M http://www.canada.com/halifax/aroundtown/story.asp?id={A5885D2F-F399-4BF9-BE E6-9A83F55590A5} Ferry rediscovers own singing style By RON FOLEY MACDONALD Bryan Ferry - Frantic (Virgin/EMI) - ----- Roxy Music frontman Bryan Ferry sure takes his time making new albums. His latest release, Frantic (on Virgin/EMI) is only his fourth collection of (mostly) new material under his own name since Roxy Music dissolved as a recording band after their landmark 1982 album Avalon. It's a good thing, then, that Ferry's work is almost always worth the wait. Last year, the suave English singer released a marvelous collection of '30s and '40s standards that returned him to prominence. As Time Goes By also saw Bryan Ferry move away from the heavy, atmospheric dance textures he's favoured since the '80s to pursue a more straightforward, organic sound that featured acoustic instrumentation and a direct emotional approach to his material. That approach comes full circle on Frantic. The 13 selections - seven original songs and six covers - see Bryan Ferry reaching back to his avant-rock and art-pop origins to make an album that neatly balances content and style. Like Roxy Music's early releases, Frantic's rampant eclecticism samples various pop styles, from the chugging retro take on Bob Dylan's It's All Over Baby Blue to the spacey pop of San Simeon and Goddess Of Love to the straightforward pop of One Way Love. At this late stage in his career, Bryan Ferry seems to have rediscovered the joy of his own peculiar singing style. On albums like Bete Noire and Boys And Girls, he would often bury his vocals under a mountain of slick production. Last year, As Time Goes By's austere sound revealed a new twist in Ferry's often remote approach to vocalization. Instead of the ironic and distant style he affected ever since Roxy Music's startling first album, Ferry adopted a direct, slightly scratchy sound that, strangely, makes his voice sound much younger. Gone is the world-weary persona that so influenced all those '80s techno bands. Bryan Ferry has re-invented himself as a forthright, direct and very emotive artist who seems very much engaged with his material. And the material on Frantic is very good indeed. Fool For Love, for example, is a cool pop offering that riffs off of Sam Shepard's famous play of the same name. Sparked by Chris Spedding's sharp guitar lines and Ferry's own poignant harmonica playing, it's as strong as any of his previous work. While a couple of the cover songs would seem strangely obvious - Leadbelly's Goodnight Irene and Dylan's Don't Think Twice - they actually help build up the album's emotional authenticity. And with collaborations with Eurythmic Dave Stewart (Nobody Loves Me) and Brian Eno (I Thought), Frantic still manages to retain a sleek, slightly futuristic sonic sheen. Let's just hope we don't have to wait eight years for Bryan Ferry's next masterpiece. ) Copyright 2002 The Daily News ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Jun 2002 17:51:42 +0100 From: "Rob Whiteford" Subject: Re: [AVALON] 2001 ALBUM ? The program itself is called "Murcia, !qui hermosa eres!" (literally, "Murcia, how beautiful you are!", and, yes, it does sound ridiculous). The thing is that a small city facing the Mediterranean sea (Murcia) is celebrating its jubilee, and part of the celebration will be tonight's concert. Bryan Ferry will be the only artist whose participation won't be a sounding nightmare; all the rest are national teen idols who will hopefully soon be forgotten (sorry if I sound cruel, but none of you would be able to listen to a Spanish radio station without losing all your faith in world's moral progress). The stage will probably be nice, as the concert is held at the Cathedral's square; you see, in Spain we've got plenty of cathedrals, and for those interested, the one in Murcia is 100% baroque. I don't know wether he'll sing one or two songs, I'll repport later. Anyway, I'm glad I'll see him on tv, I would have missed it another time if a friend of mine hadn't phoned me. Let's hope his performance will lighten up this sad and cold sunday. Moral progress has its place but it interferes with my enjoyment of radio. BTW, Londonders: I found a copy of More For Your Pleasure (the Roxy Music tribute) the other day in Tower Recods, Piccadilly Circus, for a fiver. There were quite a few copies left. Low on moral progress (bands include the Dead Jerry Halls and Clit Richards) but high on laughs ;) It even has the correct track order now, which I understand wasn't the case with earlier copies. Just wondering - does anyone here exercise to any RM/BF songs? If so, which ones? Once in awhile, I'll do my crunches and abs exercises to "Goddess of Love" altho' I have to do the alternating left/right crunches faster to stick to the pace. Yesterday, I tried running to RM. Didn't do it for me and I'm not keen on running either. I probably have to listen to something like Kylie Minogue. I can only do my arm exercises to some of Kylie's songs on the "Impossible Princess" album. Off to... certainly