Nicknamed the 'Record', the new format takes the form of a black vinyl disc measuring 12 inches in diameter, which must be played on a specially designed 'turntable'. "We can state with absolute certainty that no computer in the world can access the data on this disc," said spokesman Brett Campbell. "We are also confident that no one is going to be able to produce pirate copies in this format without going to a heck of a lot of trouble. This is without doubt the best anti-piracy invention the music industry has ever seen." As part of the invention's rigorous testing process, the designers gave some discs to a group of teenage computer experts who regularly use file swapping software such as Limewire and Gnutella and who admit to pirating music CDs. Despite several days of trying, none of them were able to hack into the disc's code or access any of the music files contained within it. "It's like, really big and stuff," said Doug Flamboise, one of the testers. "I couldn't get it into any of my drives. I mean what format is it? Is it, like, from France or something?" In the new format, raw audio data in the form of music is encoded by physically etching grooves onto the vinyl disc. The sound is thus translated into variations on the disc's surface in a process that industry insiders are describing as 'completely revolutionary' and 'stunningly clever.' To decode the data stored on the disc, the listener must use a special player which contains a 'needle' that runs along the grooves on the record surface, reading the indentations and transforming the movements back into audio that can be fed through loudspeakers. Even Shawn Fanning, who invented Napster, admits the new format will make file swapping much more difficult. "I've never seen anything like this," he told reporters. "How does it work?" As rumors that a Taiwanese company has been secretly developing a 12 inch wide, turntable-driven, needle-based, firewire drive remain unconfirmed, it would appear that the music industry may have, at last, found the pirate-proof format it has long been searching for. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Avalonians on tour 2002: http://web.tiscali.it/cecilya/roxy/meetup.html ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Jun 2002 00:08:01 +1000 From: "Roy Slaven" Subject: [AVALON] Ferry makes Marcus Greil's Real Life Rock Top 10 Marcus Greil's Real Life Rock Top 10 from Salon magazine currently features Frantic. By comparison to Ferry's outrageous version of Bob Dylan's "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" on "These Foolish Things" in 1973 (an album that also featured a hysterical take on Lesley Gore's "It's My Party"), new covers of Dylan's too-familiar "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" and "Don't Think Twice" seem pro forma. It can take a while to catch how noisy, how vulgar the strings and harmonica make "Baby Blue," or how cutting the instrumentation on "Don't Think Twice" to piano reaffirms what the song really is: a melody. Then a few seconds of "Ja Nun Hons Pris," credited to Richard the Lion-Hearted and sung by soprano Mary Nelson, opens onto the gorgeous "A Fool for Love," where Ferry takes the king's cloak and nobody cares. After which "One Way Love" -- a melancholy, utterly obscure single by the Drifters in 1964, slightly more prominent that same year in a bouncy version by the Paris ye-ye singer Ria Bartok -- is the sun coming out. Vulgar! Any thoughts? During the gap between Bete Noire and Taxi, I had dreamt about buying the new Bryan Ferry album quite often, and I even dreamt of a cover (sort of greenish) and a tracklist (forgot all titles). Last night I dreamt I bought the 'new Bryan Ferry CD single', four tracks on it. Strange, I thought, the title's not even on 'Frantic'. Obviously it was a promo advance copy. Although somebody told me 'no new material', I read that two of the tracks were 'I Put A Spell On You' & either 'Amazing Grace' or 'Goodnight Irene', both versions from 1991. The version of IPASOY was very slow and subdued, almost eerie. The title track (in the lyrics, strangely enough, Bryan sang about the weather in Northern Germany, amongst other things) was very complex, unlike most of the Frantic material. Atmospheric keyboards, introspective vocals, steady beat, but then later on, an almost dissonant jazzy brass part, a bit like late Talk Talk. I thought, 'How could he release this as a single and expect it to chart?' - this is what appears to have been closest to the truth... If anybody finds this release, please mail me off-list. Gee... For this part of the release, you might try (if you don't have it already) the Haunted House mix of Spell from the CD5 single. And if you can identify the film playing in the background, I'd be interested to know its title. I can't help with the song about the German weather reports (I hope it included other things, though) but could do with a return of the "atmospheric keyboards" and especially the "almost dissonant, jazzy brass part" you mention (along the lines of The Death of Me, perhaps? A wonderful track) but apparently Bryan would rather shoot himself than go back to all that, if the Making Music article on JO'B's site is to be believed. I take comfort from the knowledge that Ferry promised a quick album after Boys and Girls, and a "just myself and a guitar" album straight after Bete Noire. Think about it. They recorded it onto the format, didn't they? So it can be done, and they can't stop someone from making the equipment to do it. The labels have been reeling one format after another out for decades now, always saying the same thing, and it's never been more than 6 months before someone has a recording device out there and about 2 years before it's affordable. Record companies have all the motivation in the world for changing formats all the time, because it causes a rash of sales to people who can't bear not to be "state of the art" and have to run out and buy all their old favorites every time. They will do this for as long as they can get away with it, and I'm afraid that time may be drawing nigh, since they won't be able to tout "vastly superior sound quality" and since people are pretty happy with downloading and burning music freely, which is really throwing a cog in their wheel. Having previously worked for Sony and other parts of the industry, I admit it saddens me to some extent to see the record industry up against the wall like this, but I haven't missed the irony that the Internet has rendered labels as we've known them nearly as obsolete as the multiple formats they've foisted on the public for 30 years. But any deep veins of sympathy I have on this transition lie not with the labels, who made their own bed, and not with new artists, who have in these times some opportunities for exposure that garage bands in my day couldn't even fathom, but with established artists such as Bryan Ferry who are caught in the machinery during the reincarnation of an industry and presently have few of the advantages of having label