Thanks to their promotion with the Daily Express newspaper, we each travelled for just #25 return. We arrived after midnight and were met by my brother-in-law Paul and his girlfriend Christine, who live in a village called Gilly, outside the city - way outside, in the middle of gorgeous countryside carpeted with acres of vineyards. Soon we were comfortably ensconced and slept like babies till late morning. Unfortunately, Christine had received an irresistible offer of work in the Hague, Netherlands which meant she would be away for most of my visit. This meant she missed the trip to Montreux (Thurs), the BF show on Friday and the football (soccer) on Saturday when her native Danes would play England in the world cup. Thursday So, instead of the chauffeuse driven ride to Montreux, I borrowed a car and drove Charlotte to this beautiful and glamorous town on the edge of Lac Leman, a lake some 70 miles long that is also called Lake Geneva further along. I love Montreux, having visited there in January in very cold winter, not knowing we would return quite so soon (and again next month for David Bowie's appearance at their festival!). I love the layout of the town, the way it goes right up to the lake and the Alps rise up on the other side of the lake, like the timeless giants that they are. Beautiful in winter, breathtaking in summer. The weather was an enormous plus. Just one week ago, Switzerland had storms that saw four inches of rain in two days. Right now, it is beautiful and hot. Around 30 degrees or high 80s, depending on your choice of weather systems. The reason for the visit to Montreux this time was purely touristy. I'd pre-booked by Internet a tour of Freddie Mercury's Montreux. Hokum for sure, but the package contained enough elements of interest for me to sign up (see www.montreux.ch/queen for details). We arrived at lunchtime (it was a drive of about 40 miles) and were in time for our 2pm tour of Mountain Studios, location for the recording of most Queen albums, as well as Never Let Me Down by Bowie and many more. Resident producer David Richards sent his girlfriend, a cellist called Nathalie, to give us the tour as he was feeling unwell (it turned out he'd had too much sun the day before). Have to say the studios, although rightly famous in the world of recording, were a tad disappointing in real life. Charlotte was amazed at how small the place was. On screen in videos and in photos, they always look enormous with acres of space for band members to play and fool about. In reality, the console room and the studio are two pokey rooms on different floors of the building, connected by video camera/intercom. But the sense that some very special music was made there remains in an almost tangible way. Nathalie asked us to come back that evening to meet David when he would be feeling better. So after some photos and chat, we made our way to the Auditorium Stravinsky (where Bowie's playing next month) to get our boat for the next part of the tour. Unfortunately, the boat had broken its rudder. So there was a delay while a replacement was found but soon, we were headed off across an azure Lac Leman, making a beeline for the lake house owned once by Freddie Mercury. He owned two homes in Montreux, his adopted home (for tax exile reasons but, if you're to be a tax exile, what a place to be exiled to!): his private dwelling was an apartment on the top floor of a four storey house on the other side of Montreux but still on the waterfront, along the coast, the lake house (with the wooden structure shown on the cover of "Made In Heaven") was where he would hold his legendary parties. You could imagine his leaping into boats and careering off from one to the other. Apologies if this has been done before but what places of interest would make up the ultimate Roxy tourist sightseeing tour? The weather was perfect for this journey across water and, when we were dropped off, Charlotte and I hired a motor boat so we could head back out onto the lake, this time steering (mostly Charlotte) wherever we chose and we chose the famous chateau where Lord Byron wrote "The Prisoner of Chillon" in 1816, (see http://www.photoaspects.com/chesil/byron/chillon.html for text). This poem was written by Byron when on vacation in Switzerland with Percy and Mary Shelley; it was on this holiday, when they each told each other stories at night times, that the character of Frankenstein was created. On our return to shore, Charlotte and I, together with fellow tour-mates, revisited Mountain Studios, part of the famous Casino building. This time, we met David Richards who recounted memories of working with Queen, especially the night he saw Freddie and David Bowie in the bar of the Casino and just knew he would end up working late that night as engineer in the studio. He was right and the song they kept