I like the groove he settles into on it. I agree with you in theory though. Wouldn't want to see much more in that vein. What's next, Grateful Dead, my all time least favorite band? (shudder) ~As for Goodnight Irene, I long ago accepted that there are certain things Bryan wants to pay homage to and point out and I enjoy it for what it tells us about him and for bringing the character of such songs to light. Unlike most of you, I find Baby Blue to be the one song I sometimes skip over on Frantic, but I'm very glad everyone else finds it so enjoyable. I don't skip over Don't Think Twice, although I wouldn't miss it if it were gone, and I do like the lyrics to it and think they fit with Ferry's persona, certainly. ~ I've noticed a lot of talk about Amazing Grace lately, and must say I so detest that song that I would never consider listening to it voluntarily. It's played here at every funeral, it seems, and drones on forever. But people with wonderful voices seem unable to resist covering it. Even Bryan can't make it palatable to me, though, I'm afraid. Back to my insomnia, Paula >The 'numpty' on Frantic for me is Goin' Down. Bryan always had the knack of making people like Mark Knopfler, David Sanborn, Marcus Miller etc sound as if they were playing on a Bryan Ferry record. Goin' Down sounds as if Bryan is singing on a Dire Straits record. If there is one band I would hate Bryan (or any other band for that matter) to sound like and that is Dire Straits. It hasn't grown on me, I think its only filler for this album and doesn't belong. It would have fit nicely on ATGB which also took a few listens since its not what I expected from Mr. Ferry at the time. I thoroughly enjoy the rest of the songs (except going down) and suspect that they will carry the entire work into some kind of formal recognition. I've been a fan since the seventies, and since (in my opinion) I considered that era to be the best output from the boys, that is why I went to last years concerts. More to say, but gotta go to try to get Rolling Stones tix. NP..... Great performance again from Bryan - particularly "Don't Think Twice", which I thought he sang with real feeling and poignancy. "Irene" is slowly growing on me, and I preferred last night's live version to the CD track, but I still find it jars on me when I hear it on the album. It did strike me as a pity that, when the publicity for Later referred to Bryan's "first album for 8 years to contain new songs", he performed two covers - however good, I'm not convinced this would have "sold" the album to anyone yet to hear it. Very glad to hear that; I was wondering whether it might do anything to job people into buying a copy of Frantic today to help tomorrow's chart position. >Disappointed he didn't go for performing at least one of his own songs. Me, too. Agreed about Don't Think Twice: the quieter his voice becomes, the more intense the performance, somehow. i noticed that on the Roxy DVD, the arrangement tended to avoid guitar parts that clashed with the vocal; last night, given so much space, his vocal - reduced almost to a whisper - was just great. Quiet, intense. Irene lacked something, perhaps but I didn't think it all that bad and loved the harmonica part at the end. I was amazed by how well Ferry was received by the studio audience; I don't know whether most of them knew which bands would be on when they were invited but when Ferry was introduced at the beginning, thanked at the end and finished each performance, he got such a loud cheer. Nice to hear. Regretting having not taped it. Brilliant DVD!! ( To answer the question of David Gilmour : for 34,99 Euro.) You can see that the band have so much fun. I'm not going to tell more. And I've got a alibi for that evening ! You can see the Dutch at : Ed stobbelaar at 128 minutes Myself Esther at 102.25 + 105.17 (white blouse) Ed & Renate at 109.08 (right side of the microphone in the green spotlights) Methap at 127 + 128 (the girl of Ron Remake, dark hair) And I've recognised several times a couple of the english. !! I'm not going to tell who, becauses maby not all of them have seen the DVD yet. Can anyone tell me who the young man is in close-up at 125.46 minutes, Is that maybe Isaac Ferry ? ps if you put it in slowmotion for example 52.48 you can see Lucy dancing very erotic and at 128 minutes : Ed is making an "ALLAH" thing with his hands. I've you got the DVD and your on it, can you tell me with minutes your on ?? (curious Type) I'm not much of a writing to the list. I don't feel comfortable knowing that so many people can read it.