support and will be struggling to some extent and for some time while the new industry emerges and finds its wings. I've been holding my tongue, as some of you who correspond and/or speak with me off-list know, about the amount and number of off-topic postings to the list, and have been trying to be as laid back about them as I can. At this point, however, I guess I'm going to be a bit more forthright since my requests and subtle hints seem to have missed the mark. Let me explain where I'm coming from and where I'd like this to go. This list has changed a great deal from the time I signed on 8 or so years ago. Part of that is because it has grown and that small gathering of 20 people around the tea table has become a large banquet hall. It may be hard to believe, but I used to post a lot more than I do now. So did many people who now just turn up as "blasts from the past," if at all. Some of this is because we've gotten older and our lives have gotten fuller and so we have less time. Some of us now fall asleep earlier in the evenings. Some of us have just moved on to other pursuits. And maybe for some of us it's because the list has lost some of its focus and energy. When I first got on-line in the dark ages of 14.4 modems, Lynx, and Pine, the Internet was no longer a frontier, but its towns were still sparsely settled. Because there were so few of us, and because the folks who had settled had been there so long, there was no doubt that newcomers would learn the lay of the land once they arrived. Not to do so would get you flamed, good and thoroughly. And why not? These people who'd gotten there before you had invested a lot into making things work, they were extremely intelligent, and they paid you the compliment of expecting the same level of intelligence and competence from you. (I have a dear friend, with whom I've lost contact and miss a great deal, who would tell really interesting first hand stories of Ye Olde Days.) In addition, a lot of things were taken as plain old common sense. One thing was that folks were in many cases spending their own money to propagate your message, or spending their money to download your message. So it'd better be (1) on-topic and (2) worth their time. Even as Internet access has become cheaper for many (but not all) of us, it seems logical to me that these underlying assumptions would still stand. For me, this list is a eight year *conversation*, not eight years of people standing in Speaker's Corner shouting out statements, or babbling on about themselves with no shared context. In my opinion, discussion lists are one of the most interesting things--if not the most interesting thing--to have come out of the Internet (as are newsgroups on USENET), which is why I have moonlighted at various conferences talking about subjects 100 years out of my normal scholarly timeframe, like the idea and promise of on-line community. It may mark me as old, but I still believe very strongly in both that idea and in that promise. Think about it for a moment--the list is like a huge cocktail party that goes on 24/7 and at any time you're welcome to discuss this band we all love with people from all over the world. It's amazing, isn't it? I am not an elitist. But you know, at the same time I don't feel compelled to write down and post every thought that comes into my head (this post seemingly notwithstanding ;-) ). I do not assume that everyone on the list wants to know the details of my private life or that they care what new music I've discovered or what I'm having for dinner, or that I just bought a new pair of shoes. It's not that I don't want people to get to know me, but that can be done very easily via personal information found within the context of an on-topic post or via private email--I have made many dear friends on this list via this route. And here's the proof: I've travelled internationally and transcontinentially to meet listmembers and to stay in their homes as their guests, and I've hosted them myself. Which is to say that I don't understand how staying on-topic and making friends have become mutually exclusive. Please note that this in no way cuts down on the opportunities for our new members (welcome!) to participate in the list. If you've recently joined the list, you may want to send a note to the list, introducing yourself and sharing your Roxy experiences with us. Older posters may wish to reintroduce themselves to the list or to introduce themselves to the many new folks who are among us. If you need more space to express yourself, there are chat rooms and chat lists galore out there if you feel the need to natter on about things. There is IRC and AIM. There are more options I am unaware of in which to hold off-topic and/or personal conversations. For example, private email works just fine for holding, well, private conversations. The world is your oyster, and it extends beyond the confines of this list. The Avalon list isn't the place for that, and I make no apologies for feeing this way or for expecting people to show the same respect to the list community that they expect to be shown in return. Now let's get this straight: I'm not asking for long intellectual treatises on the meaning of the past perfect subjunctive in Ferry lyrics (although I probably wouldn't turn my nose up at one). What I would like to see is more substantive, on-topic posting. The rule against off-topic postings exists to prevent spamming and endless discussions of irrelevant topics. This list used to be a very intimate affair but it is less so now, and so self-restraint and mutual respect are essential. I've seen too many of my favorite newsgroups and mailing lists become general, catch-all ersatz chatrooms. In many of these on-line spaces it is simply now too much work to wade through the dross which permeates all of their boundaries. Yes, we are a community, and yes, of course, I want to get to know the other Avalonians as much as any of you do. But ideally that knowledge would be gleaned via the reason we are all here: our shared love of the music. Please note: as old-timers will tell you, this doesn't rule out having fun and bending the rules in order to do so. But it does ask that folks think before they post about the appropriateness of their message. That much really hasn't changed since the tracks of the Internet were laid. Please also note that this isn't to say that rousing and interesting off-topic discussions don't (or shouldn't) naturally evolve out of on-topic posts. But please go back and look again at the genesis of those off-topic posts. An off-topic discussion which grows out of an on-topic one can be useful and illuminating, and I have a fair amount of tolerance that animal. But if you are putting "OT" in your subject header, or apologizing for starting an off-topic thread, or responding to an off-topic thread, I would suggest that it would be better addressed to an address other than "avalon@smoe.org." I welcome your thoughts and comments, either privately or via the list. Thanks for listening to mine.
