Page 84. The May issue of Q Magazine (where Bryan is featured on Cash for Questions)is out. Some new info on Bryan comes forth..... on Roxy Tour 2001 he spent more time with Andy than anyone else. It's a four-page article with nice color photos. Bryan Ferry, too, has had his moments in the doldrums, but his latest shows there's life in the (57-year) old geezer yet. Frantic (Virgin) is mix of original material and covers. And, while it might not reach the giddy heights of his Roxy Music days, there's plenty here to warm the heart. For a start, Brian Eno is working with Ferry again. That's something many Roxy fans thought would never happen and their effort, 'I Thought', takes time to reveal its subtle charms. Anybody expecting something avant garde from the King of Avant Garde will be disappointed, though. Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood lends his guitar to 'Hiroshima', a soaring number inspired by the classic 1959 film Hiroshima Mon Amour. Elsewhere, Eurythmics' Dave Stewart shares song-writing credits with Ferry, most notably on the ode to Marilyn Monroe, 'Goddess Of Love'. This first single should make people sit up and take notice of Ferry again. His trademark velvetly vocals are all over this. And it's good to see the guy singing so obsessively about women again. "I can't go on without you oh I want you/ Nobody cares like I do what can I do?" Anybody else would sound faintly ridiculous but this suave old devil manages to pull it off with aplomb. Whatever about Ferry and Eno working together again, it's just as arresting to see him covering Bob Dylan. His rendition of 'It's All Over Now, Baby Blue' is impressive, but 'Don't Think Twice, It's All Right' is a hammy effort, with Ferry sounding like a bad Elvis impersonator. Leadbelly's classic 'Goodnight Irene' seems too strained. Ferry, as always, is at his best when cool and detached. Frantic is not without its faults then but the album as a whole marks a resounding return to form. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 5 May 2002 15:10:30 -0700 (PDT) From: David Firmin Subject: [AVALON] Wouldn't you have preferred this cover?
