Best Regards, Bruce The 10 Best Make-Out Songs Ever By Cathryn Conroy, Netscape News Editor The 10 best make-out songs ever are guaranteed by the irreverent music magazine Blender to make you want to kissie, kissie, smooch, smooch. The list below was assembled based on a poll of revered music journalists (along with heated debate among Blender's staff members). The key to choosing a successful make-out song, Andy Pemberton, Blender's editor-in-chief, told The New York Post, is that it has to be soft and slow, have a gentle loping rhythm with a backbeat, and not be depressing. (Aside to Britney and *N SYNC and Jessica and Christina: Please step away. Your songs aren't on this list.) The top 10 songs identified as the best make-out songs ever are: 1. "Avalon" by Roxy Music 2. "Turn Off the Lights" by Teddy Pendergrass 3. "Let's Get It On" by Marvin Gaye 4. "Down Low (Nobody Has to Know)" by R. Kelly 5. "If I Was Your Girlfriend" by Prince 6. "November Rain" by Guns N' Roses 7. "Love Serenade" by Barry White 8. "Love to Love You Baby" by Donna Summer 9. "Wild Horses" by the Rolling Stones 10. "All Blues" by Miles Davis - -- "What's so funny 'bout peace, love & understanding?" I'm a 28 year old postgraduate student at the University of Glasgow in Scotland. Among the myriad reasons I feel an attachment to Bryan Ferry's music is that it's taking me as long to write a phd thesis as it does he to record an album of originals. Here all similarity ends. As my academic supervisors will testify, my stuff ain't worth the wait. Anyway, I was very interested in the current conversation about Colin Good's purported influence on Frantic, particularly regarding the substitution of covers for Ferry originals. The Great Man (Ferry - not Good) often admits his difficulty composing these days. I wonder if Frantic's shape is, then, a largely pragmatic decision on his part. Is he chary of emptying the originals cupboard in one go in case it takes years to stock up again? Perhaps The Bride Stripped Bare will continue to be the model for future releases in one sense but not another. We'll continue to get eclectic selections of material as Ferry unveils originals by the ration book; but like Frantic and unlike Bride, albums to come may lack the kind of thematic unity that's often present in past work. Some one needs to enlighten Leaving aside the idea that somehow the 56 year old Ferry is going to suddenly ignite his career and turn into a superstar, it has been widely speculated--if not asserted--on this mailing list that as the meat of the tour takes place in the fall in indoor venues in the UK and North America, these summer appearances--many of which are in festival settings--cannot necessarily be taken as the model for the entire tour. This speculation is based on the experience of the _As Time Goes By_ tour, which opened in indoor venues and whose setlist heavily featured the ATGB album, and whose setlist was changed for larger, outdoor venues that following summer. It seems reasonable to assume the same thing may very well happen in reverse this year. However, if y'all want to start complaining about shows which haven't happened yet, in tandem with earlier over-reaction about dates 6 or more months away which had not yet been finalized and therefore had not been announced, I suppose it'll just be business as usual on Avalon. I would suggest that before panties get into a wad that the tour be allowed to make its transition from outdoor to indoor venues, but I know that's a faint hope, so here are some other areas that y'all might like to start complaining about in advance (you know, just to give the rest of us some variety): - --the quality of the restrooms at the venues - --the relative attractiveness of the crowd - --the price of the concessions - --the length of Mr. Ferry's hair - --the amount of traffic in your area - --global warming - --El Nino - --supply side economics Colleen ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Jul 2002 00:26:44 +0100 From: "thom.wallace" Subject: [AVALON] Re: Holy Bat News/Writers Block - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Colleen Matan" To: Sent: Sunday, July 14, 2002 12:03 AM Subject: Re: [AVALON] Re: Holy Bat News "This speculation is based on the experience of the _As Time Goes By_ tour, which opened in indoor venues and whose setlist heavily featured the ATGB album, and whose setlist was changed for larger, outdoor venues that following summer. Very true Colleen, but by the time of the outdoor shows in 2000 he was promoting the Slave to Love compilation, will there be a new product in the stores by the time of the indoor leg of the tour that's the question. I had thought that there my well have been the chance of a second album this year, I'm starting to revue my thoughts on that, but lets hope to goodness that we don't get another compilation. Ferry has gone on record as saying that he has suffered from writers block, however in his case it happens when it comes time to write down a set list. in otherwords "less new material in set = less rehearsals = less work for the money". I do hope there is a big change in the setlist for the indoor shows, I really do hope he is as good as his word on what material we have to look forward to, but I'll believe it when I see it. best wishes, Tom You can also contact me at: TomWallace@vivaroxymusic.com ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Jul 2002 01:26:55 +0100 From: "Mark Yates" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Re: Holy Bat News As per usual Colleen. Hi Joep, and thanks both delurking and for the kind words. And you lead me to a question I meant to ask the group last week: I 'brought back' the SOTW last week in a light-hearted way, but should I bring it back on a weekly basis again?
