am a very happy 16 year old, as I'd just got the new Roxy single a day early from a friend who worked in Glorias Record Bar (local cool wee place). Singles were normally released on a Friday at that time. I'm sitting down about a foot from the TV, ready for Top Of The Pops. I didn't expect Roxy to be on, as the single wasn't officially released until the next day. Besides, TOTP at that time only usually played songs already out, and in the current Top 30, so I reckoned I had another week to wait before Roxy would be appearing. Then I saw it ! At the very corner of the screen, whilst another act was on, (can't remember who, but does it matter ?) I suddenly spied the 'RM' logo on the front of TGPTs kit, in the background. I went into overdrive, much to the annoyance of my parents, phoning all my schoolfriends one after another with an excited short 3 word message for every one of them... "Roxy are on" ! "Roxy are on" ! And then there they were, up next. No longer the Ferry from tuxedo lounge lizardsville of the previous months, but in a t-shirt and jeans. Cool. Surprised at the time seeing John Wetton there, miming the backing vocals (badly !). Great appearance though, happily one which we've all since seen, as it was spared being scrubbed from the old TOTP archives (a terrible fate which fell upon both Street Life and the infamous 'Ferry with guitar' Pyjamarama appearance, I'm afraid). No VCRs back then, but in a way I didn't need one, as the whole appearance was burned into my memory, a fact proved to me when I saw it once again a few years ago. It was exactly as I had remembered it. Brilliant. I remember the real thrill of it all (sorry) - a similar feeling washed over me in those minutes leading up to the Dublin gig last year. I'm so glad I never lost that feeling, 28 years later. It was only Roxy Music who could do that to me. >>that reminds me...>> I eventually bought 3 copies of the Single. Two for me (in case one got damaged, of course !) and another one for Heather Alexander, who I was hopelessly in love with at the time. I had a real hard time convincing her that Roxy were a zillion times better than Sweet. Hey, true love never runs smoothly at 16, you know ? And has it ever been properly explained who says 'Yeah !" at the very end ? Reecey... PS I tried, but I just couldn't join in the recent SOTW discussion of 'One Way Love'. There wouldn't have been enough mb spare on the net to handle my vitriol. Yahoo!
