Now Colleen knows I admire her thinking and also share her love of Neil Finn, so I feel able to tread here quite happily without causing offence. Ahem. Firstly, I saw NF that same night in February (though I could swear it was February last year) and he was inspired and inspiring. I'm just back from Montreux seeing Bowie who is, let's face it, months rather than years (plural) Bryan Ferry's junior and he managed to play a blistering set in an overly warm venue before an ecstatic crowd for two hours, playing hits and Heathen tracks including a four-track encore. After a five-minute wait amid rapturous applause, Bowie came back on and announced they would now play the WHOLE of the Low album. I could go on (and on) about how great these 2002 Bowie shows have been, but this is the Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music newsgroup, no? My points would be these (I wish my mind was as organised as the beginning of my sentences would suggest): Why does Neil Finn have "the advantage over Mr. Ferry in that he can go for hours with only...a piano"? Bryan Ferry can play piano. He writes his own songs as well as covering other people's. He can play piano. And sing. And he can play piano. Why can't he be more spontaneous, especially when espousing the blues/folk music that decorates the frantic album? Also, why does Bryan lack the energy to put himself out on a planned basis, rather than relying on spontaneity? Bowie didn't just think "Let's play Low, we haven't done that in a while". The band had the music rehearsed. It was there to call upon. Bryan Ferry is using half (if not more) of the Roxy line-up from last year, so there's plenty more to call upon (BUT let's NOT advocate even more Roxy content!). This line-up is more than capable of playing a few extra songs, even if it means learning them on the tour bus. I've love Roxy and Ferry since day one (or the day I first heard Virginia Plain anyhow), but the latest dates have been flaccid and lazy. Best wishes Richard Mills n/p David Bowie ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Jul 2002 09:02:20 -0400 From: "paul pavlock" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Re: Now Playing I want o know what everyone is listening to. BROKEN HEARTS by Manuel Hidalgo You went dressed to kill and guess who's dying? The fragrant aroma of the air on the Count Duke Patio was met with the smoothness of Bryan Ferry who with long arms and long hands took from the sky with his fingers the sad fruits of lack of affection. You went dressed to kill and guess who's dying? The songs of the son of the miner, the aristocrat of the soul. His songs always bring the melancholia of a painful memory, worthy of defeat, with the repetitive note of a spirit broken by the loss of love. Fans of Ferry took on the rhythm of the songs and began to move their feet timidly and then their entire bodies as if against everything foretold, to surpass a sweet invading discouragement. We heard the nocturnal waves of the Sea of Tara, for example, which brought the lukewarm foam on which the rest floats shipwrecked. Ferry is not cold nor is his music cold. In concert he simply celebrates a ritual of evocative debilitation and conveys the fatigue of a broken heart. The three singers were beautifully splendid in their white masculine suits and sounded elegant with minimal movement as they supported Ferry, the impeccable dandy, dressed in black and white. Enter the musicians ...the amiable Lucy Wilkins, violinist; the beautiful Julia Thornton, percussionist...a sentence re. Julia's red camisole. A paragraph about Ferry/Hall/Jagger that I didn't bother to translate. There were extraordinary moments in the unique hour and a quarter session. There were the favorite songs, but there was not a single moment of boredom. The structure was perfect, with alternating enthusiastic summits and languid valleys, but do not forget, always mediated by that line of quiet privacy that distinguishes the work of a master. A paragraph about Jealous Guy, Va Plain and Love Is The Drug. There is a piece that is my favorite for personal reasons -- Limbo -- that was not sung the other night in the Count Duke. No hard feelings for the omission. The nostalgia is not the nostalgia of the past. Whether remembering Roxy Music or Bob Dylan, with Bryan Ferry it is nostalgia in a pure state. I will touch on the harmonica and whistling. You went dressed to kill and guess who's dying? It is necessary to die whistling. Now isn't that review wonderfully romatic? Si, let's all go to Madrid! The lyrics "tearing back the years to when you really cared" (the lyric sheet is wrong -- it's "back," not "off") and "So where's your soul/in the field where every story ends" are some of my favorites. I think it is Ferry's most brutally honest monument to obsession and is one of the reasons he is my hero.
