I think it did run it's course. There was disagreements within the group, I've understood. Jobson said to me, while on tour with Jethro Tull, that he wanted to be a soloartist with a group that was merely backing musicians to him. But he is not as good of a writer as Ferry. The fact that Phil Manzanera has not spoken to Jobson in eight or nine years pretty much excluded Jobson from the Roxy reunion. Manzo insisting on TGPT, but Jobson were as essential as the bass players it seams. A shame, I've always liked Jobson. NP Ben Harper, Strawberry Fields Forever (what a brave man!) Flight to Esbjerg. Had to go over a day early, as the flight times on the day of the first gig (24th) left very little room for error, time wise, and I certainly didn't want to miss the beginning of the opener. So, first time in Denmark, and little-known Esbjerg is the port of call. Nice little town, and spent most of the evening in a little bar close to the hotel, where a local Band were playing, doing covers of mainly 60s and 70s hits, with the odd rock Album track thrown in. You know the score - Substitute, All Day And All Of The Night, Blockbuster et all... No Roxy/Ferry songs I'm afraid. They were pretty good actually, with a very good guitarist, the only black mark being that he did insist on doing those face-altering solos in nearly every song. I didn't know guitarists still did that. Friday 24 May 02 : Odense Up bright and early (ok then, 10.30), too late for breakfast (though about 6 cups of coffee and 5 cigarettes usually suffices - and did) and a quick last look round Esbjerg, then off to the airport once again to meet up with Mr O'Brien. In he marches through customs, wearing a 'Roxy Music 2001' T-shirt. Did he think I wouldn't recognise him ? We exchanged the usual pleasantries, "The Eagle Flies North To Gdansk", and "How Ya Doin' Ya Northern B******d" amongst them. It's the Avalonian 'code' you see, so we know we've got the right person. Perfect timing for the train through to Odense, though we did get turfed out of our seats at one point, by 2 typically stunning, slender Danish Blondes, who had reservations for exactly where we were seated. We didn't complain. Absolute true gentlemen we were, apart from what we said about them when they were out of earshot, which was little to do with seats or trains. Odense is a splendid little town, and so damn clean - as was just about everywhere we saw in Denmark. My my, it puts London to shame. We discovered an internet cafe next door to our hotel, perfect for reporting back later, on the first gig. So, on to Den Fynske Landsby, about 6 miles south of the town of Odense. This is where it all gets quite strange. Bryan playing in a little park ? Yep. What a beautiful setting though. Room for about 1000, maybe 1200 at the most, all sitting on a semi circular hill about 30 feet from the stage, except for a little flat part at the bottom where you could lean up against a bundle of rocks and a grass verge - and that was the stage, don't ya know. Both myself and John were amazed to see that the crowd were mainly taking the 'seats' on the outer fringes, and not at the front. So, straight down to the verge, as it were, right to the front, leaning against the rocks (makes a change from a metal barrier) and with no intention of shifting an inch. As darkness fell, the crowd grew impatient, and a little before 9pm, on marched the Band. Katie, Sarah, Anna and Julia resplendent and shimmering in all-white, Lucy in glammy silvery strides, and Speddo a-la Roxy tour. Mick and Mark looked much more your 'Rock Band' types, and of course Colin, Robert, and TGPT were rather hidden by their equipment, if you'll excuse the expression. No doubt you'll see the pics from the gigs, from Sunday night onwards, on vivaroxymusic.com. No lingering teasing long stroll onstage from Bryan this time, a quick march on as 'Baby Blue' began, and the Frantic Tour 2002 was up and running... (continued...) Reecey... Baby Blue started it all off, and we were straight into Sign Of The Times, a nice surprise to hear that, and it sounded so powerful, too. Then the bloody heavens opened. It didn't matter, it was just so good to be at the first gig, and right at the front to see it all unfold. Into Can't Let Go, followed by Oh Yeah. As the rain became a positive torrential downpour, we squelched on through Goddess Of Love, and into the normally marvellous Out Of The Blue. The sound wasn't quite right for this, Lucy's violin being far too distant in the mix, unfortunately. Tell tale signs abound that there were a few first night nerves around, but to be honest that just added to the charm of the evening in this setting. A return to the new Album followed, with Don't Think Twice It's Alright, Ja Nun Hons Pris, and