not bask in the sun. Tans BAD. However, it has been a great relief, as this show was only suitable for die-hard murcianos: shortly before Bry's appearance, there have been lots of folkloric dances, messages adressed to the public by the regional authorities and all this interesting stuff. I was mistaken, and the venue wasn't in front of the cathedral, it was in a small village called Caravaca de la Cruz, surely one of the most glamourous places on earth (I wake up in Chang Mai, Caravaca mon amour). BF was wearing the usual black suit, and a white shirt; he forgot the tie at home and Caravaca is no good place to buy Charvet's fine silks. He was surrounded by two local dancers (maybe the only reason to travel that far, I didn't know murcianas were so good looking, or maybe they were two "English roses" he had brought). At the end, as the masses were clapping, very glad to know about Bryan Ferry for the first time in their lifes, Bryan said "thank you!", and then he tried a very convincing "gracias!" (he can also say "patio", as listened on Frantic, and maybe even "siesta"). After the "gracias", he said thanks again, and as he was walking away, the people who were guiding the show had the nice and usual words about Bryan's elegance and art, and how good it is to have him in Murcia. Maybe the most important moral lesson of it all is the fact that you can't always play at the Olympia or the Royal Albert Hall, you sometimes have to be a prophet in the desert. Stubbs" Subject: [AVALON] Translation of Portugal Show Review Hi. Here is a translation from Portuguese of the Estoril Casino show ... although I learned Brazilian Portuguese, which is a little bit different ... - - Ronald Stubbs Music: the charm of a veteran by NUNO GALOPIM With raised arms, saying the last goodbye, giving a smile (which he had during the entire show), Bryan Ferry left the Preto and Prata staage of the Estoril Casino on a high. An hour and a half of songs with history and a great stage presence showing great form assured the dignified return of one of the most celebrated singers in the history of pop to a Portuguese stage. In spite of frequent personal visits and of timely promotional campaigns for his record releases, Bryan Ferry had not performed in front of a Portuguese crowd since 1994. That visit to us was the memorable show in the Coliseu dos Recreios, where the night was divided between recent songs from Mamouna and a series of vintage memories from the 70s. This time, eight years later, Ferry returned to clearly insist on the "keyness" of the 70s. Of the 17 songs comprising the very strong line-up of the concert, ten of them were diverse picks from the 70s, among them songs recorded on solo Ferry discs and the inevitable classics of Roxy Music. Curiously, from the recent Frantic (an album clearly bearing the mark of memories of the 70s), he performed only three numbers. They were It's All Over Now (Baby Blue) - a version of an original by Bob Dylan included in the album which was finished only a few weeks ago, with which Ferry opened the evening. Aslo from Frantic he performed Don't Think Twice (another Dylan tune, a magnificent exercise for voice, piano and harmonica) and Fool for Love. The meat of the concert was made-up, thus, by memories, many of them found in the deepest collections of the "live" past of Roxy Music. Virginia Plain, Do The Strand, Love Is The Drug, Out Of The Blue, Both Ends Burning... Among them, songs from Ferry solo albums crossed paths with those memories: Sign of the Times, Can't Let Go, Let's Stick Together, Hard Rain's Gonna Fall (still another from Dylan's "quill") From the batch of the 80s, there was still time for evoking Oh Yeah, Jealous Guy (Lennon original, one of the largest ovations of the night), Dance Away, Slave to Love (the most applauded of these)... Whenever two of the back-up singers would assume the role of dancers in the back of the stage, the show was transported to the glamour that always characterized the covers of Roxy Music albums. In great form, Bryan Ferry was the man in front of a complete band, which wasn't lacking for virtuosity in the violinist and a guitarist who was a curious cross between stereotypical rockabilly and a pose of David Lynch in a western outfit. In the room where the formalities were convened, the intensity which Ferry brought to the show (and they say that the set-list in the Casino Estoril has the same as that of his present tour) obligated many to leave their seats and give themselves up to dancing, more than anything the majestic ending of the set. The desire for "more" hung in the air. Maybe next year, in a possible second tour of reunited Roxy Music, and, why not, in a large hall in Lison? ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Jun 2002 16:45:41 -0500 From: "Mr Avalon" Subject: RE: [AVALON] weather/exercise music Mister Avalon REGRETS tO inFORM ALL AvalONIONS that HE didn't understand what this sPOOf was SPooFInG Thank YOU and gOOD NigHT _____________________________________________ Free email with personality!
