Hi Colleen, Sorry, but sending to the list seemed the only way. I posted that off-topic message because I know there are people on the list who quite like Elvis too - - I don't know who they all are so can't send individual messages to them all or go to a chat room. I'm not a member of any other mailing lists and don't know if these people are either. I would be grateful if you could suggest any other way. Unfortunately, I have no idea what the film could be, but I think this is by far the best remix on the CD single (not counting the single mix). (The 'dream' version was different though... sorry Keith, but at least I spared you my recurring dream of Ferry playing A Song For Europe and everybody leaving the venue - and anyway, I don't consider myself Mr OT). It took me some time back then to get used to the FSOL mixes, and besides, they haven't left very much of the original version, have they? That's when a remix is on the edge of becoming a new song/piece. After hearing the lengthy samples on the online "jukebox," I had mixed feelings. His voice, on some of the tracks, seemed to have a certain quality that dismayed me: the quavering, emotionally distant croon that those not of the "persuasion" find easy to make fun of. I was worried. Was it another album that would join my small "seldom-listened" pile of BF/RM? I need not have worried. I surprised myself by liking it--a lot! I am even fond of some tracks that many Avalonians deplore, such as "Goin' Down" (although his vocals _could_ sound more sincere on this track) and "Good Night Irene." I like the placement of "Goin' Down," as it echoes the vocal riff of this version of "Cruel." I find Fool for Love to be perhaps my favorite track, and "Don't Think Twice" is a stunning cover. "I Thought" is the one that most sticks in my head--a lovely closing to an album I'm surprised (happily) I like so well. I still play it while doing tasks, about once a day or every other day. I've got an "upstairs" CD and a "downstairs" SACD. The mix on both is just beautiful--I'm so appreciative that the vocals are forward in the mix. It has the ambience of a live-in-the-studio recording, not separate musicians thousands of miles apart throwing down tracks while listening to tape on headphones. I think it's a winner of an album. So many good reviews worldwide seem to bear this out. Karen BTW, on the topic of off-topic posts, they don't bother me in the least, but I _will_ try to avoid them. Sometimes the OT music posts have led to my discovering a fine artist I'd otherwise never known about. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://web.tiscali.it/cecilya/roxy/meetup.html ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Jun 2002 13:17:04 -0500 From: "paula brown" Subject: Fw: [AVALON] whither _Frantic_? > I'm really quite surprised at how little discussion there has been< "Frantic" is a great CD with some sleepers. I advise anyone who is listening to it for the first time, whether a seasoned RM/BF fan or not, that they must give it several listens before forming the final analysis. I've lived with it a few months now, and I still think, just as I did the first time I heard it, that the strongest, most classic track is "Ja Nun Hons Pris"/"Fool for Love." I don't consider that track a sleeper but a rather accessible track that nonetheless has some depth. My first impression of "Nobody Loves Me" was that it was similar to "Fool for Love" in many ways but not quite as strong and that I might tire of it, but I haven't at all. Bryan's restrained tremolo carries the song, the guitar at the end very nice as well. I put "San Simeon" and "Hiroshima" in camp together now, although "Hiroshima" was too ambient for me at first. Now it's my second favorite track, having creeped up on me in the night. I love playing it over and over when I'm driving at night. I liked the lyrics to "Cruel" and the subject matter. I was unsure about the song as a whole, but have come to like it a lot. I like the power of it and the message in it. I like that it was a departure for Ferry, that he's still breaking ground. It's hard for me to pick my third favorite song on "Frantic," but some days it's "I Thought." I love the lyrics, which are very sad and regretful, an element that is almost lost in the cheery tune. And I love the cheery tune, but I keep wondering what if the tune was more in keeping with the tone of the lyric. The lost twin. But though it haunts me, I wouldn't want to give up the signature harmonica which ends "Frantic" on such a beautifully peaceful note. Bryan's voice is still simply the best. I've seen his comments in interviews about the last decade when he now realizes he sort of disappeared in the music. Overall on "Frantic," his voice still seems restrained to some extent, certainly when compared to, say, the first Roxy, but he's come back a long way from the invisible man he became for awhile and he now seems pleasantly controlled with passion bubbling just below the surface threatening to erupt. It was never his voice that failed him, of course. There are some changes. On parts of "Frantic," ("I Thought" being one) I hear a rich duskiness so seamlessly executed it makes me catch my breath. It hasn't replaced his other voices but is an unexpected addendum to them that bring all the cliches to mind. It is a very good blend. I think we have a very good year here. It's incredible how far out ahead they do this stuff before setting it onto the public. I have a "CD Video" music video from 1986 that I got from Capitol. How long was it until those came out? One would be free to subscribe to it as well as -- or in lieu of -- the original Avalon list. The Avalon-OT list would be medium for Avalonians to discuss matters not related to RM/BF -- Elvis, David Sylvain, whatever. The original Avalon list wouldremain staunchly focused on RM/BF, and anyone posting OT material to that list would be politely redirected to Avalon-OT.