him up recording until 5am was "Under Pressure". He also talked about how he was pleased and privileged to grant Freddie's dying wishes of working in the studio, until he could work no more, setting up recording of vocals in the console room when Freddie could no longer make the stairs. However, he said it's only 10 years later that he has really got over the strain of that involvement and Brian May can't face working there anymore to this day. There is some work planned on the whole Casino complex including the studio (which Queen have since sold to David Richards) and he hopes that Brian May will decide to return after that is done. Lastly, I visited the statue of Freddie (also pictured on "Made in Heaven") on the shore of Lac Leman and placed roses at his feet (part of the tour package, not necessarily something I'd have thought of doing myself). It was quite cute, Charlotte - who has quite recently discovered Queen and is going to see the new show We Will Rock You with me in London tonight (Tuesday) - wrote "Freddie, you did great music, we were born to love you" on the flower tag. Not sure of the grammar but the sentiment was unprompted and sound. We then drove back to Gilly where we were staying. A moment of self-doubt when I realised I didn't have the address or telephone number of where we were staying, but the directions were excellent and we were soon driving with vineyards either side of us and we homed in on our destination. Friday We travelled across the border into France (Collonges-sous-Saleves) to see my sister-in-law Ros and her children Sam and Rebecca for lunch, followed by a spontaneous game of cricket played (on this occasion) with three plastic skittles, a tennis ball and a squash racquet. Improvisation being the key to all things... Early evening, we headed back into Switzerland and Gilly. After a quick wash and brush up, we headed out to Nyon, where the Caribana Festival in Crans-sur-Nyon was taking place. Admirable Swiss clockwork planning, no traffic jams, immediate entry into parking a short walk from the festival site and we're in! The site was quite empty in front of the stage and, despite reservations on the practice previously aired at Avalon, I agreed to sit at the front of the crowd on the grass bank just a few feet from the stage. Something didn't feel quite right. Where was Reecey? I didn't ever hear him say he would be there, but does he ever actually miss Bryan Ferry concerts? And if he attends them, is he ever more than six feet from the stage? But nope, no sign of him anywhere. Of course, as soon as we sat there, people started to pour in and thought it would be acceptable to just walk in and stand in front of the stage, blocking the view of anyone who'd patiently waited to see the show sitting down. What is it with people? I know. Avalonians by the tens will shoot me down in flame for not recognising the freedom and unadulterated joy of shaking one's booty to music, but why don't they then stand at the back? What makes them think it's OK to obstruct the view of hundreds of people behind them when they have only just arrived? And no, Charlotte can't just stand and then see, she still can't because her height means she still only sees the backs of these arses...literally. Anyhow, Paul and I accompanied Charlotte to a place from where she would be able to see the stage (thanks guys!) much further away to one side. We had arrived at 9.30pm, just in time to see Marianne Faithful and decided later to put that down to experience. She was truly embarrassing and not the charismatic figure I'd expected (having seen her impressive performance on Jonathan Ross' TV show). The voice is that raspy deep contralto you hear on record, but she was either very nervous or maybe drunk. Either way, she attempted to be funny, a rock chick and deadpan raconteuse but never really managed any of the three. Halfway through her first song, Charlotte looked at me worriedly, saying "Dad, she's terrible". She's the mistress of understatement. Very strange, I thought, that she chose to cover Herman's Hermits' I'm Into Something Good and John Lennon's Working Class Hero (what possesses people to cover Lennon? Whoops, sorry Bryan). I'm Into Something Good? Working Class Hero? Is Marianne Faithful either of these things? Despite her interesting habit of adopting a mockney (fake Cockney London) accent like erstwhile muckers Jagger and Bowie, I think not... I did however enjoy her performance of The Ballad of Lucy Jordan. It wasn't a patch on the record, a song that my mother chose as a favourite on its '79 release - she always had an ironic sense of taste in morbid pop songs. But, for a while, it was like she was sitting there with Charlotte and myself, three generations of not quite right music fanatics... ;-) Towards the end of the set, some places became available on