On Goddess, he has the "new" Ferry sound, but on >Hiroshima, his voice sounds very robust, very much in "I Put a Spell on You" >form. So, is his voice changing, or is it just the way he records it? If one listens to Bjte Noire (the track), it already sounds almost as soft and breathy as it does on ATGB &c. Although it certainly has grown softer over the years (though much of the typical phrasing has remained), it is partly due to the way it's being recorded: very 'close' to the ear on the ATGB ballads and Don't Think Twice, less so on other tracks. If you want to have the maximum effect of the sound of a voice VERY close to the listener, listen to records by swedish singer Stina Nordenstam, and you might think she's sitting in your lap whilst singing. Carol quietly wrote: "... who hears more depth of emotion in his voice than ever before on "Frantic"? I can't stop listening, it all sounds so intense to me. Even "Goodnight Irene." Bryan Ferry's voice is still wonderful and texturally rich. I enjoy every song on Frantic, although I have personal favorites. I prefer earlier versions of some of the pieces on another work that had surfaced. But every tune on this album is with merit, and when isolated, each piece gains even more! However, as an album, Frantic's 'eclectic' nature really is too deranged and it poorly flows in order for me to totally enjoy the album as an integral whole. I do like the 'cross-over' nature of "I Thought", I believe it could do very well on Country Music stations as well as Easy Listening radio stations - if played. "One Way Love" could do well on Retro or Oldies-type Music stations - if played. "Goodnight Irene"'s appeal could reach into various branches of Folk, Cajun, Irish Country, and "Goin' Down" might do very well on Blues radio.... -if played. ... If played. These things don't sell themselves. In a world exclusive, he revealed his process for determining setlists. "There isn't much deliberation," he admitted. "I used to labor over it for countless hours because I wanted it to be perfect. I've done that too many times now and got fed up. Fans complain no matter what you choose so I may as well make it easier on myself. Then, I decide on the first and last songs and let my sons decide the rest of the order. It makes them feel important. "I don't know. My tour manager puts up a map on a wall and throws darts at it to determine concert locations. I bought mine in the HMV shop on 5th Avenue on Saturday..it was in the rack right by the door as you come in..very prominent position. I have not been much of a fan of Ferry's solo work over the years compared to Roxy, just odd tracks here and there in his post Avalon solo years, but I must say I quite like Frantic in that it has more than just the one or two tracks which I repeat play . I think that it was KBP that said the eclectic mix makes it lack flow and then offered up some music syles that might best be homes for some of the tracks.I was thinking the same way about the different styles but more in how some of them fit into various Roxy or Ferry eras. Currently, I think that " I Thought " is the best track on the album and for me it fits in style wise somewhere around For Your Pleasure ..I could easily imagine the album playing out to this track. but alongside FYP maybe there would not be enough room for another of this type. The other track that sounds more "Roxy" Goddess of Love..which sounds a bit " Sirenesque"...part of it still sounds like Just Another High to me. Cruel ( which makes a good dance track ) and Nobody Loves Me, are more like the style played out by Ferry in solo albums post Avalon. As to some that don't, I think that Dire Straits appear on Fool for Love surely..and sorry Goodnight Irene just gets skipped..ugh!!! Where do San Simeone and Hiroshima fit into this..style/eclectic mix or eras? ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V7 #184 **************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
