On the other hand, I suppose the same set list every night does ensure a kind of audience equity. > Why does Neil Finn have "the advantage over Mr. Ferry in that he can go > for hours with only...a piano"? See, this is a theory I shared with another Avalonian last week: that this jaunt of the festival circuit might be a way for all of them to learn some new songs without having to pay for rehearsal space and time. Or maybe not. It was low key, the crowd didn't look that big and it was miles from the castle. The set list and performance were uninspiring as well although I agree with Jocelyn that this may have been due to the lack of atmosphere. I've been to Petworth and Castle Howard as well as several indoor shows. This was not good. Everything seems to be in place but I thought (to coin a phrase) there was a lack of desire, a lack of spark, even dare I say a lack of emotion in the performance. Very polished but no effort. I guess he's geting on now and we're lucky to have him still performing so frequently but i left thinking I'd seen it all before done better. And please stop speeding up the songs - Baby Blue was over before it had started. If Chris Turner, John O'Brien and / or others who are in contact with Ferry's management read this PLEASE consider the roped off dance area in front of the stage for these concerts. It worked at Petworth, it worked at Castle Howard and it gets the real fans down the front generating an atmosphere unhampered by people who've brought their bloody 3 piece suite and tele with them. This quite powerful and up tempo set needs a standing audience. it's the first time my girlfriend has seen him live - she thought he was "brilliant". I was left wishing she'd seen how good he can really be. Fingers crossed for the Albert Hall. Its melody is eerie. Ferry's voice slightly ethereal. Its lyric may be interpreted in various ways. For me, it is also a 'strange' thing, as I have previously written, listening to NSD always reminds me of Billy Holiday's "Strange Fruit", and the similarity between the song titles is not why NSD calls to mind SF! I've wondered if the connection I've made between these two songs is in the vein. Billy Holiday suffered heroine addiction, "No Strange Delight" smacks of it, and its ramifications! To wit: (Yes, roll your eyes, this is a bit out there - for you, anyway :) "so there goes your life disappeared from ever loving friends and now a slave to obsession your strange delight you lie awake how your senses ache shaking off the night is there more strange delight?" In the vernacular becomes - 'Your life changes forever as you become addicted to (your choice of drug). Your friends no longer know or understand who you are. You become isolated, alone with your habit. Late into the night you cannot sleep, your body rebels - it needs more to stave off withdrawal. Need a quick fix - strange delight.' "there goes your self in the clear forever out of line and there you'll stray through obsession your strange delight can't bear this heat your poor heart skips a beat tearing off the years to when you really cared" 'You are lost to everything of the world, nothing matters - you are out of step with society - in line with everything wasting. Your life solely focused on where, when and how you'll maintain your addiction. At some point of reflection you realize there was a time, once ago, when you did cared about living life. You are overwhelmed by this obsession - your strange delight.' "so where's your soul? in the field where every story ends and then how plain your obsession your strange delight so this is hell not so hard to tell better men than I have tried your strange delight is there no strange delight?" 'So this is now your pathetic life - a resident fit for the landfill, your body, mind and soul - your very essence, trashed. Nothing glorious to that. This is living hell - a private hell. One that is populated by other people, all together all alone, who have fooled around and fell in love with a dangerous beauty queen who was not and who was but an illusion - no strange delight.' The moral of the story: "Just say 'No'"! I consider "No Strand Delight" to be a public service announcement by Bryan Ferry, and to be amongst the best ever produced in the 'war against drugs'. Best wishes. After all Ferry has stated that he greatly enjoys when the audience is into the show - since the front of the venue is what the band sees and hears, well, it is only natural that dancing fans would warm the atmosphere considerably. Burrrrr, sounds like the Merryweather show last year - Ferry just seemed lackluster and not into it. I shudder to think..... Lazy Ass Bryan: No More Live Performances by M England - A riot broke out at a recent Bryan Ferry concert, when fans were shocked to discover that they were not watching their beloved idol onstage. A sudden gust of wind swept through the outdoor venue, causing what fans thought was Mr. Ferry, to fall to the ground. It was revealed that a life-size cardboard cutout of the singer had been placed onstage at the last two concerts while a "live" recording was played. The musicians pretended that they were playing their instruments and even pretended to banter with the cardboard Mr. Ferry, taking care not to knock him over. Pandemonium ensued and police were quickly brought to the scene to restrain outraged fans. No ticket refunds were offered. "I thought he looked less animated," stated one fan. "Now we know why. His arthritis couldn't have gotten that bad." "First, a shrinking set list and now this," complained another fan. "Why does he bother anymore? The lazy rat bastard should just retire. I would have been better off watching a live video at home." The future of Mr. Ferry's tour to promote his album Frantic is uncertain and Mr. Ferry and his management could not be reached for comment ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V7 #246 **************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
