Just for info, but I think I may have mentioned this before, Keith at Smile (Kings Rd, Chelsea) was the hair stylist for all of Roxy on the first two albums AND he did THAT hairstyle on Ferry for These Foolish Things. THAT style is the one for which he is most famous and the one he's talking about in GQ. Keith was a good friend and my hairdresser between 1979 and 1994 (when I moved away from London) and is a top geezer. He does have some chagrin that people like me sought him out because he did THAT hairstyle when, some 29 years later, he HAS created many others. But I think he accepts now that it's that period with which he is most associated, even though he was highly visible in the punk/Jubilee years and created the nutty boy hair styles for Madness, to name but two. He also created the hair style for Bowie in the Blue Jean video (he did tell me how that was done and you would NOT believe how complex the whole thing was!). So I look forward to the magazine and hopefully a good read. I also hope I've clarified Jonathan's report and Marlana will now recant. That style on These Foolish Things looks SUPERB on Ferry! Funnily though, TFF was recorded at a time when Ferry would NOT have his hair CUT. So, as previously described by me in Avalon, Keith clipped Ferry's hair back so it would look short and all-American, but in fact was long down the back. And before Bryan Ferry writes to deny this, I've seen studio shots of Keith's where Ferry's hair is hung up in these huge clips at the back, but it looks ultra smart from the front, ready to usher in a new wave of copyists for the 70s glam revolution. And of course, when it did, Ferry soon had his own hair shorter to lead the way for real. Best wishes Richard Mills n/p Heathen - Bowie. After that superb concert in London last weekend, isn't everybody? Oh, you mean there were only a few thousand there? You don't know what you missed... ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Jul 2002 13:14:54 +0100 From: "terrypaulrigz8c" Subject: [AVALON] Frantic/Heathen nil nil I see Heathen, like Frantic has not troubled the UK top 20 for long, 2 of the best releases in ages, the artists have backed them up with good publicity/reviews etc. Still they fail to reach their former glories. One of my friends called last night to let me know he'd heard a review of _Frantic_ on public radio. "Bryan Ferry has a new album out," he told me, sure he was bringing me breaking news, "and it's an album of folk songs or something." I quickly straightened him out (he was extrapolating, having heard the Dylan songs and the mention of "Good Night Irene"). And, for what it's worth, I don't have the same disappointed reaction to _Heathen_ that Ken Tucker did; in fact, I'm looking forward to seeing Bowie in a few weeks. Apart from the fact the clips from the albums in the piece sounded like they were created by putting a speaker up to the microphone, I was struck at how odd Mr. Ferry's singing voice sounds within the context of the radio piece. I was trying to imagine myself as someone who'd never heard him before... Getting kinda rusty..... M GQ's Snob Fashion Blurb Leads to Ferry's Secret England - In GQ's recent Fashion Snob column, Keith Wainwright, singer Bryan Ferry's supposedly long-time hairstylist, claimed that his illustrious client's hairstyle has been his most popular. Since making the revelation, more men have requested the style at their local barber. Mr. Ferry was forced to reveal to the public that Mr. Wainwright has never cut his hair and he was paid to endorse the hairstylist. "My wife Lucy cuts my hair and dyes it too," stated Mr. Ferry proudly. "Before I got married, I whipped out the scissors on a rainy afternoon for some entertainment. Sometimes one of my sons will give me a trim. They take turns whenever they're home from school. Occasionally, they make a mistake but it's ok. It's a fun family activity and they share in the pride and joy knowing that they've given me a wonderful hairdo." We asked if the family makes suggestions for new hairstyles. After much probing, Mr. Ferry answered that his youngest son Merlin wants to trim his eyebrows but he refuses. "He's not skilled enough with the scissors and that is a mistake I cannot afford." Ok, folks I for one was quite nervous when I heard Ferry and Bowie were going to release new albums this year. And after listening to both of them over the past month I have to admit the Bowie CD ends up in the player more then the Ferry CD. I'm just not that interested in re-makes and tend to skip past them(in fact I may go as far as to creating a new revised Ferry CD with only the self penned tracks on it from Frantic/Horoscope and Alphaville(if I ever track it down), I think that would be kinda cool to do in Cool Edit). I do want to say that I can't imagine what it's like trying to remain creative after all these years especially with the responsibilities of a family and still trying to carry on as a "cool" rock star or is it "cool ruler". I think by now most of us serious music listeners have moved on to other artists for our creative appetites! Remember when Roxy started they were on the for front of experimental ya-da ya-da rock. So seriously, what are Avalonians listening to for new music which may have filled the void that Roxy/Bowie left? Are you listening to corporate rock or small independent label stuff?
