Firstly this set list has been described as a "shrinking" one and this seems to be true. Certainly it seems very inflexable and already feels a bit stagnent, leaning too much on the Roxy favourites. Secondly, Bowies recent set lists by contrast have been very brave (playing Low & Heathen in thier complete form, what would I give to hear FYP & Frantic done the same way?, if it is arranged I'll be being interviewed by Lucifer himself). Bowies set lists since have been eclectic/adventurous & varied, this makes for an interested, enthused singer/band/audience. Conclusion, one of these guys is still passionate, inpired and interested in what he is doing and not just topping up his pension fund. I look forward to October with baited breath. ( Longish post) Due to the shrinking setlist I decided to give last weekends show a miss, I'm glad I did as I feel Ferry is now taking the fans for granted. I already have my tickets for the Glasgow and Manchester shows in October, I had also intended to attend the Edinburgh and at least one other of the indoor shows. Due to the fact that I don't entirely trust Ferry's comments on how much the set will change for these shows I've decided to stick with the Glasgow and Manchester shows until I see what changes will actually be made to the setlist. In fact had I not already purchased the Manchester ticket I would have stuck with just the Glasgow show. How do the other list members see things on this front? One of my friends who did attend last weekends Liverpool show has since informed me that when he had placed a recording he had made of the show on cd it only ran to 68 minutes, that's pretty poor in my book and certainly calls into question the value for money of Ferry's shows. So far the only show that I have attended was the Edinburgh 01/06/02 show, at least then we were treated to "Goddess of Love", "Fool for Love" and "Kiss and Tell" even if the band did sound short of rehearsal time. For me there will have to be at least six songs added / changed from the current setlist, I hope that I'm wrong but I don't really see Ferry putting in the rehearsal time for this to happen. After the rigidity of the Roxy setlist from last year and the current setlists lack of imagination I am for the first time in thirty years considering giving any future shows a miss. Much has been said about contracts dictating that the setlists have to include "the hits", well I for one would argue that does not mean the same ones all the time. I can think of at least another half dozen hits from the Roxy/Ferry catalogue that could take the place of tracks like "Oh Yeah", "Virginia Plain" or "Let's stick together", sadly Ferry seems to have forgotten the amount of hits he and Roxy have actually had. [cut] i don't know that this is true - that is - ferry taking fans for granted (maybe it is?). a lot of _americains_ were belly-aching about how ferry didn't seem to be making plans for a tour here. now, an announcement of said (u.s.) tour seems imminent. i'm beginning to think speculation just *sucks* and we should just deal in fact only. on the other hand, it would be nice if those in-the-know could somehow leak certain things to this list (hey, why not? governments do it every day). i say leak, only because it seems the only way for any of 'these people' to step up to the plate - uh, so to speak. i have to admit that i would love to better know the decision making process in ferryland - at least just for this tour. a fly on the wall. some of you have said it IS contractually obligatory for ferry to perform hits, etc. ... or maybe even down to the specific songs(?). i would like to know more myself. certainly some of you have better ideas as to how it goes down. let's hear it. >How do the other list members see things on this front? [cut]last weekends >Liverpool show only ran to 68 minutes, that's pretty poor in my book and >certainly calls into question the value for money of Ferry's shows. i'm sorry, thom ... how you can equate musical quality (or quality of any kind) by a quantitative measure is truly beyond me. 'to count the cost in money only strikes me funny don't you know'. i don't _get_ how you can think that way. if that's the case, do research on rollercoaster rides, then go to the best bang-fer-yer-sterling venue. i too wish he'd do a LOT of songs that he's NOT doing currently. i still say he ought to use us as setlist consultants and i'm not kidding. if lawn or someone else from the ferry camp ck's out the list from time to time they'd do well to listen to us vs. the moneymen, etc. we wouldn't even be asking for a contract. hell, we'll already be at the shows! they want a better deal than that?? frankly, if he showed up and did 'beauty queen' - but more importantly, 'strictly confidential' only, then i'd be really quite happy. just my thoughts. somebody wake up. peaces/ms ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Jul 2002 19:26:37 -0400 From: "seely31" Subject: [AVALON] North American tour Has anyone seen a comprehensive North American tour schedule for Fez? ( Longish post) >>How you can equate musical quality (or quality of any kind) by a quantitative measure is truly beyond me. I still say he ought to use us as setlist consultants peaces/ms<< ~I mostly agree with you, Mark. My take on the set list, until the statement Bryan made in interview last week about the limited number of Frantic songs he intended to add, had been how lucky for you blessed UKlanders to have the opportunity to hear two set lists, one on the early pass and one on the main tour in October. Admittedly, I try but can't get too worked up bahhumbugging the set list as I truly am too easily amused, but I must say the prospect of not getting to hear my favorite originals from Frantic performed (eventually) got my hackles up as far as the flimsy little things will go where Ferry is concerned, admittedly an anemic display of nambypamby discontent. ~I'm fairly certain Lawn and Ferry and the band do listen to us and react when not overwhelmed, but let's face it, if we all had to pow-wow and agree on a set list, it would never happen, though a majority of us might be able to agree on a few basic tenants, such as play originals from Frantic or drop a standard or two (example only: Do the Strand) for a fresher classic (example only: Beauty Queen). I remember hearing during the Roxy tour that there were close to 100 songs being rehearsed and that a lot of the choosing was done simply on what was sounding good and what wasn't. Remember If There is Something, a song much-in-demand by the established fans, was played early in the tour only to be dropped because they didn't feel it was working, a pity. Perhaps too high a value is being put on perfection when many of us would have been glad to hear it, even if it wasn't quite perfect. ~I do remember that Manzanera's website provided a poll for us to vote on the setlist. I remember Virginia Plain was number one, according to the poll, and that I speculated the reason it was number one might be because people who were just surfing voted for it because it was first on the list. I still have trouble believing that would be the number one choice, not that I don't love it. ~ I suppose the North American tour dates are imminent since you can now almost piece the tour together with the fragmented information being slipped by Bryan at interviews this past week; but I'm with you, it would be nice to get it before everyone else does since we put so much into it. Unfortunately, that, too, is no doubt dictated by a contract. Of course, we all know rules are meant to be broken! Whisper it in our ear. We won't tell!
