Please be able to send 2 good quality CDs with one additional CD for replies from England and two CDs for replies from elsewhere - to cover my expenses. I must also mention that it was Stefan's birthday over the weekend which, I understand, he celebrated in style. Keep up the chatter, all - much enjoyed if not replied to. In fact, you never see it on Avalon. Thanks for bringing something new to the table, Mike! To answer your question, More Than This has never been a live standard. Bry did it for a few of the early Avalon shows in 1982, some of the 2001 UK dates and also in Japan last September, but about ten total performances in all, because he has trouble hitting the high notes. (The obvious solution, to me, is that if you've got a great set of lyrics like that and can't sing the key, rework the arrangement and sing it lower... but, Casanova and Mother of Pearl aside, Bry's never been a big one for rearranging his own songs.) Avalon is a big problem for his current band, because, as shown to sometimes painful effect on the 2001 tour, Sarah Brown is sadly incapable of singing the ending. Yanick Ettienne can sing it, Sarah cannot. So I tend to think we won't see Avalon on this tour. Jealous Guy is very probably with us for the long haul, though. You don't really have to worry about seeing Bryan Ferry live and not hearing Jealous Guy. You will find, in time, that Avalon has a number of very vocal members who do not much care for these songs, have seen Bry live more times than you'll have hot dinners, and have copies of most of Ferry's live performances and have frequently expressed the opposite desire -- to e-mail Bry and beg him to drop the "standards" from his set list and play newer songs and older numbers rarely heard. (Personally, I'm sick to the back teeth of Jealous Guy, and, heretically, In Every Dream Home a Heartache.) So thanks for bringing up a contrary view! - --Grant _________________________________________________________________ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Jun 2002 15:29:24 +0200 From: Daniel Atterbom Subject: Re: [AVALON] missing my songs I would like to point out that I like Grant a lot, but I beg to differ. I enjoy both Jealous Guy and In Every Dream Home a Heartache. To me they represent the best in Bryan Ferry, his ability to cover a somg and to make into his own and his masterful writing of original material. More Than This is another of my favorite Ferry compositions. I agree with Grant that they should lower the key and rework it. I really like perfermers that change their songs, Joe Jackson's Is she really going out with him? with three different versions on the live album comes to mind. On the new versions of Casanova and Mother of Pearl Ferry indeed added something with the new versions, on the other Roxy tracks on Let's stick together nothing much was gained. Roxy seldom surprised m,e after I discovered them back in 1976, Bryan Ferry still do. When Roxy did surprise it was with two execellent cover versions, Jealous Guy and Like a Hurricane. Bryan Ferry delievered a very good album in Frantic. Avalon is another song that could benefit from another, new arrangement. I am a bit tired of it, although I really like the song. It's bit like when I was five and motorcared in Germany with my parents. I ate sausage every night for weeks. Now some 35 years later I never eat sausage at all. That would be great Grant ... buggered if I know why he didn't do the same with "It's all over now, baby blue." A friend of mine, who's fond of making fun of Ferry says that Bryan doesn't so much hit notes as "suggest" their existence. He says to the listener "There's a note up there. You know it. I know it. But I won't be so gauche as to actually try to hit it." I think part of the Ferry mystique for a long time (until recently) is the feeling that he isn't trying that hard. Lounge lizards, after all, aren't supposed to break a sweat. The myth was exploded with "Baby Blue". After a year of treeing Roxy and Bryan Ferry projects, my original CD drive has surrendered in much the same way, I would imagine, as Reecey's video. At first, it was just the occasional blip. It would eject while copying, claim it was too slow to read the master, in the end too many excuses. I'd be checking the result of each one and they'd all end on the dumper. So yesterday I went to the PC store and bought myself a brand new DVD drive. Something I've needed the excuse and the money to do for a while (the original CD drive is 6 yrs old and got used much more than the average)...and it's fantastic. OK so i've not set it up to watch movies yet, but burning these latest tree items (the Belfast gig plus a few bonus surprise tracks) has become a piece of cake! So...if you have been waiting for your item and have been getting irritated or anxious ("grrr, where's that pesky CD?"), it will be with you now very shortly and I'm sorry. If you wondered how to get hold of the radio broadcast of Bryan Ferry's Jubilee Belfast concert on CD, send me a line offlist and I'll send details. It's like a guy who couldn't walk being able to get up and dance again! best wishes Richard Mills n/p yeah right, what do you think? ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://helios.unive.it/~tcecilia/meetup.html ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V7 #215 **************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
