Showbiz: http://www.canoe.ca/JamAlbumsF/ferry_bryan_frantic-sun.html Ferry delivers the goods By JANE STEVENSON Toronto Sun - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ---- FRANTIC Bryan Ferry (Virgin) - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ---- For this solo disc, in stores Tuesday, Ferry offers up some of his best new songs in years, unusual covers and a stellar guest list. On the plus side are the beat-driven Cruel, Goddess Of Love and Nobody Loves Me -- Ferry's songwriting collaborations with sometime Eurythmics guitarist Dave Stewart -- although the duo falters on the slower and melodramatic San Simeon. Former Roxy Music keyboardist Brian Eno also resurfaces, playing and singing on Goddess Of Love and I Thought, which he co-wrote, while Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood makes his presence felt on the heavily textured and striking new Ferry song Hiroshima. Back on board too is co-producer Rhett Davies (Roxy Music's Avalon, Ferry's As Time Goes By), and his elegant and restrained production -- with Ferry and pianist Colin Good -- goes a long way. On the minus side are Ferry's covers of Bob Dylan's It's All Over Now, Baby Blue and Don't Think Twice, It's All Right. The polished singer sounds like he's trying to mimic Dylan's odd nasal inflections and the combination, while hardly embarassing, just doesn't work. Same goes for the Don Nix blues standard Goin' Down and the Leadbelly classic Goodnight Irene, which simply require more grit and soul. Ferry does better with his interpretation of the medieval Ja Hun Hons Pris, written by Richard The Lionheart, which leads into the pretty new ballad A Fool For Love. (More on Bryan Ferry) Track Listing 1. It's All Over Now Baby Blue 2. Cruel 3. Goin Down 4. Goddess Of Love 5. Don't Think Twice (It's Alright) 6. Nobody Loves Me 7. Ja Hun Hons Pris 8. If you got there very early you could get a great view from the railings on Princes Street itself. The gardens themselves are in full bloom, and the castle backdrop will be stunning. You might have heard Ms Jones perform on a recent edition of Later (Jools Holland's show), a week or two after Ferry appeared on it. More likely, you've heard her sing More Than This with the Charlie Hunter Trio. It's on their album Songs from an Analog Playground and it was hearing about that Ferry cover on this list (thank you, dkellergrl (?)/ dimples (?)) - that led me to her own album. I'm rarely a fan of albums like these (quite the opposite) but at least one or two of these songs are special right from the first time you hear them. Providing a few of the best moments is the title song itself, which the singer wrote. Her performance of More Than This isn't the best example of her style but again, it has a certain something. Before we go any further, here's the trite journalistic angle (was working as a waitress, "just give it a shot", everyone speechless, everyone mesmerized). Norah was hunted down at the Midtown restaurant where she was working as a waitress. Arriving at the studio and meeting the musicians, Norah was given the lyric of a song written by Bryan Ferry entitled "More Than This." Never before seeing these words, let alone knowing the song, Norah was asked to just give it a shot. After getting a feel for the song, she began to sing, the band playing behind her. At song's end, Norah timidly asked if that was "okay". For a minute, everyone in the room remained speechless, mesmerized by Norah's radiant essence. Unanimously, it was decided that yes, it was in fact okay. See the following for samples, reviews, radiant essence, etc. B PS Wish I could remember the name of the Ice T track, J O'B. Loved the song, regretted not buying it - but only after it had left the charts. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 May 2002 19:27:35 -0700 From: "David Firmin" Subject: Re: [AVALON] It doesn't look good for America Whatever. It's a relief to me. They charge too much over here and the set list isn't that great. That's ok, but man, please, somebody in Bryan's camp must read this. Bryan, you can't have too many tours left! Throw caution to the wind! Give us Tokyo Joe, It's My Party, 2HB, The "In" Crowd, and so many others! Man, Sympathy for the Devil! These Foolish Things - and above all else, You Go To My Head (Where was that on the ATGB tour?). This is a BRYAN FERRY Tour, not a Roxy Tour! As much as I love Roxy, Bryan, you are a stud on your own! Grab those cajones and lets see some spark!!!! Especially with Spedding at your side. Just my humble opinion as a 25 year Roxy/Bryan fan. Brian Now back to your regularly scheduled Avalon list... ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V7 #181 **************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