benches at the beer tables to the side of the stage. And we quickly scrambled there, allowing Charlotte an improved view of things onstage due to the slightly increased height. The site was set in woodland on the edge of Lake Geneva with coloured lights shone up into the Larch trees, as well as coloured strip lighting hung from the boughs of these great trees. Commercial sponsorship was everywhere and the VIP enclosures for sponsors were quite close to the stage, meaning that the distance from the stage to the back of the site was maybe only 50 yards. I'm no judge of numbers, but I would guess that there were maybe 5,000 people in total, but they were not all in front of the stage, even when BF was on. There were food stalls, craft shops and the like beyond the trees and the atmosphere of friendly festival time meant that not everyone was there to see the acts, it was an event in its own right. So they continued to mill about, late into the night (well after the last act Bryan Ferry, yes, I'm getting to him!). And so it was. At 10 minutes before 12, prompting me to think he might break into In The Midnight Hour, Bryan Ferry looking only half of his 56 years, came on stage in a dapper shiny dark grey suit with a white shirt (no tie - it was still way too hot, I tell you). My view at this stage allowed me to see the sax player and the three white trouser-suited female backing singers, Bryan and Chris Spedding (with occasional glimpses of Colin Good) with an ability to see Lucy Wilkins and TGPT through the banner that ran down the side of the stage. I could imagine Reecey thinking I had maybe the optimum restricted view, almost all of the female performers, the main man himself and only a couple of others. I sent the set list about which I'm almost completely sure the other day, but to recap... It's All Over Now Baby Blue Sign Of The Times Can't Let Go Oh Yeah Out Of The Blue Don't Think Twice It's All Right Both Ends Burning Dance Away Tara Slave To Love A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall Love Is The Drug Virginia Plain Jealous Guy Let's Stick Together Encore...Do The Strand Think that is about it. Yep, the two Dylan covers were the only songs from Frantic, despite a Euro single of One Way Love due anytime now. He knew he was in Switzerland. He said the word "Merci" once. And why did he release Goddess Of Love in the UK when it has been so summarily dismissed? Very strange, but I guess he's playing the same hits schedule he aimed for with Roxy last year and means to concentrate on Frantic live when he does smaller venues in the autumn. Whoever wrote to Avalon recently saying it would make sense to release another new album of self-penned material this autumn to tie in with the tour dates was dreaming. And why not? People may call others dreamers but they're not the only ones (or some such - just everyone is getting into the Lennon cover business nowadays). Mid way through, Bryan changed into a black shirt and a lighter grey dapper shiny suit while Tara played, a better version than I'd been lead to believe based on recent reports but, no, not as good as when Andy himself is there. The sax player - name escapes me - stood almost in the wings behind the singers and didn't ever come more forward than that, not even for Tara. It didn't matter where I'd been sitting, he would always have looked as though he was watching the shows from the sidelines and occasionally blowing into the horn. As has already been said, the outdoor crowd types don't know to shout "Virginia Plain" or point their arm at the end of "Do The Strand", but Charlotte and I did it anyway. Hell, they didn't even know to give TGPT the loudest cheer! After such a late start (by UK standards where music events have normally finished by 11pm), BF and band played for 1 hr 15 mins coming off stage at 1.05 in the morning. The ovation was huge but after the encore, there just was no more. As I've said, there was no big exodus for the way home as many people stayed on, drinking and dancing in the beer tents, perusing the food stalls and craft tables. But it was a late night for us Brits and we made our way to the car, getting back home in just 20 minutes again. The next day, sunshine reigned once more, cousins came over for the day and we played more cricket, took saunas, sunbathed, generally pampered ourselves, either side of the wonderful England-Denmark game. Uncanny how Christine, the Dane in our group absented herself from the proceeding by working in the Netherlands, but the result was joyously received by those that remained. Just three days, a magical break that seems like a dream now as I recount it. But as other Avalonians have demonstrated in the past, a BF gig is more than a gig, it's part of an adventure, an excuse to travel and see places and meet people and I for one hope that Bryan doesn't give up his frequent flyer club membership anytime soon. Roll on, Belvoir Castle... Ferry might date his midlife crisis back to the Mamouna days, but then, it has been a very fruitful crisis. I would agree: as 'Mamouna' is a very layered album, the vocals have been mixed in well - I think on 'Bete Noire', the voice has been much more back in the mix (e. g. 