Hitting CTRL + W will also close most pop-ups/pop-unders quicker than a mouse click especially in those cases where several clicks are required to close them out, then send a nasty e-mail to that company stating that you won`t use their service until the do away with that crap. The first time I heard it I heard it literally in snippets and I was very much struck by what I heard. I had heard _Alphaville_ (although at the time I first heard _Frantic_ I had not heard _Alphaville_ for a long time), and I could tell some work had been done to the surviving tracks. And while I thought I really liked the tracks on _Alphaville_, I was surprised to find that I liked their reworkings on _Frantic_ much better. [I must confess that I am very tempted to write a review of _Frantic_ which compares the crossover songs to their original versions, but that's really not fair (although I will eventually write a comparison of the two albums).] In fact, this if the first Ferry solo album since _Boys and Girls_ that I can say that I thoroughly enjoy. The snippets I heard were good, and when I finally heard the whole album I was not disappointed. However the weird thing is that I don't think (1) that every song on the album is great or (2) that the entire album hangs together as an organic whole. However, as the glowing reviews posted to the list attest, there is *something* about this album which grabs your attention and which is very appealing. For example, I'm pretty lukewarm about "San Simeon." I thought it was a poor attempt to imitate "In Every Dreamhome," and learning that it was composed from its abandoned lyrics hasn't entirely shaken that feeling on my part. However, I do like its dissonant string (especially Spedding's electric sitar) and piano accents, so sometimes I resist skipping it. ("Hiroshima," however, is another story altogether. It's dull, dull, dull. I can't believe "Alphaville" and "Love War" were passed up in favor of it. Or the incredible "I Don't Want To." Oh well, maybe they'll turn up on the rumored next and imminent [for Ferry] studio album.) I'm slowly warming to "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" as the title track. It's tight and bouncy and poppy. I like the guitar muscling its way in, and the tinkling of the piano that can be heard over the rest of the band every now and then, given it an ever so slight honky tonk feeling. I don't love this song, but what I love about it is that it has a shape, and a structure, and a sound. I like the reworked "Cruel" with its faux American Indian rhythm and despite the embarrassing lyrics of its first verse: My sun is set - and my day is done When I turn to the east I can see no dawn But iron horse come - buffalo gone Like blades of grass they cut us all down Yes I know what it is to be free To run as far as the eye can see But long knife come - buffalo gone Like blades of grass they cut us all down Why in the world are you so cruel? Apart from that, "Cruel" is vintage Ferry (I'm blaming those lyrics on Dave Stewart). "Going Down" is fine--a solid cover and oddly placed at the first part of the album. Despite the fact that I had a private email comparing "Goddess Of Love" unfavorably to "Hungry Like The Wolf," I like it. It's pop music as only Mr. Ferry can do. Before the complaining starts, you have to admit that Lord knows there's enough doom and gloom on _Frantic_ and in his back catalog, and not only can't he be expected to write another "The Only Face," he shouldn't have to. Besides it's a poppy song about unrequited love and that's always a good combination. (plus it's about Marilyn Monroe, of my favorite actresses) While I tip my hat to Colin Good's keyboard technique, I find his work very glib and superficial, and as much as I love "Don't Think Twice It's Alright" (and I took this song all the way into my heart the very first time I heard it) and as much as I admire his rippling, player-piano like accompaniment, I am left wondering how powerful this song would have been if Mr. Ferry had played the piano himself and injected some emotion into the keyboard track. (I can't help it. I think music (and life) should be played from the heart, not the mind.) However, it's a stunning song as it is, from Bryan's harmonica playing to the incredible intimate and up front vocals, where you can hear him take his breaths and hear him singing so close to your ears when you listen via the headphones. I'm not talking about the breathy half singing that I found so annoying on _As Time Goes By_; I'm talking about singing that is seductive, confident, and insistent. It's incredibly vulnerable and it's really, in its quiet and possibly overlooked way, the album's highlight. In this incarnation "Nobody Loves Me" is a curious mix of a disco song and a march. I think this version is much more tightened up and finished, but at the same time I miss the soaring anthem like sound of it earlier version. It's very odd, but that's probably what keeps me listening to it. I think the revamped "Fool For Love" is a masterpiece, flowing naturally out of "Ja Hun Hons Pris" (it works!) and then slowly becoming more modern and bringing us right up to the 21st century. And I love Chris Spedding's guitar on this--it's emotional and lilting, and quite well done. "Goodnight Irene" is livened up with its Cajun setting. I neither like or dislike it (although it is in parts frighteningly like how many family sings it when you beg for mercy as the card game creeps into the early morning hours). I know I'm supposed to like "Hiroshima" because its hipster quotient is intensified with the presence of Johnny Greenwood on guitar (and don't get me wrong--although I'm not always sure what they're trying to prove, I love Radiohead and one of the best evenings of my life was spent being literally shoe-horned into the 9:30 Club here in DC during their very short tour to promote _OK Computer_). But in the the end it, and its cousin "San Simeon," are throwbacks to Mr. Ferry's own aimless sonic wandering, and they're less interesting for that. (I would have much preferred the more ambitious, and more concrete, "I Don't Want To" instead.) I know I'm in the minority, but "One Way Love" is a piece of genius. And I'm willing to wait until you all come around to my point of view about this. With "I Thought" Mr. Ferry has come up with a classic closer and one of the best songs on the album. From the cheesy sample at the beginning to the natural, easy flow of the song, the word play, and Eno's crooning, it's a winner all around. One hopes there are more like that one in the vaults. See, this is the thing I'm trying to explain: taken one-by-one, I can find fault with the songs. But taken as a whole, when I'm not listening to a song in order to figure out what I think about it, I go quite easily from one song to the next on the album, and I quite like it. (Even "Hiroshima." Well, sorta.) I already liked the cut "Bete Noire." The classic lyric "Say you'll be mine" hooked me, but now it's taken a new dimension because of "Ja Nun Hons Pris," which, yes, I realize he did not write. Like it supplied a missing piece to a puzzle. I'd pretty much not paid any attention to "Tara," and now I find myself liking it a lot as well, after hearing it on the Berlin 2001, and it's for the same reasons. This is exactly why I believe Ferry is the greatest artist ever. His work has so much depth that it is possible, even for a thoroughly immersed fan such as myself, to continue to find new dimensions in his music even years later. Even more boggling that he chose this song from centuries earlier rather than wrote it, and yet it seems to be some sort of cornerstone to his psyche. A USA tour is still under consideration and has neither been confirmed or ruled out and a definitive answer to that question will be made public through time. They played Hiroshima and one reviewer described it as a dirge - general view seemed to be that Ferry needs Roxy and that the solo stuff has never been up to much. I actually thought the track sounded pretty good - the first time I've heard it in full. It was strangely thrilling just to hear a new Ferry track blasting out of my radio! On the other hand, today's Daily Mail carries yet another very positive review (4 stars again) - quite prominent in their review pages with small pic - and that will reach a far bigger audience than BBC 6 Music (the fact that I listened to it yesterday probably doubled the size of their audience!!). It's very neat and tidy and up-to-date! Great! The video and audio clips are a great touch. Love the photos - you can never have too many of these, and the way they appear in a new little window to view a larger version. A good job guys! Just one question and it's probably too early to ask this, but will there be a forum or chat facility in the future.
