Maybe someone can get an advance copy out to Robert Hilburn of the LA Times. His Roxy Music reunion tour review was so positive, that a timely good review by him in the upcoming weeks is not out of the question. I'm sure Bryan's people must still have some contacts out here. I'm glad to hear that not everyone dislikes Goodnight Irene. Any song that makes you want to sing along to can't be all bad. In some ways I wish I hadn't heard the Alphaville tracks first as i'm constantly comparing. How do you turn a 5:56 song into a 4:34 and not rush it IE: San Simeon? You don't You can't. Sorry I, like the Alphaville version better.. Goin down is essentially I put a spell (checker) on you meets the blues. I like it. This is longer than usual for me and really I'm running out of time. (Will there be strings on this tour?) And will we see a Day for Night that unveiled the sharp eastern sounds masked by the heaviness of the original mix? The string instrument that follows Bryan's vocal, the tabla-like percussion. All cheerfully Pat Leonardised in the original, they'd come alive if played for real. (I realise that now would not be the best time for a middle-Eastern arrangement.) Good choices. Ain't it Funny (How Time Slips Away) might be a good opener - a more reflective, less playful performance than the one we hear on the album, perhaps. A song whose opening - "Well, hello there/ My, it's been a long, long time" - is perfect for a returning audience that may have opted out of the show of 1930s covers. Part of Bryan's voice has slipped away but it's funny, he's using that singing style again; and if it doesn't quite seem like 'just the other day', well, perhaps that's the real point of the song.
