( Longish post) Dear Thom: I certainly understand your concerns as expressed. Admittedly, I too am a bit ambivalent about what 'appears' to be happening. Since I am in America, I will be happy to attend any local show by Ferry, but as much as I love his work and respect his talent I have always maintained an "It's just not that important to me to have to see him live" attitude. However, the case for you and your fellow Islanders is very different. You have been in the enviable position to pick and choose from numerous concert dates of which any were reasonably expected to satisfy attendees. - That is, until now. I suspect the summer of our discontent is really due to our wanting something bright, totally original and exciting from Mr. Ferry, but what we got isn't so. Perhaps we should lower our expectations of this artist? After all, it is a long way down when one had started at the top of one's game. Please do not to be too discouraged, I know that feeling and I've been fighting it for sometime. Things like the following have frustrated many a fan for many a year. This is an excerpt from an article from the Toronto Sun on October 17, 1999: [ Ferry is talking about a new album of original material to follow As Time Goes By, he hopes by next September. "I was working with (former Roxy Music member) Brian Eno and (Eurythmics) Dave Stewart and (Radiohead guitarist) Johnny Greenwood and Marcus Miller," he continues. "There's all sorts of things there, I mean, quite a lot of material, and I think I was writing too many songs really, so I got in a bit of a fluster and decided to do this album." ]. Let's try to 'keep the faith'. - Perhaps the Old Boy will pleasantly surprise us! Best wishes to all, and to those whom I owe personal correspondence, I'll be catching up over the next few days. ( Longish post) What I want to know is this: is Mr. Ferry enjoying himself on stage? And does that have any impact on the setlist? Would he enjoy himself more if it featured different songs? Was it a mistake for him to go out on tour again so close on the heels of the Roxy tour, his interview comments re: his being energized by the band setting and the audiences notwithstanding? They're not just moot questions for me--on Thursday night I saw Neil Finn here in DC. I've seen him in a number of settings over the years, with various band members, and alone with just him and his guitar. Last night was the freshest, most relaxed, and most charming I've ever seen him. I last saw him last February in London and that was a pretty wonderful show with him hauling folks up out of the audience to play with him, changing the setlist, etc., but Thursday even topped that. My companion from the show in London is here and he agreed that Thursday's show was pretty amazing. In Mr. Finn's case, the setlists have been shaken up pretty seriously from night to night, and in DC he extended his show to 2 1/2 hours (a ten song encore!), with his being absent from the stage for no more than 5 or so minutes. As much as he hates being away from his family, he has these incandescent nights where he feeds off the audience and the result is his playing the songs he loves (and playing and playing). Naturally he's got the advantage over Mr. Ferry in that he can go for hours with only a guitar and/or a piano, but that sheer, sustained joy in performing is something I'm wondering if Mr. Ferry still has. ( Longish post) "... is Mr. Ferry enjoying himself on stage? And does that have any impact on the setlist? Would he enjoy himself more if it featured different songs?" One may only guess, Colleen. Ferry has always worn his heart on his sleeve when it comes to writing music, but he plays very close to the vest in personal matters. Perhaps our friends across the water who have lately seen Mr. Ferry in concert will be able to illuminate. I do hope BF is enjoying himself. Otherwise, I'd be very disappointed and I'd be compelled to think that he is only going through the motions in order to exploit his retirement. Now, the Neil Finn show sounds dynamite! - It is always a great pleasure when the artist enjoys the audience as much as Mr. Finn seems to have. (Somehow, I think Ferry's voice would go out if he attempted to do a 2 1/2 hour show!) Best wishes.
