(longish) As exclaimed by one Mr Ferry, the endearingly geographically dyslexic Mr F who has never performed in Aberdeen before. Perhaps he was referring to a previous fishing trip, as the River Dee is famous for it's salmon stocks(and a very soothing way to deal with the excesses of the night before is to sit by the banks dreamily watching them leap one or two feet out of the clear torrents as they swim uphill to spawn). I don't know what it is about Scotland, but we always manage to have a particularly rip roaring time when we venture North of the Border, and Aye-bur-deen (as J O'B coached us) is as far North as I've been in this fair isle. It really is beautiful up here (as Bryan also mentioned, but yet again he could have meant on stage - but only if he didn't take the lads into his eyeline). Crathes was much smaller than I'd imagined, and the castle looked like someone had been messing with the vertical hold, a very extruded fairy tale fortress. The word was that 6,000 tickets had been sold, and how they expected to accommodate a throng of such magnitude on the lawn was a bit of mystery. maybe a bit of a spin on the numbers, although everyone we met or spoke to, from the girls manning the lines at Crathes when the tickets first went on sale, to the local newspaper staff list, to our airport taxi driver, all seemed to be going. Our cabbie regaled us with drunken tales of Van Morrison destroying his hotel the year before last, and James Brown putting on a sterling performance last year. I wonder what his story will be about the Ferry stay. I'll save you the Reecey-esque details of our movements from the moment the alarm went off at 5.30am, needless to say that after a hiccup at the airport where we left it to the wire in much the same way J O'B and I did en route to Moscow (it's not like I need an artificial injection of adrenalin under theses circumstances) all went smoothly. Met the clan O'Brien at the airport and was whisked away for breakfast as stair-rod rain lashed Aberdeen beach. Don't think we'll have trouble with the midgies tonight, but where did we put the pack-a-macs? After checking into our wonderful hotel with the funniest, friendliest staff you could wish to meet and a much needed afternoon siesta, we roused ourselves for a spot of high tea and pre concert drinks with Jane and Al, Danny and Sue, J O'B, two mini O'B's, Mrs O'B, Mother-in-law O'B, friends of O'B's , O'B's next door neighbour's dog and Uncle Tom Cobley et al. Nabbed the last existing taxi in the Shire to go up to the castle (which I swore from that moment on was actually walkable, much to the derision of everyone else). After ripping out the undercarriage of his people carrier on a hidden granite bolder, our cabbie Stuart dropped us about a mile from the venue vowing to return for us after the concert. Within minutes of arriving we did an SAS reccie of the layout. Chemical toilets at 9 o'clock, beer tent at 1 o'clock, and stage directly in front at 6 o'clock. We could do this blindfold. Sidled off down to the front to chat with the locals who make this a yearly pilgrimage and you could just tell this was a friendly crowd up for anything (Although as JF Roxy rightly reported it did kick off during Let's Stick Together - I suspect over an argument of the merits of playing a long time standard over the obscurity of little played In Your Mind tracks - oh OK, it was because of booze!!) Still it had no effect on us (unlike the miniatures of vodka a very naughty Mrs Fraser kept sneaking into our pints of diet coke). The atmosphere was electric. A wedding reception type band with a repertoire of punk standards had got everyone revved up before Ms Horse took to the stage. Thankfully she didn't bore us all rigid with her tales of Chocolate Starfish (it's a song, honest!) this time round and before you knew it the headliners were on stage. Mr F appeared to wearing an obvious dollop of stage slap which made me wonder if it was being filmed, the usual opening bass line into Baby Blue and we're off singing our heads off like a football crowd and generally acting the goat right the way throughout. Sarah's quite used to these occasional audience performances, but the other backing dancers aren't, and they cracked up throughout the entire concert. Even Spedding burst out laughing at one point (and that's not easy to achieve). Bryan, never particularly fluent with the Hard Rain lyrics lost it completely as we all performed our miming rain dance. It was one of those concerts, a bit like Elton Hall, when the give and take of band and audience came together to produce a brilliant time which was had by all (except the guys trying to kick each others heads in). The set grew smaller, but as our flagging go-goed out hearts were on the point of packing up it was probably for the best. Oh and Let's Stick Together has been dropped in favour of the Mighty Quo's classic Rockin' All Over The World. All too soon, it's all over now. But putting on Sultanesque is not the best way to persuade the masses there's no 3rd encore and the Aberdonians pressed limpet-like against the stage for a good 15 minutes more. We elected to scramble for last orders at the beer tent and found you could purchase an entire brewery in Scotland for the price of two g and t's in London. Then a saunter through a mile of forest under a beautiful clear dark sky, dodging sex offenders with torches in the bushes (they said they were security but I had my suspicions) and a route march home as Stuart the cabbie had gone drive about. The usual mayhem around a bar and a piano back at the hotel. A game of "if you could elect just 5 Ferry penned tunes and one cover what would they be?". To bed far too late, a Bloody Mary hair of the dog watching the World Cup Final, an Aberdeen Angus roast beef dinner next day and to the airport. Where a "no pictures please" Jane Fraser arrives as evening falls, complete with dark glasses. She only has herself to blame. One of the best Ferry related weekends I've spent - but then I always say that. Ah, but they missed a chance to tactically include This Is Tomorrow, the last opportunity to sing "Here in the hush of evening on a night in June..." After picking up the hire car in Aberdeen, we enjoyed a scenic tour of the local industrial estates, en route to finding the hotel. Why is it that whenever you get lost there's always an industrial estate! Arrived at Crathes just as the 'house' was closing for the day and after failing to find the concert car park settled for the VIP/coach park instead-as it turned out later, a good decision. After being told we could 'walk around' for a bit, as in Edinburgh I suddenly found myself at the soundcheck looking from the sidelines as Bryan and Paul took to the stage.Bryan "It's a canny wee place this", Paul "Ey it is that" much laughter!.Bryan then played a solo song on the piano and was gone. The rest of the band went through a full version of 'Slave to Love' with Colin Good on lead vocal, sounding actually pretty good. Then as they finished on stage, after a bit of unorganised security mayhem we were let into the showground 'officially' and took up residence at the front of the barrier."How long before Bryan is on stage?" my son asked "Er.. only about 3 hours" I mumbled after checking my watch, didn't quite catch what he said in reply. First band on 'Fubar' played some good covers and livened up the crowd, highlights being 'whisky in the jar','teenage kicks' and 'teenage dirtbag' my son cheered up a bit as he knew some of these songs and some by Blink182. 