The 10 Best Make-Out Songs Ever By Cathryn Conroy, Netscape News Editor The 10 best make-out songs ever are guaranteed by the irreverent music magazine Blender to make you want to kissie, kissie, smooch, smooch. The list below was assembled based on a poll of revered music journalists (along with heated debate among Blender's staff members). The key to choosing a successful make-out song, Andy Pemberton, Blender's editor-in-chief, told The New York Post, is that it has to be soft and slow, have a gentle loping rhythm with a backbeat, and not be depressing. (Aside to Britney and *N SYNC and Jessica and Christina: Please step away. Your songs aren't on this list.) Listen to the radio while you surf the Net! From alternative to oldies--Netscape Radio has it all. And it's FREE. The top 10 songs identified as the best make-out songs ever are: 1. "Avalon" by Roxy Music 2. "November Rain" by Guns N' Roses 7. "Love Serenade" by Barry White 8. "Love to Love You Baby" by Donna Summer (one of my favorites) 9. "Wild Horses" by the Rolling Stones 10. Soetemann" Subject: Re: [AVALON] SOTW: "I Thought" I have mentioned that before, but to me, 'I Thought' is the standout track on 'Frantic'. For it merges the uniqueness of both Ferry's and Eno's music - the noble melancholy of the former, the clear and direct beauty of the latter. Ferry's lyrics are wonderful and characteristic - focussing on the very personal perspective, on iconization, longing and the gulf between romantic fantasy and apparent reality. The line 'subtitles when we speak' is one of Ferry's best lines ever; it has got that cinematic feel to it, yet would suggest some obscure film noir (hence the subtitles) shot in black & white rather than 'Wall Street', for example. First I was astonished to see five guitarists credited in the booklet, but when you listen closely, you'll hear that there are already two guitars at the start, then there's that great twangy bit that gives the structure of the piece a twist beyond Enoesque 'The River' territory, and somewhere in between, I think I can hear Eno strumming an acoustic. Well, that would be four guitars at least. Colin Good contributes his finest piano work on 'Frantic' (assuming the piano was played by him), and Ferry's silken vocal shows how intense his voice sounds nowadays, even if he may not go into higher bits as he did in the 70s. He sounds older, and maybe even sadder. The closing harmonica links perfectly with the line 'smothered in gold'. It sounds positive, and yet there's a feeling of finality, of goodbye to it. Somehow the song reminds me a bit of 'End Of The Line'... ('I thought / I'd find you walking in the rain' vs. 'Think I'll walk out in the rain', for exapmle) - sweet dejection with a ray of hope at the end. Classic stuff. Eno appeared to be calmly but fervently saying something to Ferry, making a point or telling a story, while Ferry was looking at himself in the rearview mirror, adjusting his tie. Personally I don't mind which, it would just be nice to hear something different. Only 2 songs and both of them Dylan covers. What's more, he omitted the last verse from Baby Blue. The way I see is there were 3 types of people at Liverpool: 1 the real Ferry/Roxy fans - who loved it because he could sing absolutely anything and we'd all still be there cheering, appreciating him. 2 people out for an evening's entertainment - which it definitely was and I'm sure nobody could have been disappointed. 3 fans of the chart hits - who must have had a wonderful time. So all in all everyone enjoyed it. If he'd only added a few originals maybe he would have collected more fans. Bryan was fabulous, as always. Seemed to be really enjoying himself too. The band were great, and the audience enthusiastic, although it took most of them 'til Hard Rain to get up, but by the end almost all were on their feet. What more can I say? It was good to meet with a few of you and especially nice to meet Irena from Latvia. I'd just like to wish her a happy 'rest of holiday' and a safe trip home. Looking forward to the next one, but especially the autumn.........fingers crossed! I'd suggest Roxy #1 through Siren. Those albums really show off Andy's talents. He also does a great solo on "All the Way From Memphis" by Mott the Hoople. If she really wants to hear Andy rock, check out his solo albums. Here are some AMG reviews. In Search of Eddie Riff (1974) A youthful Andy Mackay along with saxophone and cat stare out from the front cover of this compelling instrumental LP recorded between February of 1974 and June of 1975. Opening with a cool cover of "Wild