I actually think he used playback on let's stick together :-( Having watched the video today I'd say that all of it, he also did 'Baby Blue' and 'Goddess Of Love', was playback, or at least singback. But I might be wrong, not being adept at telling them apart. Ferry looked at ease and the host obviously liked having Bryan as a guest, no interview though. The reason for latter being that it's live and do not reach an audience profilic in English. It was 1973/4 all over again. And "Cruel" ought to have been a single. I'd love to hear that on a pub jukebox. Its the camp chant/chorus that I find so winning . Ferry really has taken a long look at his career for this record. There are so many Roxy and earlier Ferry solo references, stylistically, musically and lyrically. He returns to phrases that he's used before - tiger skin, tortured sighs, and so on. I'm sure the positions will change, they usually do: 1. San Simeon - it's so sensual, evocative - Ferry at his most alluring. This was my choice on simply reading the lyrics, hearing it just confirmed my original opinion. I have to say, 'Dreamhome' is one of my 'all times' too. 2. Nobody Loves Me - the vocal could belong to nobody else, the plaintive voice, the obvious sadness. The lyrics hit you straight between the eyes and haven't we all been there, sometime? 3. Fool for Love - I love it for it's romanticism, simplicity and truthfulness. 4. Goddess of Love - didn't particularly like this one on first hearing, but here it is high on my list already. The guitar is fabulous. Again the sympathy with unrequited love. Bryan sings 'nobody cares like I do' to Marilyn, but can't most of us females relate to these words with a certain man in mind even though we're 'only a face in the crowd'. 5. It's All Over Now Baby Blue - hooked from TOTP2. Bryan's vocals and HIS harmonica prove that he now owns the song - any other version now would be a poor 2nd best. And...I've always been a Dylan fan. 6. I Thought - bit worried when I first heard this - more my dad's idea of a 'good toon' than mine. Didn't take long though - beautiful lyrics anyway. This the one I wake up humming, and it's creeping up the list. 7. Cruel - first impression on reading the lyrics was that this song was unusual for our hero, but once I'd heard the whole thing, the guitar swayed me and if it wasn't for no's 1-6 it would be much higher on this list. 8. One Way Love - not my cup of tea at all, far too commercial etc etc. But..... the 'oooh' before the chorus 'no more teardrops.... (you all know exactly what I mean!) changes it for me from an 'out and out' pop tune into a ' be quiet everyone I need to listen to this bit'. Must add that some of my friends who are not particularly Ferry fans profess to this being the best on the album, so maybe a likely single..... 9. Goin' Down - love the voice, but doesn't mean a lot. 10. Hiroshima - definitely growing on me, but I think I shy away from the historical images. Probably be no. 1 given a few weeks. 11. Don't Think Twice - can't make up my mind. It was almost no. 3, but I generally prefer the original Ferry to covers, love the vocal - mmmm must listen again. 12. Goodnight Irene - I'm sure we'll all be singing this one along with him so that can't be bad. At least when I'm at family 'do's' and the oldies get together singing I'll now know the words and be able to join in....knowing, of course, that, 'somebody does it better'! 13. Ja Nun Hons Pris - ??? Love the fact that Fool for Love follows on. Never a Lionheart fan, more interested in his wicked brother, King John. Thanks for the opportunity of using up some time on this, my most miserable of weekends. My poor dog is no longer around, and I needed a distraction. Hiroshima and I Thought (in that order) are the standouts for me, too. Hiroshima is another great Ferry song about sensation: its poetic lyric blends many aspects of that theme and artfully hides the less family-friendly of them behind a carefully positioned screen. Bryan's vague interview references to Blade Runner and the like - that all fits, too. Great work, at its best when played at speaker-threatening volumes. I can't tell whether it's Greenwood or Trower whose guitar screams louder or swoops faster but this is Ferry doing what I think he's best at. It took me a long time to get to like but this is now my favourite of recent Ferry songs. Just a quick delurk to say to the handful of UK Avalonians who haven't copped a freebie Frantic that I had my hands on a copy in my local Asda today - but they wouldn't let me buy it till tomorrow. Anyway the good bit was it is only #9.97 and is probably easier to get to than your local HMV/Virgin - and a good bit cheaper too! What's the story with the sale of Scottish gig tickets? June the 1st for Glasgow and EFT in Edinburgh saying that there is no confirmed booking. When I made these enquiries last saturday I couldn't work this out. Then in last sunday's local tabloid rag I spotted an advert for the Princes St gardens gig. Not sold out yet? Large clank of dropping penny and all becomes clear. JO'B/Chris, I hope that the info that Mr Lawn is releasing through your excellent channels will include a couple of days notice of impending on-sale dates for these gigs. Since Goodnight Irene seems to be the track polarising opinions most, I have to say that this and Fool for love are my favourites based on the 90s snatches and Baby Blue my least favourite on the same basis. I do like the other Dylan one though. Look forward to seeing the usual faces (and perhaps a few new ones) on the tour gatherings. Best regards.