'The Right Stuff', you could call the background singers foreground singers, well, almost). The way Ferry's voice has developed is ideal for the song material on 'Mamouna', a soft, melancholy velvet croon. >BTW, Christian, I find your posts always make me think, and >that is not only evidence of your excellent English and >ability to communicate, but it also speaks of your 'deeper >than skin' thoughtfulness and, of course, your professional >grasp of music and its creation. BUTCH UP BOY!" LOL!!! Dear Roy: Your observations concerning Mr. Ferry's part is remarkable, as many here have noticed this opposing change as well. The hair seems to have taken a new part this past Spring, around the same time that Mr. Ferry was 'cosmetically fixed'. I believe this unexpected division is for esthetic purposes, an attempt to camouflage Mr. Ferry's receding hairline and thinning mane (which also explains the horse on Mamouna's jacket). No shame in that since many men and a significant percentage of women find more hair in their basins as time goes by, enough to send one deeper into their mid-life madness. But please do not despair, there are many equal and opposite reactions possible that continue to preserve universal symmetry. - My personal reaction is this: I now look at new photos of Ferry as I reflect his image in a mirror. Another Avalonian has chosen to change the side on which he parts his hair. Another now only wears black socks and drinks white label Guinness. I'm sure you will find your own balancing reaction, given time. Confidentially, I've been told the painting of Bryan Ferry that he has locked away in his attic now groans. It would seem the picture is capable of dealing with all the wrinkles, but it has no way to cope with changing parts! :) Best wishes. For years it was left-to-right, and that became the template for my generation. Can anyone determine when this change took place? It feels as though the laws of nature have made a sudden shift and I am now out of step. Some basic symmetry of the universe has been broken. Please help. There is the obvious self penned and covers on the same album but there are some others I noticed. It is only the lyrics to the originals and not the covers that are on the sleeve. These are the only 2 Ferry solo albums without a title track. J.O'B. They use the word bonus rather loosely when they mention 'I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know' as a bonus track on this 14 song version. The 13 track version everywhere else should be re-labelled as 'Frantic' with bonus omission. What did the Japanese do to deserve this? Maybe it is a new marketing strategy:- put on such a terrible track at the end and it makes the rest of the album sound like 'For Your Pleasure' I can see the headlines now:- John O'Brien In Doesn't Like A Ferry Track Shock!!!!!! I don't blame Ferry for experimenting with different genres of music. He has had the sense in the past to recognise that some of his experiments are not working and remain unreleased but how this one got the go ahead to be released commercially I will never know, especially when there is so much other quality tracks gathering dust. I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know doesn't even fit on this chameleon album of changing moods. I don't think it even makes a good extra track or b-side. At #28 for an import I would have been better buying my daughter a Crayola Colouring Set so that her next Ferry portrait will be in colour KB Porter asked me the other day if there is anything about Roxy/Ferry I don't know, well here is one: Why did he bother to record such a sh*t song so badly?? Maybe there should always be a little room for mistery... specially if the song is no good. By the way, I don't think I ever saw an album with no lyrics of the songs that the artist didn't write. I suppose it's because of the rights, but I don't know (I'd be glad if someone explained it). Anyway, it doesn't look very nice! Anyway, it doesn't look > very nice! > The only time Ferry/Roxy had the Lyrics to a cover version on the sleeve was on Flesh & Blood, the More Than This Compilation and As Time Goes By. I think there is a copyright issue and that they have to pay further duty on printing the lyrics as well as for recording the song in the first place. All the jewel case remasters have the lyrics in them for all the albums except the 2 live ones, I guess they decided to pick up the tab for the copyright on these versions. J.O'B.