Weekend," the Top Ten 1963 hit for the Rebels, this is fun stuff from the artsy realm of serious U.K. musicians. With less complexity than listeners have come to expect from Roxy Music alum, an innocent ballad like Skeeter Davis' "The End of the World" becomes transcendent by way of simple instrumentation - Mackay's sax as the lead instrument, tasty guitars, and keys filling in nicely. There is a definite '60s feel to this album, perhaps a testimonial along with the reinterpretation of the four covers included in this mix of originals and traditional songs. Mackay's "Walking the Whippet" is like some rave amendment to the number one surf rock hit from 1962, "Telstar" by the Tornadoes. The back cover has what looks like a nuclear rocket tilted right with a sax shifting left against a cloudy background. The version of Motown's "What Becomes of The Broken Hearted" leans more towards Muzak than the experimentation one would expect from this Roxy crew. Former bandmate Eno along with his replacement in Roxy Music, Eddie Jobson, and the usual suspects, John Porter, Paul Thompson, even Deep Purple's Roger Glover, all conspire and bring inspiration to this highly listenable project. The arrangement of Schubert's "An Die Musik" changes the mood dramatically. Whatever fueled the Ferry/Eno split, the creative ideas of individual members of RM started spreading out over many solo discs at this point in time, from Phil Manzanera's Diamond Head to Eno and Ferry's multitudinous albums on their own. Guitarist Manzanera's disc sounds more like a test of Roxy's themes, a good supplement to the contributor's various facets, while here Andy Mackay just seems to be expressing himself and having fun. Released on the cusp of what the French would call the nouvelle vague, containing flavors of girl group instrumentation and other '60s musical references, there is a good balance between familiar songs - The Beatles' "Long and Winding Road" and atmospheric pieces like "The Hour Before Dawn" or the album's high point, "Pyramid of Night (Past, Present and Future," both composed by Andy Mackay. The Mackay/Eno composition "Time Regained" is also worth noting. Good background party music that will keep your guests from leaving. Resolving Contradictions (1978) For his second solo album, Andy Mackay enlisted the assistance of two of his Roxy Music friends (Phil Manzanera and Paul Thompson), and following a visit to China in 1978 he recorded this "tribute" to China. And it worked. It worked brilliantly. Incorporating traditional Chinese sounds with his progressive rock background, Mackay was able to forge new sounds that made for fascinating listening. This instrumental album not only highlights Mackay's brilliant playing but his underrated talent for writing incredibly melodic, moving songs. The moods on this album move from melancholy to joyous, and it all makes sense. When Mackay reissued the album in 1992 on his own Riff label, he added four outtakes that. While interesting, neither adds nor detracts from the original beauty of this album. This album does not disappoint, and it also features one of the most brilliant album titles of all time. Christmas (1989) Christmas albums are tricky things, because the artist is tackling a listener's past memories and emotions of Christmas. The most successful Christmas albums are those in which the artist does not tamper with the songs too much. On this album, Andy Mackay and his friends (known as the Players) present an album of traditional Christmas carols. Mackay does not deviate from the traditional arrangements with these songs, and he also has picked some classic songs that are not heard that often on Christmas albums ("While Shepherds Watched," "Past Three O'Clock," and "Once in David's City," to name three). This adds to the originality of the entire package. It is an instrumental album, which means this is the perfect CD to have in the background during Christmas festivities. Phil Manzanera basically acts as the executive producer, and thus does not play on the album. This is more or less a solo Andy Mackay album, and a good one. Fans of Christmas music will truly love this album. The combination of brass instruments and strings produces a beautiful sound. Fans of Mackay might be a bit surprised with this one but, again, it is a rewarding album. *** - ----- Original Message ----- From: "diane whateley" To: Sent: Monday, July 15, 2002 2:41 PM Subject: [AVALON] RE: Anorak time and Andy Mackay > I have a friend whose daughter (age 15)plays oboe in a National youth orchestra and anounced her intention of playing in a rock band!
