Because as good as it is--and it's his best offering since his covers effort, "Taxi" (1993)--fans can't help being disappointed by the absence of Roxy cohorts Phil Manzanera and Andy Mackay. On the bright side, we do get Roxy drummer Paul Thompson and Ferry's competitive compatriot, Brian Eno (who co-wrote, plays keyboards on and adds backing vocals to the closing track, "I Thought"). Fiery guitarists Chris Spedding and Johnny Greenwood of Radiohead also contribute. As is often the case, Ferry is at his best as an interpreter; the disc starts strong with a cover of Bob Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue." Later on, Ferry gives us a touching and typically unique reading of Leadbelly's "Goodnight Irene." Eschewing the low-key lounge ambience of "Mamouna" (1994), the original material leans toward a more bluesy vibe, and Ferry's ever-sophisticated crooning shines in this earthy context. Proper 'review' later, but this particular Odense internet cafe is about to close, so here's a quick few thoughts... What a bizarre venue. Real 'small band picnic in the park' stuff, maybe 1500 people at most, but a great atmosphere. Esconced at the front (of course). Ferry did the 'quick walk' on, instead of the usual languid stroll, to enable him to get to the Mic in time for Baby Blue. Powerful start, Speddo and Green linking well. Sign Of The Times was a nice surprise, it's been a while since I'd heard that live. I did want to hear This Is tomorrow and Tokyo Joe, but it was not to be. Spied a 'gong' behing Julia, so thought that T Joe would be in - damn it wasn't ! Both Ends Burning, was, frankly, blistering. The Band as a whole are much rawer, more basic than I expected, and when the likes of Oh Yeah comes in, it's almost as if they're thinking 'hang on, it's too quiet' !! Speddo and Mick Green are so powerful - there's no stopping them once they kick in. More unfamiliar stuff would have been nice, maybe later in the tour (?). Very pleased Out Of the Blue was still in there. Tara didn't quite work, which was a real pity, as it was such a major highlight from the Roxy tour. My my, did it rain, about 20 mins in. I believe the word is 'torrential'. Drenched ! Hard Rain, indeed. And that song was almost a carbon copy of how it was done on the ATGB Tour (short version). Thommo managed to knock most of his drums over at the end of Kiss And Tell, much to the amusement of the rest of the Band. Same song too, when the bottom of Ferry's Mic fell off ! It was ok, we sang the words for him, until he managed to put it back together - himself - no help from roadies this time ! He just laughed... It was a warm up gig really, for tomorrow at Jelling - both John O'Brien and I will be there once again (hopefully drier). No matter, we had a great time. A quick hi to Avalonians Stefan, Markus Meyer, and Miriam from Hamburg, who we met at the gig. And aren't the Band and crew great ? As we'd travelled such a long way, (and got drenched !) we were invited to travel back into the centre of Odense on the Tourbus, which was a great surprise. So, after-gig chat for a good while with the Dancers, Katie and Anna (who had such a great time that they were barely able to stop themselves doing the Roxy '60s dance' during Both Ends Burning), Lucy, Julia, Colin, Jim, Sarah, Mick and Speddo. Many thanks to all for that, as it was such a luxury to dry off in the warm Bus for the journey back into town. Eternal thanks. We're off to eat now, late dinner - famished ! Report on Jelling Festival to follow late Saturday or early Sunday... and no doubt, a fuller review to follow, once I get back home on Sunday night. Reecey... LAUNCH - Your Yahoo!