an excellent Fool For Love. A blistering Both Ends Burning followed, powered on by TGPT. What a difference the great man makes. Then on to Tara, which, I must say, didn't work at all well in the outdoor setting. Something of a surprise, as this was a real fave of mine from the Roxy Tour, but this just didn't seem to gel at all. Hey, first night and all that... This track may have suffered as there was no direct 'focal point', as Robert and Lucy are on complete opposite sides of the stage, and audience attention wandered. I guess if this was done a-la Andy and Lucy from the last tour, with both being in close proximity, this could work a lot better. Having said that, it's not really an 'outdoor song', if you know what I mean. I hope it gels on the autumn indoor gigs, no reason why it shouldn't. A strange few moments followed, as Bryan failed to return to the stage at the correct point, so Robert and Lucy started up Tara again, for a minute or so. Then the Band introductions - the biggest cheer going up for Lucy. And hey Bryan, you didn't mention TGPT ! The pace heated up again with Hard Rain (apt, that) and the version was true to the one heard on the outdoor gigs from ATGB 2000. I'd love to hear this 'live' with all the verses intact on this tour... Slave To Love followed, then Kiss And Tell, where TGPT lost half his drumkit, and Bryans Mic fell to bits. Hey, they're human ! The roadies were so intent on fixing up TGPT's kit, that Bryan just calmly stood out front, and put the Mic back together mid-song himself, grinned, rolled his eyes upwards, and carried on. Dance Away followed, and we were into hitsville. Jealous Guy, Let's Stick Together (Julia on yelps !), and they were gone. Back for Love Is The Drug, and Do The Strand. Plenty of first night technicalities to iron out, of that there was no doubt, but it was a real pleasure to be there, in such a setting. One point though - is this another Tour too soon ? Time will tell. Roxy last year is still so fresh in the mind, especially with the DVD only coming out weeks ago. It doesn't feel like a 'different tour' as yet, especially taking into account the amount of similar personnel, though I guess it will in time, as the set changes. The other point of view counteracts this, of course - would we want it any other way ? We've got TGPT back, we've got Lucy, and after getting used to five year gaps between anything, suddenly we're all thrust into Tour after Tour. Hey, we can't have it both ways. A quick chat with Stefan, Markus and Miriam after the gig, and one of the nicest surprises was to come, as myself and John were offered a lift back into town on the Tourbus, as we'd travelled such a long way, and found ourselves, post gig, many miles from our hotel. The Band probably all wanted to see what 2 Scottish drowned rats looked like too, and they certainly did. Really nice to chat with all and sundry on the bus about anything and everything, and I'd like to pass on eternal thanks for that, to the powers that be. Particularly fascinating to be seated opposite Katie and Anna to hear what they had to say, as they were the 'new girls', in a sense. All out for sustinence and beer afterwards (sorry, that should be the other way around) and a fine night was had by all. Some time later, nipped in to the net cafe, to file the odd report or two, and back to the hotel in the early hours for coffee and late night phone calls to pass on all the gig news, too. Time to grab some sleep, and move on again. Jelling Musikfestival tomorrow... (continued)... Reecey... We were going to go off early to Jelling, but decided instead to explore Odense a bit more, before moving on. Great town. Next up, Odense to Vejle, and the real crashing disappointment of not being turfed out of our seats by anyone. Vejle was a shock - picture this : walking through the town centre, 5pm on a Saturday, and every shop was closed. Every single one. We thought we were the only people alive, it was so strange, a ghost town. This was the nearest town we could get to Jelling, re accommodation. The festival site was about 10 miles away. It took minutes, luckily, to find our hotel. I really don't know who decorated the interior, but they needed a good slap. Recently redone, by someone who thought that the cheapest tat from 1959 was chic. Everything was bloody pink. It was vile. We didn't spend long in there. I went out on a cigarettes / crisps / any sort of damn food hunt, and it took 35 minutes before I found a shop that was open. It didn't bode well. Little did we know then how it would all change later. Off to find the buses running to and from the Festival site, and on the way spotted 'Charly's Bar', proudly proclaiming they would be open until 2am later that night. A sign of life ! Hmmm, later, I thought. There were so, so many seemingly going to the Festival just to see Bry. His name could be heard amongst the excited Danish chatter on the Bus, many times. At the Site, thousands of people, and a lot of mud. Three main stages, about half a mile apart, with a million beer, food and various stalls in between. The first stage was on our left, and we made straight for it, as a Band had just finished, and people were streaming away for refreshment. Eagle eyes at the ready, and we saw Bryans roadies appear, and Julia's paraphernalia and Lucy's violins brought out. Great ! Right at the front, centre, with just an hour to wait. Timed to perfection, though it was a fluke. It soon filled up behind us, and we met up with Stefan once again. Let me tell you, what a difference 24 hours makes. This Band was almost unrecognisable from the night before. Brimming with power and confidence, up for it, and tight as hell. A few little changes to the Set with songs moved around, Goddess Of Love taken out in favour of a slightly longer Let's Stick Together, and Lucy's violin solo on OOTB soaring through the night, with the sound balance just right. Bryan camping it up, thoroughly enjoying himself, even allowing himself to get numerous fits of the giggles in the middle of songs. Mick, Speddo and Mark really gelled, and TGPT held it in place like glue (as ever). And Bry remembered to give him his mention this time ! The loudest cheer of the night, naturally. Just as 'Paul Thompson' though, dropping 'The Great'. Hey, that'll have to change... But this was a world away from the previous night. Everything came together beautifully, and they really enjoyed themselves up there, which of course was transmitted right down through the crowd. We left immediately afterwards, said our goodbyes to Stefan, and went hunting for the special Festival bus service to take us back to Vejle. An hour or so to wait, and we were off, and found ourselves deposited in a part of town quite unrecognisable to what we'd seen earlier (still no-one around, though !). Found a petrol station to ask for directions, and headed for what we thought may be the only sign of life around, the aforementioned Charly's Bar. But, unbeknown to us, the Ferry night really was far from over... (continued...) Reecey... Hardly anyone in, and got chatting to the proprietor (funnily enough, Charly himself) who was fascinated to hear about the gig, as he desperately wanted to attend to see Bryan Ferry, but was unable to get someone to cover for him. So, he had to work instead. I don't know how, but we always seem to find a Ferry fan somewhere, someplace, no matter where in the world. It's like a magnet. Happens every time. Doubles of Jack Daniels ordered swiftly, and Charly immediately put Roxy CDs on, loud, throughout the Bar which cheered up a few people as they'd just watched Denmark come bottom in the Eurovision Song Contest. This was more like it ! We gave him a full review of both the gigs, and the Bar began to quickly fill up, with people arriving back in town from the Festival. We had a good look through all the pics taken that night, on the screen of John's camera, to which Charly decided he wanted copies, and promptly slapped some more free JDs down in front of us as an incentive. It was turning into one of those nights which only happen on Ferry/Roxy tour occasions abroad, yet again. Then it just got better. Two girls came in from the gig, minidiscs in hand, of the nights proceedings. Straight on they went, and a load of us were chatting, drinking, and listening to the gig on the speakers, very loudly singing (?) along. Absolutely marvellous. Then Stefan, driving home in search of sustinence, happened on the Bar. He didn't know we were in there, never mind that he could relive the gig ! Then, we all scanned through the pics he had taken too. This all went on for a while, as you can imagine. A great end to a great weekend - and that's the way it seems to happen in the Ferry/Roxy scheme of things - unplanned little parties springing up, it doesn't matter where or when. It's happened in recent times in places as far apart as London, Rotterdam, New York, and now Vejle. 