Of all Ferry solo albums, 'Mamouna' ranks as THE masterpiece for me, and it's a pity Ferry has been rather critical of it in retrospect. Even with all those wonderful layers of sound, it possesses something desperate and naked which might be reflected in the lyrics to some extent as well. Though KB, if you listen to 'Mamouna' right after 'Frantic', you should remember that the current album ends on it's most wonderful note, 'I Thought'. This song is high up in the sky with the best of 'Mamouna'. Isn't it?? Reviews/links The festival site sure is a true pittoresque one, right by the lake of the Swiss French Riviera, from where you could see last friday evening the immaculate Mont Blanc mountain at sunset. The place is not far away from Phil Collins house (hey FFFiiiiiiillll, tell those people in England how to live almost tax-free in this god-blessed land!). To put the things clear, as an early Roxy stuff fan, having seen Roxy transfixing the Swiss in '73 at Montreux Festival and aware of a deceiving Frantic (exception made of the true gem of "Don't think twice"), the concert was rather an excellent surprise. I could not believe my eyes seeing Paul Thompson on drums. Not to mention the presence of the legendary Chris "Motorbikin' Spedding on guitars, looking like an old Lester Square (from the Monochrome Set fame) with its cowboy outfit. The inclusion of "A Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall" and "Don't Think Twice" were warmly welcomed. To hear again "Do the Strand" & "Virginia Plain" so freshly performed in a so immaculate manner was a thrilling Proustian exercice: staight to the topsy-turvy years of my youth! I will never forget those precious moments. Even if I regret not having heard perfomed "A Song Of Europe" or "Bitter Sweet", 2 of my fav' ones. Maybe next time. Thank you Bryan! 'Why was Mott never filmed?' Well, there's bits and pieces, but really there was no justification for it. Not filming the Uris was a massive error on our then-manager's part as well as on Columbia records. Mott were royally screwed not by design but by stupidity. Being a successful band is only part of it. There has to be guidance and vision on a managerial level. Mott sadly lacked this therefore nothing is capitalized on - nothing saved for posterity. When you see Roxy now - we should be on that level, but nobody cared. They only looked at things from the short term. We picked the wrong people at the right time. I see some of these idiotic bands on VH1 who should never have seen the light of day in the first place sitting like elder statesmen looking at their extensive 'historical' footage. There is no doubt in my mind that "I Thought" is a high quality piece, and it is one of the top three songs from "Frantic (I haven't decided the order of the top three contenders, yet.). A listen to "Mamouna" on the heels of "Frantic", I believe, only highlights the wonderful textures, lyrics, and conveyed feelings that reside in "Mamouna". I honestly do not understood why some people think BF's voice isn't present or is too buried in Mamouna's mix. I think his vocals are perfect (and I can hear them perfectly well) for the complexity, sophistication, and emotional turbulence that I perceive is evident therein. It Is, to date, Bryan Ferry's masterpiece - his best album effort, and I think BF has gone mad to think 'where's my voice' in this work!!! This must be his mid-life crisis. Still, I hope Mr. Ferry will one day treat us to an album of original work that is akin to the superb nature of "Mamouna". BTW, Christian, I find your posts always make me think, and that is not only evidence of your excellent English and ability to communicate, but it also speaks of your 'deeper than skin' thoughtfulness and, of course, your professional grasp of music and its creation. Thank you so much for sharing your insight - I like the stimulation!!! (Yes, there are others on Avalon List who give me pause to examine, think about BF topics as well.)
