The definative version for me has to be Cliff Bennett & the Rebel Rousers, with its repetitive brass rift, a fine example of mid sixties British (Rubber?) soul. Bennett also had a hit with "Got to get you into my life" which was on the Beatles "Revolver" which also included "Tomorrow Never Knows" or "TNK" .....now there is a cover version. For OWL file under "Average , approach with caution" Steve ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Jul 2002 21:44:30 -0400 From: "Helen Thorpe" Subject: [AVALON] Current newbies To quote Rod: "So seriously, what are Avalonians listening to for new music which may have filled the void that Roxy/Bowie left? Are you listening to corporate rock or small independent label stuff?" I'm finding "new music" is getting harder and harder to access. Local radio station just don't want to take the risk of playing a new artist. And, established artists' back catalogs are used to promote new material. Ozzy's "Dreamer" has been refered to by my local rock station as "new Ozzy" for the last 3 months. Being in Canada does mean that I am being subjected to stupefying amounts of the new Rush album, "Vapour Trails". Which, from what I've heard, sounds like they just discovered that Grunge had happened. Current, newer faves (and I don't own any of 'em) are Bif Naked, No Doubt, Moby and Shania Twain. The pile of CDs beside me right now include the requisite over-abundance of Roxy-related matter, Erasure, U2, Midge Ure, The Jam, Velvet Underground, an 80s compilation and a compilation of late 70s British Punk. As I type - Eno's Tiger Mountain is blasting off the turntable and p-ing off the neighbours. Pretty sad. Radio is now so fragmented in Canada that it's a full time job just trying to find something both new and listenable. And the only concerts I'll be attending this year are Ferry and Concrete Blonde. The Area 2 tour looked interesting, but so much stuff I have absolutely no interest in that I wasn't about to blow bucks on it. There - my nickel's worth. Concrete Blonde plays live here next Friday night. My favorites from new album are "Roxy" (of course), "Your Llorona" (exquisitely beautiful) and "True Part III." Hopefully they'll do lots from the new album. I also want to hear Johnette do "Everybody Knows." Can't wait to see/hear Bryan on Leno Monday night. I have my fingers crossed on his musical selection(s).