'The Roxy Effect' we named it previously, and it was all happening again. If everyone else has a tenth of the fun we had in those couple of nights, on the forthcoming gigs, you'll have a ball, and it goes to prove yet again, it's not just about the gigs only. They were but 3 hours in total, out of an adventure that began on Thursday, and ended on Sunday. Hopefully there will be a few more unplanned get togethers just like this over the next few months with similar results, no matter where they may be, or whoever you are. What was half expected to be a quiet couple of warm up gigs to begin, turned out very nicely to be a couple of evenings frantic in Denmark. See you on the Tour, another time, another place. Reecey... If only.... The Pet Shop Boys were part of the Weekend Today summer concert series that takes place Saturday mornings in Rockefeller Plaza at 7AM. Although I've loved the PSB for over 15 years, I honestly couldn't be bothered to get my butt out of bed that early yesterday. Keanu Reeves was once supposed to be interviewed on the Today Show and you bet I was out the door by 6AM. He ended up post-taping his interview. If any Roxy fans in Sydney see Keanu, please kidnap him for me. I was thinking about who would get me out the door that early in the morning. It would be cool if Bryan could be a part of that concert series. It doesn't seem likely tho' so I may as well banish the thought from my head. After reading about the Denmark shows and seeing the pictures (thanks for sharing!!!), the fall/winter seems so far away. M http://www.canoe.ca/JamMusic/may25_sue-ap.html Industry sues Napster-like Audiogalaxy LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The recording and music publishing industries extended their legal pursuit of online music swapping firms on Friday, suing Audiogalaxy for copyright infringement. The Recording Industry Association of America and the National Music Publishers Association accused the Austin, Tex., firm of "wilfully and intentionally" encouraging and facilitating millions of users to copy and distribute copyright work of artists, ranging from Dave Matthews and Celine Dion to Alicia Keyes and the Beatles. The two industry groups that filed the suit Friday claim that Audiogalaxy, with more than 15 million registered users, uses a system that is even more egregious than Napster, which the music industry effectively shut down in the courts last year. Founder Michael Merhej and other AudioGalaxy officials did not immediately return calls placed to their offices late Friday afternoon. Merhej said previously that AudioGalaxy was taking measures to prevent copyrighted music from being illegally shared, but RIAA officials complained that the measures were insufficient. Audiogalaxy, which grew out of a music search engine at the University of Texas, not only allows users to download songs and albums, but also cover artwork and software. The firm uses some 430 computer servers as a hub for users to trade through, providing a huge database that lists thousands of available songs, their file size and download speeds. In their claim filed late Friday in a New York federal court, the plaintiffs said billions of copyrighted works may have been downloaded illegally. The company reported more than 1.5 billion monthly hits in November, and makes money by selling online advertising and subscriptions for access to premium services. At first, I felt kind of smug, knowing that while the UK edition was now out in stores, available for about half the price of the Japanese import version, I was awaiting a much greater pleasure. The German single and the UK single both came and went, leaving me untroubled because the extra track on both was one of the tracks I was waiting for on my Japanese all-encompassing treasure. But on Saturday, the day it arrived, I read on the official site a 'clarification' that there is only the one extra track and it's NOT the extra track on the single... So all that time of abstinence, all that extra money and I still have to invest in the UK single to get Smoke Dreams. Hmph! As Colleen also said (although I imagined a tongue firmly in cheek), what they will not do to get you to buy duplicate versions of the same items! I am glad to say it's a great album and I do like the extra song "I've forgotten more than you'll ever know" a lot...unlike many Avalonians, I absolutely love Ja Huns Non Pris. And while I liked the TV performance of Goodnight Irene (and I like the song), I can only now see why people with the album don't like the album version, the backing takes some getting used to. Goddess of Love really IS Hungry Like The Wolf; Don't Think Twice really IS Streets of London... Wow, I feel like a Bryan Ferry virgin all over again, discovering the joys of an album so many already take for granted. Perhaps we should all take a vow of abstinence when a new CD we've been looking forward to for years is released, just so we enjoy it all the more when the lie about the Japanese CD is finally uncovered... Can't say I'm TOO surprised. I went in to my local store on Saturday and found the single no longer displayed on the new release wall display and filed away in a rack in plentiful supply - no sign of there having been any takers. Sad but true...but hasn't it ever been thus? Ah yes, there in fact once was a time...
