In Sunday's Book Review: "Shakey" by Jimmy McDonough ======================================================= "Back when," writes Rick Moody, Neil Young "was the absinthe drinker of rock 'n' roll, the Victorian consumptive, the fur trapper, the Indian guide." Moody, the author of "The Black Veil," calls the new biography of Young by the music writer Jimmy McDonough "exhaustive, quarrelsome and sometimes maddening." Moody writes, "The majority of McDonough's biography concerns the incredibly fertile musical period in Young's life between the appearance of the first Buffalo Springfield album, in 1966, and the 1979 release of 'Rust Never Sleeps,' the incendiary album recorded with the minimalist garage- rock specialists Crazy Horse." He says "there are revelations in abundance in McDonough's version of this spree of accomplishment." But Moody says that "when 'Shakey' is less concerned with music, it loses its way." Moody appreciates the "exhaustive research" but "the difference between the lean and approachable biography we might have had and the windy one before us is to be found in the inclusion of lengthy interviews," which Moody describes as "hysterical, even a little shrill." "A biography as provocational and embittered as this one often is," concludes Moody, "can only induce us to side with the subject himself, at the expense of biographer and book." http://www.nytimes.com/2002/05/26/books/review/26MOODYT.html?rd=hcmcp?p=0439jD04 39jK441YI012000mIlFHIlAF Audio Rick Moody discusses excerpts from the music of Neil Young. http://www.nytimes.com/audiopages/2002/05/26/books/audio-young.html?rd=hcmcp?p=0 439j00439jK441YI012000mIlFHIlAF ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 May 2002 10:27:38 +0200 From: Daniel Atterbom Subject: Re: [AVALON] no postings At 15.57 -0400 2-05-24, M wrote: >Photosensitive? This way when a nasty bug or worm is about to hit your address book it starts at the beginning with AAA and is stopped right away because it does not recognize AAA as a valid contact and therefore cannot proceed. It doesn't help that he's such a perfectionist. Still, the suave Roxy Music singer also happens to be a stellar cover artist - respecting the song, but re-inventing it. He does that elegantly on ''Frantic'' with, among others, Bob Dylan's ''It's All Over Now Baby Blue'' and ''Don't Think Twice, It's All Right.'' This time out, though, Ferry penned or cowrote seven of the 13 tracks. His collaborators include onetime Roxy synthesist (and former foil) Brian Eno, ex-Eurythmic Dave Stewart, and Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood. Love is still the drug, as ''Goddess of Love,'' ''Nobody Loves Me,'' ''Fool for Love,'' and ''One Way Love'' suggest rather strongly. ''Frantic'' (a misnamed disc if any ever was) is seductive and sinuous, even spooky in places. Ferry infuses a little bit of country and a little bit of blues into his lush art-rock sonic architecture, which seems less layered than usual; his melodies are more memorable than many in his post-Roxy life. (Roxy, which toured last year, may be over; it may just be on hiatus.) ''Frantic'' is a haunting, sublime effort, with ''San Simeon'' - inspired by ''Citizen Kane'' and built on the Roxy classic ''In Every Dream Home a Heartache'' - a standout. Ferry's time was well-spent here; your time will be, too. ''Frantic'' is the kind of disc that gives the term ''adult rock'' a positive spin. Here's the review (I can't find it on the website): Any fan of Ferry's Roxy work will find Frantic music to their ears. It strips the echo that fogged past albums, picks up the pace, and has him singing with the animation of old. He combines swooning originals with covers he might have chosen in the 70's, including a bone-dry take on Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's All Alright." Ultimately, he's not frantic, just alive. It's a shame that there are no videos accompanying these songs, even simple ones; not only do they help promote the singles when they're aired on television, they provide an extra reason (for normal, well balanced people :-) to buy the singles. Many CD singles these days, perhaps most, seem to include QuickTime-format movies that can play on a home computer. I'm glad to hear that One Way Love has been released in Germany. I'm sure it would pay, though, to release a commercial non-album track (or two) and accompanying video and to mention the album on its cover. A return to the EP form of 1976 and 1985, maybe. There are a few boots knocking around (and I've even compiled a similar thing myself) that collects together the various 1960s tracks that were performed live during 1999/2000 - Can't Help Thinking About Me, London Boys, I Dig Everything, plus his cover of Pictures Of Lily (recorded during the Toy sessions), Afraid (a 'live-in-the-studio' version was available to view on demand on BowieNet), Nature Boy from Moulin Rouge, Silly Boy Blue from the Tibet benefit show last year, America from the NYC benefit and a few other stray tracks. > > Bowie did promise that Toy would see the light of day somehow, and sure enough, at least two tracks on his new album are from that project (Slip Away, formerly known as Uncle Floyd and Afraid). And the bonus tracks on his forthcoming single include two Heathen outtakes, plus re-recordings of You've Got A Habit Of Leaving Me and Baby Loves That Way (the first Lower Third single from 1965) and a new recording of the oft bootlegged Hunky Dory/Ziggy leftover Shadow Man. A new version of Conversation Piece is also listed as a bonus track on the Japanese edition of Heathen. > > And whilst I'm on the subject, I received a copy of Heathen at the weekend. It sounds like it's from a badly recorded third generation cassette, but my goodness, this is a truly exceptional album. Some of Bowie's best songs in years and without doubt far superior to Frantic (and I'll argue that for as long as you like). It's like Hunky Dory meets Low/Heroes/Scary Monsters. Dave obviously learnt a valuable lesson with Hours... by writing the songs before getting in the studio, as they are very much "songs" and not the directionless ramblings of Outside and Earthling (not that they were crap, this is just better). Something special must happen when Dave gets together with Tony Visconti, so let's hope they do a few more whilst they're talking! > > BTW, there are three covers on the album - Cactus (the Pixies), I've Been Waiting For You (Neil Young) and Gemini Spacecraft (the Legendary Stardust Cowboy). > > Thank you for your time. > > ;-) > > SimonG > > > ___________________________________________________________________________ > The subliminable footer says: > To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: > unsubscribe avalon ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 May 2002 23:27:49 -0700 From: "Keith Shockley" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Re: virus protection hint - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Saturday, May 25, 2002 5:17 AM Subject: [AVALON] Re: virus protection hint Eileen, How did you like Insomnia? Did anyone on the list see the director Christopher Nolan's last film Memento? It was my favorite film of last year, just ahead of David Lynch's Mulholland Drive. I've seen and liked Memento, Mulholland Drive has not opened in theaters in Sweden yet, neither has Gosford Park nor Will Smith as Ali. I've seen the first part of Training Day on video and I understand why Denzel Washington got an Oscar, although I like Remember the Titans better so far. Another favorite from last year is Crazy Beautiful were Kirsten Dunst proves that she can act.