'Horse' came on and played all her own songs for 45 minutes and frankly no one there was interested! The gig has already been described pretty well Bryan seemed to have a little less energy than usual, but everybody was generally in very good form especially Colin and Lucy. One or two fights behind me and one or two hundred very drunk people having a ball. Several priceless comments: Me(to a couple whom I had seen at previous concerts wearing Roxy hats,t-shirts) "do you belong to the Avalon list?",Him "what?" with a look to me as if I had asked him if he was a child molester! Me "Obviously not!". Before the show someone looking through the programme: "Oh yes that's his best album" pointing to one of the 'Greatest hits' albums!, After the show: "28 f*****g pounds 50! and he never played Avalon" Managed to grab a quick word with some of the band after the show, Colin Good saying that the sound from the crowd was so loud, that he couldn't hear anything else at the start of 'Dance Away' and just joined in when he saw the others start playing! Great end to a great gig and as we left the venue, over an hour after the show ended, people were still trying to get out of the main car park!. They play regularly in a club for which one has to 'audition', before being admitted to the membership! As you can imagine, not having played for 6 years did not provide me with any confidence at all in my comparative abilities....suffice to say it wasn't as terrible an experience as I thought!! Cutting back to the chase, having borrowed a car from a relative I made my way to Banchory, which is 3 miles from Crathes and got installed in my B&B. The kindly landlady drove me to venue amid assurances that walking back would be much quicker than trying to get out of the official car park at the end, which was a mile away from the castle in any case!! Walking towards the castle, I met Jim Lawn and he brought me up to date and explained why the Brazil gigs had been postponed- they had a lot of worth while promotion lined up all of a sudden. I watched both of the support bands and cannot really add much to what others have said, but that they were not bad at all! The one thing that affected me most about the whole experience was the demon, drink!!On the tickets, it said that no food or drink of any description was allowed in the grounds, because of course there were stalls selling comestibles etc. All fine and well I hear you say, but consider this, the doors opened at 5.30pm and the main man doesn't come on till 9.15pm...By that time a lot of people are 'well away..if they'd been allowed to bring their own, then what they could carry would have limited consumption. I like a good drink like anyone else, I am Scottish after all, and enjoy a good time, but ... What happened was, that there was a large group of drunken women standing behind me brandishing pint glasses of wine, constantly shrieking shouting abuse(!) and throwing their arms into the air and clapping. They were awful- I nearly got my eye put out by someone's elbow. I could hardly hear Bryan for the continual racket and at times I was almost knocked over by their erratic jumping up and down.(Think Russian shot putters!) I can tell you if it was the only BF concert that I was going to see I'd be so upset and disapointed at missing his singing for the cat calls and general drunkeness. I did try and remonstrate with them to no avail...all of a sudden something came over me and I turned 'round and punched my fist into my hand inches away from one of the women's face! She got a real fright as I told her in no uncertain terms what I thought of their behaviour. At that, their group seemed to gather together and they made a move on me en masse, but some older women next to me who'd been as furious as I'd been, quickly took me away to one side, saying that it was not worth getting involved, and by implication, beaten up!! I then opted for a stiff drink as I realised what I might have got myself into...maybe it was the Glaswegian in me, coming out! I later met Duncan Watkins who kindly gave me a lift along the road. At the end of it all, I forced myself to think that surely Belvoir will be better, the set longer, the crowd less drunk and more interested? The irony of it all as I later discovered was that the band thought they'd had a rapturous reception, when it was really only down to so many people being completely out of it. However last week in Virgin this track was being played and I stayed in the store and listened to every last note...mmmm. I discovered Radioio a few weeks ago, and they've played at least one track every day from Frantic, as well as periodic selections from early Roxy & Ferry albums. It's well formatted and diverse. Not many other places where you can hear Nick Drake, either! Perhaps you could do with a lesson or four in intermediate grammar! << For those of you who will no doubt be grateful, I responded to this confused attack off-line. I do want anyone interested to know that my initial reply to Daniel's post was in no way an attack, as has been inferred by the couple of people who missed the humorous tone of my post and responded negatively, and that Daniel, who I've always liked very much, has confirmed that he didn't take it as one. I do not approve of attacking people on-list and would never instigate such a thing but will not back down when attacked, whether due to confusion or malice, though even then I try to do so with humor when possible. Thanks to those who wrote privately their support and shared bewilderment. Jonathan, I think you might have this track and Goin' Down confused as OWL is totally brilliant and GD absolute dreck. Just my not so humble opinion.
